Cambridge Companion Shakespeare on Film
This page intentionally left blank Film adaptations of Shakespeare’s plays are increasingly popular and now figure prominently in the study of his work and its reception. This lively Companion is a collection of critical and historical essays on the films adapted from, and inspired by, Shakespeare’s plays. An international team of leading scholars discuss Shakespearean films from a variety of perspectives:as works of art in their own right; as products of the international movie industry; in terms of cinematic and theatrical genres; and as the work of particular directors from Laurence Olivier and Orson Welles to Franco Zeffirelli and Kenneth Branagh. They also consider specific issues such as the portrayal of Shakespeare’s women and the supernatural. The emphasis is on feature films for cinema, rather than television, with strong cov- erage of Hamlet, Richard III, Macbeth, King Lear and Romeo and Juliet. A guide to further reading and a useful filmography are also provided. Russell Jackson is Reader in Shakespeare Studies and Deputy Director of the Shakespeare Institute, University of Birmingham. He has worked as a textual adviser on several feature films including Shakespeare in Love and Kenneth Branagh’s Henry V, Much Ado About Nothing, Hamlet and Love’s Labour’s Lost. He is co-editor of Shakespeare: An Illustrated Stage History (1996) and two volumes in the Players of Shakespeare series. He has also edited Oscar Wilde’s plays. -

I also owe a large debt to the Newberry Library, the State Library of Ohio and the university libraries of Yale, Miami of Ohio, Ohio Wesleyan, Chicago, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa and Wisconsin for their generosity in lending books. Their willingness to entrust precious eighteenth-century volumes to the postal service greatly facilitated my research. My largest debt, however, is to my adviser, Professor Richard D. Sharing with Creative Commons
64 • PLATFORM: Journal of Media and Communication SHARING WITH CREATIVE COMMON S : A BU S INE ss MODEL FOR CONTENT CREATOR S CHERYL FOONG QUEEN S LAND UNIVER S ITY OF TE C HNOLOGY , AU S TRALIA Abstract: Creative Commons (CC) is often seen as a social movement, dismissed by critics as a tool for hobbyists or academics who do not sell their creations to make a living. However, this paper argues that the licensing of creative copyright works under a CC licence does not preclude commercial gain. If used wisely, CC licences can be a useful tool for creators in their quest for commercial success. In particular, this paper argues that the sharing of creative works online under a CC licence allows creators to circumvent traditional distribution channels dominated by content intermediaries, whilest maintaining a level of control over their copyright works (i.e. explicitly reserving some rights but not all rights). This will be illustrated by case studies on how CC is being used by content creators and intermediaries respective INTRODU C TION Creative Commons (CC) is often seen as a social movement, dismissed by critics as a tool for hobbyists or academics who do not sell their creations to make a living.1 The application of CC licences by copyright owners to their works permits the public at large to share the work with others, subject to certain conditions. There is concern that CC promotes a “gift culture” which devalues creative works both in society at large and in the minds of creators themselves.2 These concerns stem from doubts as to one’s ability to make money off a work that can legally be shared on the internet or anywhere else.3 These arguments may be valid in certain circumstances, but do not apply absolutely across the board. -
A Quantitative Analysis of the Perceived Quality for Popular Movies by Consumers, Experts and Peers
A quantitative analysis of the perceived quality for popular movies by consumers, experts and peers Student name: Ruth Bos Student number: 409141 Supervisor: Dr. P. Bhansing Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication Erasmus University Rotterdam Cultural Economics and Entrepreneurship Master Thesis June 8, 2016 Master Thesis “Quality time at the movies” Ruth Bos - 409141 ABSTRACT Academic research pertained to the marketing of motion pictures has identified the importance of quality on the commercial success of popular movies with indicators as consumer evaluations, expert ratings and peer-recognized awards as the Academy Awards. However, most researchers fail to analyze the quality of a movie as a measurement of performance of a movie. The current study extents previous research by aiming to measure the perceived quality of consumers, experts and peers for popular movies, based on the assumptions made on the success factors for commercial performance in previous marketing literature. Through a quantitative internet content analysis, data was gathered on the motion picture industry. The models were tested with a sample of 320 movies released between 2000-2015. Results show that the perceived quality of consumers overlap with the perceived quality of experts, which contradicts statements about the ‘little taste’ of consumers. Moreover, the data shows that there is a difference between the perceived quality of consumers and the commercial success of a movie, measured in box office revenue. However, for both commercial success and the perceived quality of consumers, popular appeal is still important for the satisfaction of the consumer. Managerial and theoretical implications, as well as limitations and directions for future research are offered. -
