THE 22ND ANNUAL WASHINGTON, DC INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL APRIL 24 – MAY 4, 2008 THE WASHINGTON, DC INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL A world of films…a window into our world. Whether experienced in movie theaters, on DVDs or television in our homes, on our iPods or computers, films are the major communications media of our time. Hollywood films dominate commercial cinema. However, scores of talented filmmakers around the globe produce thou- sands of quality films that speak with a different voice, provide a different point of view, and tell different stories. Presenting these films in the nation’s capital is the purpose of Filmfest DC. Photo: Chad Evans Wyatt Film festivals are a journey of Tony Gittens, Festival Director and Shirin Ghareeb, Assistant Director discovery, a visual and thought provoking adventure into how people see and interpret our world. Every Filmfest DC is different and every film is unique from every other film in the festival. Together, they comprise an amazing representation of human imagination, commitment and talent. The festival has two special focuses this year — Politics & Film and New Latin Ameri- can Cinema. Obviously, politics are especially prominent during this election season and we wanted to explore the role affairs of state play in people’s every day lives. Latin American filmmakers are always a treasure trove of inventive storytelling. The di- verse selection of new work we have gathered from the Spanish-speaking world (in- cluding Spain) are moving, humorous, and insightful. None of this would be possible without the many dedicated people who have shared their time and talents with Filmfest DC.

  • Dangerously Free: Outlaws and Nation-Making in Literature of the Indian Territory
DANGEROUSLY FREE: OUTLAWS AND NATION-MAKING IN LITERATURE OF THE INDIAN TERRITORY by Jenna Hunnef A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of English University of Toronto © Copyright by Jenna Hunnef 2016 Dangerously Free: Outlaws and Nation-Making in Literature of the Indian Territory Jenna Hunnef Doctor of Philosophy Department of English University of Toronto 2016 Abstract In this dissertation, I examine how literary representations of outlaws and outlawry have contributed to the shaping of national identity in the United States. I analyze a series of texts set in the former Indian Territory (now part of the state of Oklahoma) for traces of what I call “outlaw rhetorics,” that is, the political expression in literature of marginalized realities and competing visions of nationhood. Outlaw rhetorics elicit new ways to think the nation differently—to imagine the nation otherwise; as such, I demonstrate that outlaw narratives are as capable of challenging the nation’s claims to territorial or imaginative title as they are of asserting them. Borrowing from Abenaki scholar Lisa Brooks’s definition of “nation” as “the multifaceted, lived experience of families who gather in particular places,” this dissertation draws an analogous relationship between outlaws and domestic spaces wherein they are both considered simultaneously exempt from and constitutive of civic life. In the same way that the outlaw’s alternately celebrated and marginal status endows him or her with the power to support and eschew the stories a nation tells about itself, so the liminality and centrality of domestic life have proven effective as a means of consolidating and dissenting from the status quo of the nation-state.

University of Lapland, Faculty of Art and Design Title of the pro gradu thesis: Translating K-Horror to the West: The Difference in Film Poster Design For South Koreans and an International Audience Author: Meri Aisala Degree program: Graphic Design Type of the work: Pro Gradu master’s thesis Number of pages: 65 Year of publication: 2018 Cover art & layout: Meri Aisala Summary For my pro gradu master’s degree, I conducted research on the topic of South Korean horror film posters. The central question of my research is: “How do the visual features of South Korean horror film posters change when they are reconstructed for an international audience?” I compare examples of original Korean horror movie posters to English language versions constructed for an international audience through a mostly American lens. My study method is semiotics and close reading. Korean horror posters have their own, unique style that emphasizes emotion and interpersonal relationships. International versions of the posters are geared toward an audience from a different visual culture and the poster designs get translated accordingly, but they still maintain aspects of Korean visual style. Keywords: K-Horror, melodrama, genre, subgenre, semiotics, poster I give a permission the pro gradu thesis to be read in the Library. 2 목차Contents Summary 2 1. • The Loved Ones (2009)
Screen Sound n3, 2012 ALL MASHED UP? Songs, Music and Allusionism in The Loved Ones (2009) Philip Hayward Abstract This article considers Australian director Sean Byrne’s 2009 horror/comedy feature film The Loved Ones with particular regard to its uses of allusionism within a popular genre context.1 Within this focus, the article explores the various musical components of the soundtrack (including critical use of specific songs), the creative template determined by the director and the creative input and decision making of various members of the production team. In this manner, the article profiles the film’s audio-visual text, the perceptions and motivations of the production team and considers how these relate to the film’s reception and box-office performance. Keywords The Loved Ones, allusionism, film songs, soundtrack, Australian film Allusionism — An Introduction Back in 1982 the film theorist Noel Carroll considered and, it is not unfair to say, fretted over, the prevalence of allusionism in a range of popular films. Carroll’s critical persona and aesthetic approach drew on two strands: the auteur school of film criticism that attempted to identify distinguished creative authors working within the (supposedly largely undistinguished) mainstream film industry; and a parallel interest in and commitment to the modernism of the western cinematic avant-garde. His anxiety over allusionism in popular cinema arose from a position that considered that, while classic auteur cinema and (successful) modernist works could be identified to have allusionism skillfully woven into the fabric of their texts (and, more broadly, into their author’s aesthetic visions), a range of popular cultural texts seemed increasingly inclined to simply display their allusionism without any deep or thematically significant intent.
