Fictional Images of Real Places in Philadelphia
598 CONSTRUCTING IDENTITY Fictional Images of Real Places in Philadelphia A. GRAY READ University of Pennsylvania Fictional images ofreal places in novels and films shadow the city as a trickster, doubling its architecture in stories that make familiar places seem strange. In the opening sequence of Terry Gilliam's recent film, 12 Monkeys, the hero, Bruce Willis, rises fromunderground in the year 2027, toexplore the ruined city of Philadelphia, abandoned in late 1997, now occupied by large animals liberated from the zoo. The image is uncanny, particularly for those familiar with the city, encouraging a suspicion that perhaps Philadelphia is, after all, an occupied ruin. In an instant of recognition, the movie image becomes part of Philadelphia and the real City Hall becomes both more nostalgic and decrepit. Similarly, the real streets of New York become more threatening in the wake of a film like Martin Scorcese's Taxi driver and then more ironic and endearing in the flickering light ofWoody Allen's Manhattan. Physical experience in these cities is Fig. 1. Scottish Book Trust Authors Live: Anthony Horowitz Date: (In purple) Author/Interview subject: Anthony Horowitz Interviewed by: Janice Forsyth Other speakers: JF: Hello there, I am Janice Forsyth. A huge warm welcome to Authors Live. This is the world-class series of authors events that are beamed live into all sorts of venues all over the UK. We're talking about schools, homes, libraries, wherever you are, we're so delighted that you are joining us. And this is a particularly special day because we are about to welcome a fabulous author. But before I introduce him we also have some wonderful children from three South Lanarkshire primary schools. From Quarter Primary School, Leadhills and High Mill Primary School. They might even give you a wave, I don't know. But they're very nice anyway. Aren't they gorgeous? Yeah, they're waving too. Yeah, they're not too cool for school, and neither are you. It's so lovely to have you along. So as I said, every time we have an Authors Live it’s special, but this is particularly special because we're welcoming such a big name from the world of children's books. And it's a big year for him too because he's celebrating the 15th anniversary of the massively popular, I love them, Alex Rider, super spy books. Some of you will have read them I know and some of you also will have seen the film adaption of the very first one, Stormbreaker which I also loved. It's time I grew up! No it's not. -

Toward an Irreverent Ecocriticism
Journal of Ecocriticism 4(2) July 2012 Toward an Irreverent Ecocriticism Nicole Seymour (University of Arkansas at Little Rock)* Abstract I see an irreverent ecocriticism as being indebted to two major developments in and around the field: poststructuralist ecocriticism and queer ecology. Poststructuralist ecocriticism, as many readers no doubt know, can be traced to scholars such as William Cronon, Dana Phillips, and David Mazel. In his American Literary Environmentalism (2000), Mazel stresses that his work is not “about some myth of the environment, as if the environment were an ontologically stable, foundational identity we have a myth about. Rather, the environment is itself a myth, a ‘grand fable’ … a discursive construction, something whose ‘reality’ derives from the way we write, speak, and think about it” (xii). Similarly, the essays in Cronon’s 1996 collection Uncommon Ground taKe aim at simple, essentialist ideals of nature and wilderness; N. Katherine Hayles, for instance, argues that “the distinction between simulation and nature … is a crumbling diKe, springing leaks everywhere we press upon it” (411). Some of this worK may seem dated to those who engaged with poststructuralism much earlier. But, judging by the negative reactions of many ecocritics and environmentalists, it can also be viewed as quite the opposite: reactionary, overstated, heretical.1 Indeed, this worK could be described as perverse for how it breaks with its forebears, which include not just “classic” ecocriticism but also first-wave or conservationist environmentalism. My students often ask me if I think there’s hope for the future of the planet. I tell them I think it’s probably going to hell in a handbasket, and all of us with it.
