In each case one new institution has replaced the knowledge based institution that preceded it. Today the laboratory and the research university still stand as the most evolved and overlapping intermeshed institutions of knowledge. But since the central dynamic in the history of knowledge has been for a single institution to supersede its predecessor, the time is ripe for reinvention, for us the Communiversity. What is known as the rat-race in the West where everybody is out to fill their own pockets as their top priority is the very antithesis of social mobilisation where every pocket is filled, where people will work together for group gain that ultimately benefits individuals too.     Christian monastic communities living in harmony with the environment: an overview of positive trends and best practices 1 Abstract This paper explores the relationship between Christian monastic communities and nature and the natural environment, a new field for this journal. After reviewing their historical origins and evolution, and discussing their key doctrinal principles regarding the environment, the paper provides an overview of the best practices developed by these communities of various sizes that live in natural surroundings, and reviews promising new trends. These monastic communities are the oldest self-organised communities in the Old World with a continuous history of land and environmental management, and have generally had a positive impact on nature and landscape conservation. Their experience in adapting to and overcoming environmental and economic crises is highly relevant in modern-day society as a whole and for environmental managers and policy makers in particular. This paper also argues that the efforts made by a number of monastic communities, based on the principles of their spiritual traditions, to become more environmentally coherent should be encouraged and publicized to stimulate more monastic communities to follow their example and thus to recapture the environmental and spiritual coherence of their ancestors. It echoes the oft-repeated exhortation of Our Lord, “Whoever has ears to hear, let him hear.” Our model in this regard in the Gospel is Mary, who takes into her heart all the events of the birth and infancy of Jesus and keeps them there. She who listens is not a passive spectator. By her initial reception of the word brought by the angel Gabriel she conceives the Word in her heart and in her womb. Then, in her visitation to Elizabeth, she completes Old Testament prophecy with her song, the Magnificat, and at the same time anticipates the proclamation of the Gospel. In the Magnificat, she proclaims the pulling down from their thrones of the mighty, and the lifting up the lowly, the ending of the present order of the world and the beginning of a new world based on divine justice, that will be brought about by the Messiah. In St Luke’s account of the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple, which concludes his narrative of the birth, and traditionally marks a final liturgical farewell to Christmas in the Feast of the Presentation on 2nd February, Simeon takes up the Magnificat’s theme of the rise of the humble and the fall of the mighty, when he says to Mary, “This child is set for the rise and the fall of many in Israel”, and prophesies that the sword that will separate those who rise and those who fall will pass through the heart of Mary.
