London Aquaria Society Page 2 President’s Message

Going once, twice, sold…. What a great fish show and auction we just had. There were around 1100 lots for the auction and almost 200 entries for the show. Thanks to all who joined in on the fun. From the kitchen to the showroom and of course the auction, we had a wonderful response from one and all. If I were to name the people that worked so hard to make us proud I would have a message that is ten pages long. So from myself everybody gets a tail slap. Thanks again. Our meeting for October will be a special talk from Sandra Fazakas. She will speak about Fish Veterinary Medicine and showing some footage on the new Ripley’s Aquarium in Toronto. There was also other footage showing other large and we thought that you would be interested in this. The Jar Show this month will be Cyprinids (goldfish, danios sharks, goldfish and white clouds to name a few) as well as our open class, plant class and Family Fish Class at this meeting. As always, we will have the auction so please bring out those extra fish and plants. Who knows, you may pick up a bargain or two.

Another long week-end ahead of us, lets enjoy it. Ron Bishop President London Aquaria Society

Go Public, visited several pet stores in Edmonton. We were able to buy the uncertified Betta Therm heater at Big Al’s Aquarium Supercentres and Petland and found it for offer at petsmart.com and Amazon.ca. In an email, Petland spokeswoman Amy Pawson Blackwell said the company was pulling the BettaTherm from its shelves and that its sup- plier had suspended ordering and distributing the heater until it receives more information about its certification from the manufacturer. The BettaTherm is made in China by Zoo Med Laboratories of San Luis Obispo, Calif. In an email, Keith Morris, Zoo Med’s National Sales Manager, told CBC that since 95 per cent of its sales are in the U.S. it com- plies with U.S. law, which doesn’t require test- ing. Morris says the company voluntarily submits some products for testing, but that it is PET’S ‘N’ PONDS up to Canadian importers to make sure the 11A Frank Street, Strathroy, Ontario N7G 2R2 product conforms to Canadian law. A spokesman for Big Al’s, Derek Zabielski, said in an email the company has re- moved the product from its shelves, and was conducting a review of how the prod- uct came to be offered for sale. City warns consumers to look for CSA stamp

We showed both the aquarium heater and the temperature regulator to Edmonton’s chief elec- trical inspector. Brian Magega gave a thumbs-down to both devices, especially the Repti-Temp Rheostat. “It’s not legal, and I would consider it not safe,“ said Magega, who said he wouldn’t use the device in his own home, because its plug isn’t grounded or properly sealed. Magega says electrical devices that don’t have the CSA, or other approved stamp, haven’t been fire or shock-tested for the purpose they’re being sold.

London Aquaria Society Page 7 Uncertified equipment easy to find cont’d from page 7

The Alberta Electrical Code Regulation prohibits the manufacture, importation or sale of any electrical device, including aquarium equipment, that hasn’t been inspected or certified by an accred- ited testing agency. But responsibility for enforcing the Code falls to municipal electrical inspectors who spend most of their time inspecting wiring in buildings and who don’t do proactive store inspections. “It’s buyer beware,“ Magega said. “Unfortunately these types of products do get into the country, and we don’t know about it until we get a complaint.” “Of course they want to bring in a cheaper product, so that they can pass on the savings,” Magega said. “But in the long run there’s no savings here. And of course there’s added risk [from] using a device that doesn’t have the appropriate certification.” After CBC Go Public spoke with Magega, the City of Edmonton sent staff to inspect the shelves at sev- eral pet stores. At one store the BettaTherm heater and reptile thermostat had been removed, but the city found two uncertified air pumps for sale. The city says it sent a written warning to that store and reminders to the others about what markings should be on the products they sell. Federal laws also forbid the sale of unsafe products. The Canada Consumer Product Safety Act prohibits anything that could pose a risk to human health or safety from being sold, or made, or brought into Canada, and gives Health Canada the power to investigate complaints. But Matthew Edlund believes consumer protection laws aren’t effective if they’re not actively enforced. He says “Buyer beware” isn’t good enough and says products should be inspected before they’re put on store shelves. “There’s three levels of government that are supposed to be looking at this,” he said. “The manufacturers of this equipment have realized that no-one is looking, so they don’t have Wonderful Pets-Excellent to spend the extra expense to get the certifica- Products tion.” Superior How to protect yourself from unsafe electrical devices Aquariums

London Aquaria Society Page 8 THE SIZE HIERACHY FACTOR

By: Robert Speare, London Aquaria Society Submitted by: John Swick, London Aquaria Society, May 2013

Any Hobbyist who has bred fish, whether a livebearer or egglayer, will probably have noticed that some of his fry will grow much quicker than others. The larger fry will reach a mature or sale- able size long before the smaller fry do. These smaller fry are usually considered runts and as such these small fish usually end up being given away at an early age or fed off to the fishkeepers largest pet. Now of course the smallest of these small fish are definitely runts and should be destroyed as it is useless to waste valuable time, food and space on these creatures...but not all of these fish are useless.

The reason some of the fish stay smaller is due to the size hierarchy factor. There are many theories behind this factor, the most likely one dealing with a build up of toxic urine but the factor leads to the big fish getting bigger while the little fish appear to get smaller. But this need not remain so. The little fish have the same capabilities of growing into fine stock if they are raised properly. This involves setting up two tanks for a spawn. The spawn is put into the first tank and kept there until two or three weeks has gone by and they are all starting to show their differences in size. At this time two things should be done. First, the tiniest of the fry should be removed and destroyed. These will be the runs and will not be worth raising anyway. Next, the smaller fry are removed to the sec- ond tank so that when the job is completed, it resembles two groups of fish of different sizes. These two groups of fish are raised with all the food and care that you can possibly give your fish and in two weeks time a change will be noted. Some of the small “runts” will be the same size as their original giant brethren. It is time to wield the net again and rearrange the fish. All the large fish from the “runt” tank are re- turned to the original tank and any of the originals that have fallen behind are put into the “runt” tank to catch up to the rest of the spawn. This is continued until the spawn has reached saleable size. By using this system, it is hoped that instead of those few good young that would have been raised, the hobbyist will be able to produce larger, bigger and more uniform spawns.

Common Name: Green pufferfish

Scientific Name Of The Species Tetraodon nigroviridis

 Usual maximum size in fish tanks (min -max):10 - 17 cm ( 3.94" - 6.69")  Recommended pH of water for Green pufferfish:7.5 - 8.5  Water hardness (dGH) should be be- tween:12 - 18 °N  Recommended water temperature for Green pufferfish:23 - 28 °C ( 73.4 - 82.4 ° F )  Compatibility when kept in fish tanks (to it's own species):aggressive/territorial (visit this article) Compatibility (temperament to other fish species):peaceful (visit this article)  Preferred place when kept in fish tanks:Bottom levels  The way of breeding:Spawning  This species originates from:South Asia

Information about care: Food

The Green Pufferfish is highly car- nivorous and will feed on crustaceans, worms, and krill. If other fish are present in the aquarium, they might even eat the scales and fins off those tank mates. But this is not a rule. Sexing: There are no clear methods for sexing the Green Pufferfish.

Breeding: Captive breeding for the Green Pufferfish is likely to happen if there is both a male and female present. The problem is, the mortality rate for the fry is fairly high. The female will lay her clear eggs in a tight space on a hard surface. The male will protect the eggs by using his body to shield them from predators. After approximately one week the eggs will hatch and the fry can be fed foods such as newly hatched brine shrimp or microworms. When they get a little larger they should eat small snails. Lifespan: The lifespan of the Green Pufferfish is approximately 15 years under the right conditions.

Origin: Green Pufferfish can be found along costal areas of Asia along the east coast, down to the south coast. These fish are found in areas of both fresh and brackish waters.

Short Description: Young Green Pufferfish can be kept in fresh to slightly brackish water but the adults can be kept in brackish water aquariums. If the water levels are to be changed they need to be conditioned to different saline lev- els gradually. These fish need plenty of swimming space and hide outs because of their aggressive behavior. The Green Pufferfish will need to be fed hard foods such as snails. The shells are used to keep their teeth filed down. Their teeth can eventually grow too long where they can no longer eat.

Wakefield magistrates heard how Nigel Ball (52) had gone into the store on Westgate Retail Park on May 29 and taken the hexagonal Aqua One tank off the shelf, before walking out with it. Staff only discovered the £50 tank was missing later. However, Ball later returned to the store to buy a goldfish. When staff asked him what kind of aquarium he had at home, he pointed to the spot where the stolen tank had been and then identified one of a similar design. Staff became suspicious and asked him to fill out a form with his name and address. Police were called and he was arrested. The stolen tank was found at his home in Walnut Avenue, Peacock. Ball ad- mitted theft. Magistrates adjourned sentencing until next month.
