Page 26 Conclusion: Possible Conditions to Facilitate Success …………. Page 27 Addendum: Embracing New Technology ..………………………….. Page 28 Concept Introduction: Air passes have been used for over three decades by the airline and travel industries to facilitate travel within regions by offering a block of several one-way flights at a discount compared to buying the same flights separately. They are typically sold to tourists from outside the region planning a multi-stop itinerary. By selling a package of flights, often on several airlines, air passes can make travel within a region easier and more affordable, enabling tourists to visit more countries. While their overall track record is mixed, air passes have succeeded in the past at stimulating tourism in several regions, particularly regions that were suffering from high one-way air fares. In recent years one-way air fares have declined significantly in most regions, limiting the appeal of air passes.

  • Northeast Asian Economic Review Vol
The Northeast Asian Economic Review Vol. 4, No. 2, November 2016 21 Logistics and Transport Challenges in Mongolia Erdenechimeg Eldev-Ochir* Abstract In a globalized economy, efficient logistics and low transport costs are a significant determinant of a country’s competitiveness. Indeed, transport and logistics have a number of direct and indirect links with important economic and social development goals. Reducing the cost and improving the quality of logistics and transport systems creates an integrated and efficient transport network, which improves international market access and leads directly to increased trade. Increasing trade leads to better jobs, higher incomes and poverty reduction, specifically an increase in the per capita real income of a country. Indeed, transport and logistics have direct and indirect links with socioeconomic development. Keywords: logistics, transport, Mongolian economy, trade, rail, air, and water transportation JEL classification codes: R40, A10 1. Overview of the Mongolian Economy 1.1. Geography. Mongolia is the 18th largest country in the world with an area of 1.564 million km2. Mongolia is a landlocked country, located between the Russian Federation (RF) and the People’s Republic of China (PRC). Being landlocked presents more challenges, associated with increased import prices, reduced export revenues and increased logistic costs. The high logistics costs of Mongolia also derive from poor transport infrastructure, underdeveloped transport and logistics services, and slow and costly procedures for dealing with both exported and imported goods. 1.2. Population. The total population was 3.06 million as of 2015, which increased by 10.8% over five years from 2.76 million in 2010.
