Anatomical and molecular characteristics. Kassem F El-Sahhar, Rania MA Nassar, and Hend M Farag*. Department of Agricultural Botany, Faculty of Agriculture, Cairo University, Giza, Egypt. ABSTRACT This paper is the second part in a study concerning with various botanical characters of four plant species of genus Salvia L. namely; Salvia coccinea Buc'hoz ex Etl., Salvia farinacea Benth., Salvia officinalis L. and Salvia splendens Sellow ex Roem. &Schult. This work comprised a detailed botanical study of the anatomical structure of various plant organs and a classification of studied plant species based on botanical characters and protein electrophoresis through SDS- PAGE as a molecular approach. Anatomical study and analysis by light microscope included: apical and median portions of the main stem, leaf blade, petiole, flower bud and nutlet. Moreover, SEM was used to examine the ultrastructure of stomata, trichomes and nutlet surface. Molecular study using electrophoretic separation of seed storage proteins was carried out to identify and differentiate among the investigated species. The results obtained from SDS-PAGE analysis proved that both S.coccinea and S.farinacea are highly similar (83%) compared to other studied species. Followed that, the relationship between S.splendens and each of S.coccinea (71%) or S.farinacea (57%). The similarity between S.officinalis and any of the other three species was lesser. Keywords: Salvia, anatomical structure, SEM, molecular and SDS-PAGE. *Corresponding author July – August 2017 RJPBCS 8(4) Page No. 600 ISSN: 0975-8585 INTRODUCTION This is the second paper in a study dealing with various botanical attributes of four species of Salvia.

  • Mealycup Sage, Salvia Farinacea
A Horticulture Information article from the Wisconsin Master Gardener website, posted 1 Aug 2016 Mealycup sage, Salvia farinacea Mealycup sage, Salvia farinacea, is native to the plains, prairies, meadows and woodland edges of Mexico, central and western Texas and New Mexico in limestone soils from 3500-6000 feet. Also commonly called mealy blue sage, mealy sage, or blue sage, this short lived herbaceous perennial in the mint family (Lamiaceae) is hardy in zones 7-10. Because it is fast-growing and bears multiple spikes of blue fl owers in its fi rst year (fl owering in less than four months from seed), it is frequently grown as an annual where it will not survive the winter. (Despite living on the edge of zone 4, plants have occasionally survived a mild winter in my garden along a block wall with a southern exposure, but take a long time to get going the following year. Other anecdotal reports indicate it will survive further north than zone 7 in dry soil.) Both the scientifi c Mealycup sage is a perennial grown as an and common annual in the Midwest. names refer to the powdery white felted hairs on the fl ower calyx and upper stems; this extremely fi ne white pubescence is referred to as farinose (“mealy” means covered with powdery meal; farina is Latin for fl our or meal). • The Botanical, Chemical and Ethnobotanical Diversity of Southern African Lamiaceae
molecules Review The Botanical, Chemical and Ethnobotanical Diversity of Southern African Lamiaceae Ryan D. Rattray and Ben-Erik Van Wyk * Department of Botany and Plant Biotechnology, University of Johannesburg, Auckland Park, P.O. Box 524, Johannesburg 2006, South Africa; [email protected] * Correspondence: [email protected]; Tel.: +27-11-559-2412 Abstract: The Lamiaceae is undoubtedly an important plant family, having a rich history of use that spans the globe with many species being used in folk medicine and modern industries alike. Their ability to produce aromatic volatile oils has made them valuable sources of materials in the cosmetic, culinary, and pharmaceutical industries. A thorough account of the taxonomic diversity, chemistry and ethnobotany is lacking for southern African Lamiaceae, which feature some of the region’s most notable medicinal and edible plant species. We provide a comprehensive insight into the Lamiaceae flora of southern Africa, comprising 297 species in 42 genera, 105 of which are endemic to the subcontinent. We further explore the medicinal and traditional uses, where all genera with documented uses are covered for the region. A broad review of the chemistry of southern African Lamiaceae is presented, noting that only 101 species (34%) have been investigated chemically (either their volatile oils or phytochemical characterization of secondary metabolites), thus presenting many and varied opportunities for further studies. The main aim of our study was therefore to present an up-to-date account of the botany, chemistry and traditional uses of the family in southern Africa, and Citation: Rattray, R.D.; Van Wyk, to identify obvious knowledge gaps.

Introduction The genus Salvia has been especially popular since 1970s with those who garden for pleasure in Europe and North America. Salvia specimens have been chosen to grow because they have found them handsome and dependable plants that are, by and large, easy to grow (Clebsch, 2003). Salvias have been frequently planted in public and private gardens and refuges as ornamental in Turkey for the last decade.

  • Plant Availability List – January 7, 2016
Plant Availability List – January 7, 2016 I will be initiating major upgrades to the web site during winter of 2015. I Have about finished restocking plants from the spring sales. I will be adding utilities later to the nursery as well as making repairs. Propagation from cuttings usually takes 2 weeks to root. Colored dots indicate forecasted availability. Newly struck cuttings are marked by M. Newly potted cuttings are marked with a blue dot M and will be ready in 10 - 21 days, depending on variety and temperatures. Recently re-acquired and new stock plants are marked by a green dot M. Replacement stock plants I need to find a source of are marked by a magenta dot M. Those items without any dot are mostly plants that I have as established stock plants or am not currently offering. More replacements of lost stock plants will be coming. I restrict distribution of plants labeled PP and especially PPAF to comply with royalty agreements. This depends on the source of my propagation stock. I finally have bought a modest number of plugs of some of the more popular patented selections, like Amistad, Mystic Spires, and the Heatwave and Suncrest Dancer series. And of course, Wendy’s Wish and the new Ember’s Wish and Love and Wishes. This trial year to determine interest in these patented plants has worked out well, and pretty much as expected. Shell Dancer has shown to handle the winter of 2014 - 2015 in western Massachusetts well. What other surprises are there? A number of old plants in stock have been repotted.
