Mey.) Mabb. & Y.W. Yuan is a deciduous shrub or a small tree widely used as traditional medicine throughout its distributional range in tropical Africa. This study is aimed at providing a critical review of pharmacological properties, phytochemistry, and medicinal uses of V. glabra. Documented information on pharmacological properties, phytochemistry and medicinal uses of V. glabra was collected from several online sources such as Scopus, Google Scholar, PubMed and Science Direct, and pre-electronic sources such as book chapters, books, journal articles and scientific publications obtained from the university library. This study revealed that the bark, leaf and root infusion and/or decoction of V. glabra are mainly used as immune booster, protective charm, anthelmintic and ethnoveterinary medicine, and traditional medicine for convulsions, fractured bones, fever, wounds, gastro-intestinal problems, snake bite and respiratory diseases. Phytochemical compounds identified from the species include aliphatic glycosides, anthraquinones, cardiac glycosides, flavonoids, iridoid, phenols, saponins, steroids, tannins and triterpenoids. O experimento contou com vinte e sete fêmeas e nove machos, divididos em três grupos. Os chás foram preparados pelo método de infusão, utilizando-se folhas de plantas adultas obtidas em quintais residenciais. A partir do primeiro dia de acasalamento os animais foram submetidos a diferentes tratamentos: o (T1) recebeu água, o (T2) recebeu a dose de chá considerada coloquial e o (T3) recebeu uma dose 200% maior. Para avaliar a qualidade e verificar o estágio de desenvolvimento embrionário, no quarto dia de acasalamento, seis fêmeas de cada grupo foram submetidas a uma laparotomia abdominal mediana para que se procedesse a um lavado uterino que, depois de coletado, foi submetido a análise laboratorial. -

foods Review Multisensory Flavour Perception: Blending, Mixing, Fusion, and Pairing within and between the Senses Charles Spence Crossmodal Research Laboratory, Oxford University, Oxford OX2 6GG, UK; [email protected] Received: 28 February 2020; Accepted: 21 March 2020; Published: 1 April 2020 Abstract: This review summarizes the various outcomes that may occur when two or more elements are paired in the context of flavour perception. In the first part, I review the literature concerning what happens when flavours, ingredients, and/or culinary techniques are deliberately combined in a dish, drink, or food product. Sometimes the result is fusion but, if one is not careful, the result can equally well be confusion instead. In fact, blending, mixing, fusion, and flavour pairing all provide relevant examples of how the elements in a carefully-crafted multi-element tasting experience may be combined. While the aim is sometimes to obscure the relative contributions of the various elements to the mix (as in the case of blending), at other times, consumers/tasters are explicitly encouraged to contemplate/perceive the nature of the relationship between the contributing elements instead (e.g., as in the case of flavour pairing). There has been a noticeable surge in both popular and commercial interest in fusion foods and flavour pairing in recent years, and various of the ‘rules’ that have been put forward to help explain the successful combination of the elements in such food and/or beverage experiences are discussed. In the second part of the review, I examine the pairing of flavour stimuli with music/soundscapes, in the emerging field of ‘sonic seasoning’. -

Gaertn. and Clerodendrum splendens G. Don, two members of the cosmopolitan family Lamiaceae, are successfully acclimatized in Egypt. The current study aimed to evaluate the local plants as potential candidates for implementation in pharmaceutical industries, which necessitates an intensive investigation of safety and bioactivity of the cited species. To ensure quality and purity of the raw material, criteria for characterization of and/or discrimination between the two species were established via botanical profiling, proximate analysis, phytochemical screening and UPLC analysis. The leaves were subjected to comparative biological and chemical study to select the most suitable from the medicinal and economic standpoints. In this respect, the antioxidant cyotoxic and antimicrobial potentials of the defatted ethanol (70%) extracts of the tested samples were assessed in-vitro. Meanwhile, the chemical composition of the leaves was examined through qualitative and quantitative comparative analyses of the phenolic components. In this respect, The leaves of C. inerme were selected for more intensive both phytochemical and biological investigation. -

Box FM730, Famona, Bulawayo, Zimbabwe Vegetation Survey of Mt Gorongosa, page 2 SUMMARY Mount Gorongosa is a large inselberg almost 700 sq. km in extent in central Mozambique. With a vertical relief of between 900 and 1400 m above the surrounding plain, the highest point is at 1863 m. The mountain consists of a Lower Zone (mainly below 1100 m altitude) containing settlements and over which the natural vegetation cover has been strongly modified by people, and an Upper Zone in which much of the natural vegetation is still well preserved. Both zones are very important to the hydrology of surrounding areas. Immediately adjacent to the mountain lies Gorongosa National Park, one of Mozambique's main conservation areas. A key issue in recent years has been whether and how to incorporate the upper parts of Mount Gorongosa above 700 m altitude into the existing National Park, which is primarily lowland. [These areas were eventually incorporated into the National Park in 2010.] In recent years the unique biodiversity and scenic beauty of Mount Gorongosa have come under severe threat from the destruction of natural vegetation. This is particularly acute as regards moist evergreen forest, the loss of which has accelerated to alarming proportions. -
