DOLOMITI SNOW AND NATURE Glaciers, Nature, Snow and history The Dolomites (Dolomiti) are a beautiful mountain range in northern Italy. Homebase of the snow and sky lovers, this enchanting region offers more than one reason to be astonished: nature, trails, snow, glaciers, and historic sites as well. Our places of choice in the area, where a special tour can be arranged on request, are: Cortina d’Ampezzo Val Gardena: Beautifully situated in the center of a vast valley, the valley d’Ampezzo, crowned by the superb mountain peaks of Cristallo and Tofane, Cortina is the heart of the Dolomiti of the Veneto. The happy setting allows easy access to all the other nearby locations through the “passi”, passes, of Falzarego, Giau and Tre Croci. Cortina is the Queen of the Dolomiti and is the biggest and most famous of the 18 provinces that form the Ladinia. Cortina is situated at the top of the Valle del Boite, and is positioned between Cadore (south) and the Puster Valley(north), Val d' Ansiei (east) and Agordo (west). It is encircled 360° by the Dolomites. Among the more famous mountains are Tofane, Pomagagnon, Cristallo, Faloria and Sorapis, and Becco di Mezzodì, Croda da Lago and Cinque Torri. The city centre is located at an elevation of 1,224 metres (4,016 ft), although the highest summit is that of the Tofana di Mezzo, which towers at 3,244 metres (10,643 ft). There is a significant water presence in the territory, in the form of torrents, streams and little lakes (Ghedina, Pianozes, d'Ajal), which fill particularly during the summer snow-melt season.

Cortina d’Ampezzo www.infodolomiti.it THE DOLOMITES, A WORLD NATURAL HERITAGE SITE Listed by UNESCO for their beauty CORTINA - DOLOMITI and scientific importance Pag. 3 www.infodolomiti.it TRULY UNIQUE MOUNTAINS On 26 June 2009 the Dolomites became a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site. This status was awarded for their uniquely beautiful landscape and because of the scientific importance of their geology and geomorphology. The Dolomites are listed as a serial property because, despite its size and diversity, the entire range is considered to be a single unit. This extraordinary “fossil archipelago” consists of nine areas spread over five Italian provinces (Belluno, Bolzano, Pordenone, Trento, Udine), although the Province of Belluno is home to the greatest number of these magnificent peaks. CORTINA D’AMPEZZO An exclusive, elegant resort, loved the world over, Cortina is the beating heart of the Dolomites. Surrounded on every side by such magnificent peaks as Tofane, Cristallo and Pomagagnon, these mountains are all part of the Dolomite World Heritage Site, ma- king it the ideal place to experience the full glory of this exceptio- nal environment, with its stunning array of landscapes each with its own special character. Mountain ranges 1 (Pelmo-Croda da Lago), and 5 (Dolomiti Settentrionali) form a crown around Corti- na and also link with the other Dolomite ranges. This open-air laboratory has been a place of pilgrimage for over 150 years for scientists and students, making it the birthplace of some of the fundamental theories in the earth sciences. Cortina owes its enviable fame not only to the splendour of its landscape, but also to the warm welcome it extends to visitors, playing host to international sporting and cultural events that take on a very special magic when set in this mountain location.

Hopkins (1844 - 1889) Nomination of the Dolomites for inscription on the World Natural Heritage List UNESCO THE TENTATIVE LIST AND THE NOMINATION OF THE DOLOMITES This Nomination Document is the answer to the Decision to defer the previous nomination of the Dolomites (2005) expressed by the World Heritage Commit- tee during the Thirty-first Session Christchurch, New Zealand (23 June – 2 July 2007). In detail, the World Heritage Committee having examined Documents WHC-07/31. COM/8B and WHC-07/31.COM/INF.8B.2, defers the examination of the nomina- tion of The Dolomites, Italy, to the World Heritage List on the basis of criteria (vii) and (viii). As outlined in the document licensed by the Word Heritage Committee at the end of the 29th session held in Durban, South Africa, in July 2005, Italy has proposed the Dolomites as one of the sites deserving consideration for a possible future nomination as a site of outstanding universal value. The request was included in annex 1 of the Tentative List dated march 31st 2005, whereas the denomination ‘Dolomites’ is defined in annex 2 “Tentative List Sub- mission in accordance with decision 27 Com 8a” and annex 3 (Properties ac- cepted as meeting the requirements for Tentative List), within the scope of the broader denomination ‘Alps’, which also includes a) Western Alps and c) Eastern Alps, under the category ‘Natural Sites’.

Brixen itself is more than one thousand years old and is the place where German and Latin cultures merged) to the ancient town of Feltre. Through the centuries, Feltre became the core of Venetian culture on the border of the alpine mountains. It is precisely here on the green hills near to the River Piave and the Plain of Veneto that the Dolomites “Alta Via” n.2 reaches its end. The mountain range crossed by the “Alta Via” is one of the most famous in the Dolomites. Some peaks appear soft and inviting while others are dignified, haughty and as sharp as the turrets of old medieval castles. This long route is divided into 13 stages. The Plose, Peiterkofel, Púez, Sella, Marmolada Geisler mountain groups are good examples of the former while the Pale di San and the Alpi Feltrine are typical of the latter, with their arching peaks.

Sesto/Sexten Nature Park and Sella Pass (Dolomites). Altogether nine sites were sampled using 36 pitfall-traps during a whole year, from spring 1997 to spring 1998. Additionally alpine and nival habitats were sampled during summer 1996. 1997 and 1998 by hand collecting. The total material captured by pitfalls comprises 2512 adult and 440 inadult spiders. 110 species in 12 families. Dominant families are Linyphiidae (54 % of total adult specimens). Lycosidae (35 %), Thomisidae (4 %) and Gnaphosidae (2,5 %). Additionally 91 adult and 269 inadult harvestmen were colltected. 9 species in 4 families (58% Phalangiidae. 28 % Nemastomatidae. 8 % Trogulidae and 6 % Ischyropsalididae). At several summits additional 6 spider spe- cies and ! harvestman were captured by hand. Species number, diversity value ^log) according to SHANNON-WEAVER and evenness were calculated for each site. The effects of environmental factors and the relationship between species were in- vestigated by correspondence analysis. The spider and harvestman communites were also compared with previous studies in the Northern Dolomites and m the Central Alps. The alpine grasslands of the northern Dolomites are dominated by spider spe- cies belonging to the family Lycosidae.
