But the label on the box indicated it had come from the Michigan hinterlands, telling me that it was a gift from my Uncle Tom Oakey. I have always enjoyed Tom’s company when it was to be had, but between his career as a Michigan State Police officer, and his passion for hunting and other ways to spend time in the wilderness, it was a challenge to keep up with him. Tom inherited some genes shared with his great Uncle Arthur Oakey, and his cousin Washington Joseph Oakey, who was once trapped in a tree by a wounded moose for several hours. Arthur was a one-time high school principal who seems to have retreated to a cabin in the woods and spent the bulk of his last 20 years up in the forests around Rhinelander. The preserved skin and head of a fairly robust black bear decorated a wall or the back of a couch in my grandmother’s house, courtesy of Tom’s marksmanship. 4. Northern England 1. Progress in Hell Northern England was both the center of the European industrial revolution and the birthplace of industrial music. From the early nineteenth century, coal and steel works fueled the economies of cities like Manchester and She!eld and shaped their culture and urban aesthetics. By 1970, the region’s continuous mandate of progress had paved roads and erected buildings that told 150 years of industrial history in their ugly, collisive urban planning—ever new growth amidst the expanding junkyard of old progress. In the BBC documentary Synth Britannia, the narrator declares that “Victorian slums had been torn down and replaced by ultramodern concrete highrises,” but the images on the screen show more brick ruins than clean futurescapes, ceaselessly "ashing dystopian sky- lines of colorless smoke.1 Chris Watson of the She!eld band Cabaret Voltaire recalls in the late 1960s “being taken on school trips round the steelworks . just seeing it as a vision of hell, you know, never ever wanting to do that.”2 #is outdated hell smoldered in spite of the city’s supposed growth and improve- ment; a$er all, She!eld had signi%cantly enlarged its administrative territory in 1967, and a year later the M1 motorway opened easy passage to London 170 miles south, and wasn’t that progress? Institutional modernization neither erased northern England’s nineteenth- century combination of working-class pride and disenfranchisement nor of- fered many genuinely new possibilities within culture and labor, the Open Uni- versity notwithstanding. In literature and the arts, it was a long-acknowledged truism that any municipal attempt at utopia would result in totalitarianism.

A SELECTIVE ROADMAP OF SOME OF NEW HAVEN’S MOST ICONIC CONCRETE LANDMARKS Entering New Haven by car along Interstate 95 offers a tour through one of America’s last remaining Brutalist corridors. This model was expanded upon by musicians in England and Germany during the late-1970s who developed the popular music style called Industrial as a fusion of experimental popular music sounds, performance art theatricality, and avant-garde composition.

  • The ELO Story
The ELO Story Jeff Lynne was born in industrial Birmingham, England, on December 30, 1947. He grew up in the then- new Shard End City Council housing estate, a high-density residential development built on the eastern edge of the city right after the Second World War, with his parents Philip and Nancy.1 He had a brother and two sisters.2 Lynne’s grandparents in his father’s side were vaudevillian performers.3 More than thirty years later, Lynne would pay tribute to his birthplace in the ELO song “All Over the World,” which mentions Shard End alongside other cities like London, Paris, Amsterdam, Rio de Janiero, and Tokyo. Lynne was a Brummie, a nickname for those blessed with the notoriously thick local Birmingham accent.4 Brummie is shorthand for Brummagem, the popular West Midlands way of pronouncing Birmingham.5 Brummie also has an unfortunate alternative dictionary definition: “counterfeit, cheap, and showy.”6 The accent, which not everyone in the city shares, has even been described as representing the least intelligent dialect in the British Isles.7 Lynne grew up listening to Del Shannon, Roy Orbison,8 Chuck Berry, and The Shadows records.9 His parents did not always approve. About Roy Orbison’s “Only the Lonely” playing on the radio, Jeff said “[t]hey were complaining that it was too sexy, or something, but that voice just made the hairs go up on my neck.”10 At age thirteen, Lynne attended a concert by Del Shannon at Birmingham Town Hall, and from that point on dedicated his life to music.11 He noticed immediately that live performances
