TODAY We Are Celebrating Our Children's Slava SVETI SAVA
ST. ELIJAH SERBIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH 2200 Irwin Street, Aliquippa, PA 15001 Rev. Branislav Golic, Parish Priest e-mail: [email protected] Parish Office: 724-375-4074 webpage: stelijahaliquippa.com Center Office: 724-375-9894 JANUARY 26, 2020 ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Saint Sava Born Prince Rastko Nemanjic, son of the Serbian ruler and founder of the Serbian medieval state Stefan Nemanja, St. Sava became the first Patriarch of Serbia (1219-1233) and is an important Saint in the Serbian Orthodox Church. As a young boy, Rastko left home to join the Orthodox monastic colony on Mount Athos and was given the name Sava. In 1197 his father, King Stefan Nemanja, joined him. In 1198 they moved to and restored the abandoned monastery Hilandar, which was at that time the center of Serbian Orthodox monastic life. St. Sava's father took the monastic vows under the name Simeon, and died in Hilandar on February 13, 1200. He is also canonized a saint of the Church. After his father's death, Sava retreated to an ascetic monastery in Kareya which he built himself in 1199. He also wrote the Kareya typicon both for Hilandar and for the monastery of ascetism. The last typicon is inscribed into the marble board at the ascetic monastery, which today also exists there. He stayed on Athos until the end of 1207, when he persuaded the Patriarch of Constantinople to elevate him to the position of first Serbian archbishop, thereby establishing the independence of the archbishopric of the Serbian Orthodox Church in the year 1219. Saint Sava is celebrated as the founder of the independent Serbian Orthodox Church and as the patron saint of education and medicine among Serbs. -
SOUTH SERBIA 5 Days – by Bus Or by Car
SOUTH SERBIA 5 days – by bus or by car TRAVEL PROGRAM: 1.dan BELGRADE. Landing at the airport Nikola Tesla. Transfer to the hotel. Dinner. Overnight stay. 2.dan BELGRADE. Breakfast. Departure of sightseeing city tour by bus and on foot. Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, is one of the oldest cities in Europe which has been a crucial junction since times before and a crossroad between East and West Europe. Belgrade lays on two international rivers, on the delta of Sava and Danube and the river waters surround it from three sides. Its location rightfully earned it a nickname “the gate to Balkans” and “the door of Central Europe”. The oldest archeological findings from this area date to the fifth millennia before Christ. In the historical center of Belgrade, in 1938, during the construction of Albanija Palace and where it still stands today, the remains of a Neanderthal, who died fighting a mammoth, were found. His remains were found in the vicinity, which testifies to an existence of a habitat on the territory of today’s Belgrade even in the prehistoric times. On the river bank of Danube a prehistoric settlement Vinca can be found, with the remains of artifacts of a prehistoric man. A Celtic tribe has founded Singidunum in 3 rd century BC and the city is even mentioned in some ancient sources. Later on, this territory was occupied by Romans and with the division of the empire in year 395 it becomes a part of Byzantine Empire. In the 6 th century the Slavs have started crossing the river more often and then permanently stayed in this area, and so, on the rocky highland over the delta of river Sava their settlement has been created – Beli Grad – White City. -
Introduction
Introduction Speaking in Ljubljana in 1913, the Slovene poet Ivan Cankar called for a political union of the South Slavs, lamenting the historical circumstances that had brought about the cultural estrangement of the “Yugoslav tribe”: “By blood we are brothers, by language cousins, by culture -- which is the fruit of centuries of separate upbringing -- we are less familiar with one another than the Upper Carniolan peasant is with the Tyrolean, or the Gorizian vintner with the Friulian” (Cankar 2009). The postulate of cultural separation, or “separate upbringing” as Cankar eloquently expressed it, is built on the premise that ethnic and national features are forged over the longue durée, through centuries of constant and unwavering exposure to one cultural model or civilization. The national predispositions and inclinations thus acquired are believed to supersede evident commonalities such as language and local custom -- as in the case of the Serbs and Croats, who are bound by language but separated by confessional and perceived historical allegiances. This premise is central to the narratives of the Balkan nationalisms. Thus, according to Croatian nationalists and historians such as Ivo Banac, Franjo Tuđman, and Branimir Anzulović, the Orthodox Serbs, whose medieval principalities bordered the Byzantine Empire until their destruction by the Ottomans in the fifteenth century, had over the centuries developed different habits and worldviews from the Catholic Croats. Their cultural origins, these authors claimed, lie in the Byzantine civilization (Banac 1984: 65 et passim; Tuđman, cit. in Bellamy 2003: 68; Anzulović 1999: 17 et passim). Many nationalists in Serbia would agree with the assessment that the Byzantine civilization left a deep imprint on the formation of their culture and identity (Perica 2002: 6-9). -

ideologija MISTIFIKACIJE I ASIMILATORSKI SMISAO IDEOLOGIJE SVETOSAVLJA Danilo Radojević Critical historiography has come to some important answers concerning the essence of the Serbian church-national ideology of svetosavlje and the manner of its spreading. Using old and making up new forgeries, some authors from the circle of the Serbian Orthodox Church are continuing to create a false image of this ideology. This text deals with researching propaganda methods of the so called svetosavlje. The First Coronation Churches of Medieval Serbia
Jovanka Kalić* https://doi.org/10.2298/BALC1748007K UDC 94(497.11-89)"10/12" Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts Original scholarly work Belgrade http://www.balcanica.rs The First Coronation Churches of Medieval Serbia Abstract: The medieval ceremony of coronation as a rule took place in the most important church of a realm. The sites of the coronation of Serbian rulers before the establishment of the Žiča monastery church as the coronation church of Serbian kings in the first half of the thirteenth century have not been reliably identified so far. Based on the surviving me- dieval sources and the archaeological record, this paper provides background information about the titles of Serbian rulers prior to the creation of the Nemanjić state, and proposes that Stefan, son of the founder of the Nemanjić dynasty, was crowned king (1217) in the church of St Peter in Ras. Keywords: Serbia, corona regni, Stefan the First-Crowned, Sava of Serbia, Žiča monastery oronation sites of medieval monarchs hold an important place in the “cul- Ctural geography” of European nations. They are a major subject of every history because the rite of coronation sums up previous history and, as a rule, announces the one that lies ahead. The rite encompasses the totality of the cir- cumstances of a given community, political as well as religious, at that particular moment. In the context of such interrelatedness of phenomena, the coronation site carries multiple meanings. There is, of course, nothing random about it in a society based on the Christian view of the world and the monarch’s supreme au- thority. -
Srbija U XII I XIII Veku

This is a historical overview of the importance and use of stone from prehistoric times to the Middle Ages, when the most imposing religious architectural structures were built. The significance of Studenica marble is particularly manifested in the Virgin’s Church at the Studenica Monastery. For its marble façades and artistic architectural elements, among other things, the church was inscribed in the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage List in 1986. Through centuries, the Virgin’s Church suffered multiple destructions. In order to restore the marble façades properly and its architectural elements, the marble deposits where the stone was once quarried had to be located anew. When the stone material characterisation had been performed, the right stone was selected for the complex conservation works on the churches in Studenica and Sopocani. A practical implementation of the research results raised the awareness of the marble deposits in the Studenica vicinity, being also part of the national heritage. -
