Starting from the fact that our understanding of reality is mediated by culture-conditioned ideas, I wanted to examine the process of constructing perceptions of the monasteries of the Serbian Orthodox Church. Organized pilgrimages were taken as the framework of this study, since it is a complex interaction of different actors (tour operators and guides, monks and pilgrims) who, each in their own way, show interest in the monastic institution. This type of pilgrimage has become very popular and widespread during the last few decades in Serbia. On the one hand, I approach organized pilgrimages as a way of traveling and on the other hand, as a way of transmitting and disseminating information about the monasteries of the Serbian Orthodox Church. In other words, there is a certain possibility of controlling the discourse about monasteries, but also about Orthodoxy in general. Likewise, pilgrimages can be seen as a framework within which the basic paradigms of Serbian Orthodoxy are constructed and considered: different actors exchange their own experience and knowledge of monasteries, consolidating or reexamining the existing models of beliefs and practices. The group trip to the pilgrimage site is filled with certain, not necessarily, religious content - historical data and stories, promoting a certain system of values and opinions, defining practices related to the dressing and behavior, political attitudes, and also with interpreting what pilgrims heard, saw and experienced. By focusing on organized pilgrimages, I wanted to determine how monasteries, as the most common pilgrimage destinations of the Serbian Orthodox Church, are represented in these trips by tour operators and representatives of the Serbian Orthodox Church, to reveal if the discourses of pilgrimages are harmonized, as well as what is the individual response to the offered or imposed ideas that come from the institutional level. One of the main tasks of the research was to make a formal analysis of pilgrimages in the modern period. This meant describing such trips in detail, creating an ideal model thereof, identifying their main elements and phases, and identifying and describing functions and interrelations of all the elements. In this respect, travel operators stand out as the most important, but also the least known factors. They also appear as mediators, as well as authorities and initiators of the process, with the ability and power to control the whole process, and thus the intensity and the way in which others experience and represent the monasteries. The purpose of research was to understand the significance and role that these trips have in the making and distribution of narratives about different monasteries of the Serbian Orthodox Church, i.e. to verify the role of pilgrimages in constructing notions about the monasteries of the Serbian Orthodox Church among pilgrims. The doctoral dissertation is based on ethnographic research conducted in the period 2013–2019. • Cultural Heritage, Reconstruction and National Identity in Kosovo
1 DOI: 10.14324/111.444.amps.2013v3i1.001 Title: Identity and Conflict: Cultural Heritage, Reconstruction and National Identity in Kosovo Author: Anne-Françoise Morel Architecture_media_politics_society. vol. 3, no.1. May 2013 Affiliation: Universiteit Gent Abstract: The year 1989 marked the six hundredth anniversary of the defeat of the Christian Prince of Serbia, Lazard I, at the hands of the Ottoman Empire in the “Valley of the Blackbirds,” Kosovo. On June 28, 1989, the very day of the battle's anniversary, thousands of Serbs gathered on the presumed historic battle field bearing nationalistic symbols and honoring the Serbian martyrs buried in Orthodox churches across the territory. They were there to hear a speech delivered by Slobodan Milosevic in which the then- president of the Socialist Republic of Serbia revived Lazard’s mythic battle and martyrdom. It was a symbolic act aimed at establishing a version of history that saw Kosovo as part of the Serbian nation. It marked the commencement of a violent process of subjugation that culminated in genocide. Fully integrated into the complex web of tragic violence that was to ensue was the targeting and destruction of the region’s architectural and cultural heritage. As with the peoples of the region, this heritage crossed geopolitical “boundaries.” Through the fluctuations of history, Kosovo's heritage had already become subject to divergent temporal, geographical, physical and even symbolical forces. During the war it was to become a focal point of clashes between these forces and, as Anthony D. Smith argues with regard to cultural heritage more generally, it would be seen as “a legacy belonging to the past of ‘the other,’” which, in times of conflict, opponents try “to damage or even deny.” Today, the scars of this conflict, its damage and its denial are still evident.

As a young boy, Rastko left home to join the Orthodox monastic colony on Mount Athos and was given the name Sava. In 1197 his father, King Stefan Nemanja, joined him. In 1198 they moved to and restored the abandoned monastery Hilandar, which was at that time the center of Serbian Orthodox monastic life. St. Sava's father took the monastic vows under the name Simeon, and died in Hilandar on February 13, 1200. He is also canonized a saint of the Church. After his father's death, Sava retreated to an ascetic monastery in Kareya which he built himself in 1199. He also wrote the Kareya typicon both for Hilandar and for the monastery of ascetism. The last typicon is inscribed into the marble board at the ascetic monastery, which today also exists there. He stayed on Athos until the end of 1207, when he persuaded the Patriarch of Constantinople to elevate him to the position of first Serbian archbishop, thereby establishing the independence of the archbishopric of the Serbian Orthodox Church in the year 1219. Saint Sava is celebrated as the founder of the independent Serbian Orthodox Church and as the patron saint of education and medicine among Serbs.

Mojzes, Rosemont College Dr. Kyriakos M. Kontopoulos, External Reader, Department of Sociology © by Angela Valeria Ilić 2012 All Rights Reserved ii ABSTRACT This dissertation examines a series of interchurch consultations that took place between 1999 and 2009 with the participation of the Evangelical Church in Germany, the Roman Catholic German Bishops’ Conference and the Serbian Orthodox Church. The Protestant-Catholic-Orthodox ecumenical encounters began in the immediate aftermath of the Kosovo crisis, and aimed to support Serbia’s democratization and European integration. At a total of nine meetings, delegates from the participating churches, together with politicians, representatives of non-governmental organizations, and scholars from various fields, discussed the role of churches and religion in the two countries. The meetings provided a forum for exchanging knowledge and addressing the challenges confronting the churches and their social organizations. Through lectures, discussions, and meetings in working groups, the consultations focused on theological, legal, political, and social topics, such as church and state relations in Serbia, the role of churches in secularized society, Serbia’s relationship to the rest of Europe, reconciliation, and the healing of memories. Focusing on the content and the outcomes of the consultations, the author places them into the broader ecumenical, social and political context in which they took place.

SOUTH SERBIA 5 days – by bus or by car TRAVEL PROGRAM: 1.dan BELGRADE. Landing at the airport Nikola Tesla. Transfer to the hotel. Dinner. Overnight stay. 2.dan BELGRADE. Breakfast. Departure of sightseeing city tour by bus and on foot. Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, is one of the oldest cities in Europe which has been a crucial junction since times before and a crossroad between East and West Europe. Belgrade lays on two international rivers, on the delta of Sava and Danube and the river waters surround it from three sides. Its location rightfully earned it a nickname “the gate to Balkans” and “the door of Central Europe”. The oldest archeological findings from this area date to the fifth millennia before Christ. In the historical center of Belgrade, in 1938, during the construction of Albanija Palace and where it still stands today, the remains of a Neanderthal, who died fighting a mammoth, were found. His remains were found in the vicinity, which testifies to an existence of a habitat on the territory of today’s Belgrade even in the prehistoric times. On the river bank of Danube a prehistoric settlement Vinca can be found, with the remains of artifacts of a prehistoric man. A Celtic tribe has founded Singidunum in 3 rd century BC and the city is even mentioned in some ancient sources. Later on, this territory was occupied by Romans and with the division of the empire in year 395 it becomes a part of Byzantine Empire. In the 6 th century the Slavs have started crossing the river more often and then permanently stayed in this area, and so, on the rocky highland over the delta of river Sava their settlement has been created – Beli Grad – White City.

United Nations S/2008/692 Security Council Distr.: General 24 November 2008 Original: English Report of the Secretary-General on the United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo I. Introduction 1. The present report is submitted pursuant to Security Council resolution 1244 (1999), by which the Council decided to establish the United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK) and requested me to report at regular intervals on the implementation of the mandate. It covers the activities of UNMIK, and developments related thereto, from 26 June to 31 October 2008. II. Political situation 2. With the entry into force of the “Constitution of the Republic of Kosovo” on 15 June, the Kosovo authorities have continued to take steps towards asserting Kosovo’s statehood. Following the establishment of a Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Kosovo authorities announced the opening of diplomatic missions and the appointment of mission heads to 10 countries. As at 31 October, Kosovo had been recognized as an independent state by 52 countries. In its ongoing efforts to assume the prerogatives and responsibilities of a sovereign state, Kosovo applied for membership in the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank Group, decided to undertake a census of the population, established a Ministry for Security Forces and appointed a new, 11-member Central Election Commission. The Assembly of Kosovo continues to pass legislation, which is now adopted without reference to the powers of my Special Representative under resolution 1244 (1999) or the Constitutional Framework. 3. On 8 October, the General Assembly adopted a resolution submitted by Serbia requesting the International Court of Justice to issue an advisory opinion on the following question: “Is the unilateral declaration of independence by the Provisional Institutions of Self-Government in Kosovo in accordance with international law?”.

The beginning of that struggle is connected to the year 1814, when, in the royal city of Vienna, Vuk’s first grammar book came out: The Orthography of the Serbian Lan- guage Based on the Speech of the Common Folk, which dealt with resolving the three most important standard-related issues: a) the issue of the Serbian orthography, b) the issue of the morpho- logical structure of the Serbian language, and c) the issue of the name of the language and its national boundaries. Rare are the languages, if, indeed, there are any, which have had such a turbulent history of two hundred years. The histor- ical development of a language can be followed at two histor- ical levels: that of its internal and that of its external history.
