    Goessens, This is the soundtrack… InterDisciplines 1 (2014) This is the soundtrack of our identity: National mythscapes in music and the construction of collective identity through music in early Flemish radio (1929–1939) Lieselotte Goessens Introduction This article is a condensation of a larger study on discourses and music programs in Flemish radio in the interwar period, which is to be pub- lished as a doctoral dissertation (in Dutch) later this year (Goessens forthcoming). Basis of the study is the scrutiny of discourses in both radio magazines and newspapers as well as the program of Flemish radio stations.1 Both article and larger study are informed by a constructivist ontological and epistemological view of meaning and identities. Firstly, both identities and the meaning of music are viewed as social and thus discursive constructs. Secondly, the relation between collective identities and music is described in two ways: 1) Music is considered to have a strong emotional appeal and a catalytic function that enables it to pro- duce strong feelings of togetherness. This makes music a common driving force in social and national movements. 2) Music can be used in an emblematic way to express identity. This expression of identity is however mainly the expression of an ideal, and thus itself a contribution to the construction of that identity. In this article it will be argued that early Flemish Catholic radio used music both in a catalytic and in an emblematic way to further Flemish cultural emancipation and to construct a Flemish cultural identity. The University of Sheffield Bringing politics back in: the impact of extreme-right parties on immigration policy in the UK, France and Italy during the 2000s João Miguel Duarte de Carvalho A thesis submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Department of Politics Faculty of Social Sciences Sheffield, February 2012 Abstract This comparative study examines the impact of extreme-right parties on immigration policy in the UK, France and Italy between 2001 and 2009. The thesis develops a synthesis of two different strands of work in political science: the extreme-right parties’ literature alongside immigration studies. Immigration studies often refer to extreme-right parties as a factor behind restrictive developments on immigration policy whilst ERP literature refers often to immigration but tell us very little about its complexity. Past comparative research throughout the 1990s suggested that members of the extreme-right party family exhibit similar significant levels of impact across different countries. This thesis compares whether the British National Party, the French Front National and the Italian Lega Nord had a significant impact on the three dimensions of immigration politics and policy: inter-party competition; public attitudes; and immigration policy development in the UK, France and Italy.

Office of the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for the Great Lakes in Africa MEDIA MONITORING 11 June 2015 PRESS STATEMENT PRESS STATEMENT BUJUMBURA, 10 JUNE 2015 The Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for the Great Lakes Region, Said Djinnit, and members of the facilitation team that joined and supported the dialogue between the Burundian parties, met today in Bujumbura with members of the diplomatic corps. During this meeting, the Special Envoy briefed the participants on the dialogue who he facilitated starting from 5 May 2015, at the request of the Burundian parties who had agreed, by themselves, on the agenda as well as the list of participants. The Special Envoy recalled that during the dialogue, the parties maintained diverging views on the candidature of President Nkurunziza for a third term. He highlighted the progress made on the other four agenda items, namely: the appeasement measures and mutual commitments; the management of the electoral calendar; guarantees for the holding of free, transparent, inclusive and peaceful elections; and protection of Constitutional rights and freedoms. The conclusions of the dialogue are reflected in the attached 29 May press communiqué. The Special Envoy commended the Burundian parties, in particular, for the set of recommendations adopted by consensus at the 28 May dialogue session, on the right to information and the reopening of private radio and television stations damaged during the 13-14 May events.
