Many international scholars; be them from the east and west, Muslims or non-Muslims; recognize Muslim scholarship in Religionswissenschaft (Religious Studies). In sum, comparative study of religions is regarded as one of the great contributions of Muslim’s civilization to mankind’s intellectual progress. Nevertheless, when referring to the popular works of Muslim scholars in this discipline, most people will refer to only some treatises with negligence to the great bulk of Muslim Heritage in Religionswissenschaft.

  • JOURNAL of RELIGIOUS THOUGHT: a QUARTERLY of SHIRAZ UNIVERSITY Spiritual Walayah Or Love in the Mathnavi Mawlavi: a Shi'ite
JOURNAL OF RELIGIOUS THOUGHT: A QUARTERLY OF SHIRAZ UNIVERSITY VOL.1 (New), NO.1, (Ser. 10), SPRING 2004 Spiritual Walayah or Love in the Mathnavi Mawlavi: A Shi‘ite View Dr. Sharam Pazouki∗ Abstract In its true meaning, walayah means love, a believer is a lover and faith is love. The main topic of the Mathnavi is love. In this poem, Mawlavi speaks of the nature of love, the way to it, its master and perils. Among the three approaches to religion, that is, narrative, rational and heartfelt, he chooses the last because it is the way of faith and love, or walayah. He considers ‘Ali to be the source or wali for this way after the Prophet. Thus the Mathnavi is also a book of walayah, and Mawlavi is a Shi‘ite, not in the current sense of the jurists or dialectical theologians, but in its true meaning, that is, belief in the continuing spirituality and walayah of the Prophet in the person of ‘Ali, and belief that after the Prophet there is always a living guide (wali) on the way of love. Key Words: 1- Mawlavi 2- Love 3- Walayah 4- Mathnavi 1. Approaches to Islam There are three main approaches to Islam found among classical Muslim authors: narration, reason and the heart. Among various Muslim scholars, it is only the Sufis who have followed the way of the heart. According to this way, God is not only the divine legislator, to Whom one prays with fear of hell and yearning to enter paradise, but He is the Beloved.1 The way of the heart is the way of love, in which the wayfarer purifies his heart until he gains union with God.

Coming to Terms: Fundamentalists or Islamists? by Martin Kramer Middle East Quarterly Spring 2003, pp. 6577 http://www.meforum.org/541/comingtotermsfundamentalistsorislamists No one who reads or writes about events in the Muslim world can avoid the question of how to label those Muslims who invoke Islam as the source of authority for all political and social action. Should they be labeled Islamic (or Muslim) fundamentalists? Or are they better described as Islamists? The issue has been the subject of a heated debate for two decades. For a while, both general and scholarly usage in America accepted fundamentalism. Islamism emerged in the late 1980s in French academe and then crossed into English, where it eventually displaced Islamic fundamentalism in specialized contexts. More recently, the term Islamism has gained even wider currency, and since September 11, 2001, it may even have established itself as the preferred American usage. Still newer terminology may lie over the horizon. Behind the battle over usage lies another struggle, over the nature of the phenomenon itself. In fact, the two contests, over English usage and analytical understanding, are inseparable. Nor are they free of associations left by past usages. Here follows a short history of changing usage—itself a history of changing Western perceptions of Muslim reality. The Debut of Islamism The term Islamism first appeared in French in the mideighteenth century. But it did not refer to the modern ideological use of Islam, which had not yet come into being. Rather, it was a synonym for the religion of the Muslims, which was then known in French as mahométisme, the religion professed and taught by the Prophet Muhammad.

  • Modernization of the Islamic Society -A Review of Three Studies
REVIEWS MODERNIZATION OF THE ISLAMIC SOCIETY - A Review of Three Studies published by the Institute of Asian Economic Affairs- TERUTARO NISHINO Chato no Kindaika to Isuramu-kyo (Modernization in the Middle East and Islam), a monograph by Hajime Kobayashi, 1961, 220 pp. Arahu Shokoku no Shakai Keizai Ki/<'o (Socio-Economic Structure of Arab Coun tries), edited by Shinji Maejima, 1961, 330 pp. Indoneshia no Seji Shakai Kozo (Politico-Economic Structure of Indonesia), edit ed by Yoichi Itagaki, 1961, 283 pp. "The Islamic society" is a concept which I use sometimes with certain doubts about its validity. The term has been applied indiscriminately to those societies where an overwhelming sector of religious belief is Islamic. In this sense, such countries as Indonesia in Southeast Asia, and Guinea and Nigeria in West Africa are also "Islamic societies". After making a tour in these areas, however, I have found neither in Southeast Asia nor in West Africa that any pressing problem has been raised as to whether Islam would be a deterrent to the modernization of those societies. On the other hand, the problem of modernizing Islam has been of great importance in the Middle East, and Arab countries in particular. Identifying this problem of Islam and modernization as the key issue, I will give an outline of, and some personal comments on, the three reports of the Institute of Asian Economic Affairs as listed above. In so doing, I should hasten to add that my discussion will be somewhat one-sided, for I shall concentrate on the issue I have mentioned.

CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO A New Reading on Authority and Guardianship (wilayah): Ayatollah Muhammad Mahdi Shamsuddin Hamid Mavani Islam categorically rejects dictatorship because it always leads to oppression, persecution, and uprising.1 From the Islamic point of view, only the divine (most exalted), who has no partner or associate in His Lordship, Authority, and Guardianship (wilayah), has the right to govern and enjoy absolute rule. In essence, no human being has any right to rule over others. The rule and control of God is the only type of guardianship and authority that complies with human reason and intellect. Every mandate of authority and governance (hakimiyyah) for a human being requires a definitive proof. In its absence, therefore, no one has authority over another person, any other existent in the universe, or over nature, including over one’s own life and property. That these set limits cannot be transgressed is a fundamental principle under the subject of authority, as well as a matter that is well-established in jurisprudence and theology . 178 DEMOCRATIC MOMENTS [I]nvoking democracy while the infallible Imam is among us would be religiously unlawful, but .

PAKISTAN RESPONSE TOWARDS TERRORISM: A CASE STUDY OF MUSHARRAF REGIME By: SHABANA FAYYAZ A thesis Submitted to the University of Birmingham For the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Department of Political Science and International Studies The University of Birmingham May 2010 University of Birmingham Research Archive e-theses repository This unpublished thesis/dissertation is copyright of the author and/or third parties. ABSTRACT The ranging course of terrorism banishing peace and security prospects of today’s Pakistan is seen as a domestic effluent of its own flawed policies, bad governance, and lack of social justice and rule of law in society and widening gulf of trust between the rulers and the ruled. The study focused on policies and performance of the Musharraf government since assuming the mantle of front ranking ally of the United States in its so called ‘war on terror’. The causes of reversal of pre nine-eleven position on Afghanistan and support of its Taliban’s rulers are examined in the light of the geo-strategic compulsions of that crucial time and the structural weakness of military rule that needed external props for legitimacy. The flaws of the response to the terrorist challenges are traced to its total dependence on the hard option to the total neglect of the human factor from which the thesis develops its argument for a holistic approach to security in which the people occupy a central position.
