Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2004-2019. 6186. https://stars.library.ucf.edu/etd/6186 A QUALITATIVE ANALYSIS OF KEY CONCEPTS IN ISLAM FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF IMAMS by CHANDLER DOBIYANSKI Bachelor of Arts, University of Arkansas, 2015 A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Nicholson School of Communication and Media in the College of Sciences at the University of Central Florida Orlando, Florida Fall Term 2018 Major Professor: Jonathan Matusitz ABSTRACT The continuous occurrence of terrorist attacks in the name of Islam has shown this ideology and its tenets are at least somewhat connected to jihadists committing attacks in its name. This ideology in terms of 13 themes was investigated by the researcher in 58 sermons outlined in the tables in the appendix. These themes include: brotherhood, death, freedom, human rights, justice and equality, love, oppression, peace and treaty, self-defense, sin, submission, terrorism and truth vs. lies. The researcher used a sample of 10 sermons from U.S.- born imams and 10 sermons from foreign-born imams as the basis for the analysis for the theories and themes. Conducting a thematic analysis of U.S.-born and foreign-born imams’ sermons, the researcher uncovered their true interpretations of these themes. Following this, the researcher investigated the imams’ speech codes. The researcher found that imams who were born in the United States focused more on religious speech codes compared to the international imams who focused more prominently on cultural speech codes. In terms of social codes, foreign-born imams seem to be more focused on relationships, while those born in the United States focuses more on religious conduct. In terms of religious codes, foreign-born imams seem to have a checklist of requirements in how to act, including referencing believers vs. disbelievers and historical aspects of the codes, while those born in the United States focused on more codes that referred to everyday activities, people and the kind of conduct that a Muslim should have. In terms of cultural codes, foreign-born imams seem to have an immediate need to physically defend against outside forces. This is compared to the United States-born imams, who discuss how to better oneself, how cultural aspects are a distraction and how Muslim converts are more inspirational than the Muslim-born since     Hezbollah’s Syrian Quagmire BY MATTHEW LEVITT ezbollah – Lebanon’s Party of God – is many things. It is one of the dominant political parties in Lebanon, as well as a social and religious movement catering first and fore- Hmost (though not exclusively) to Lebanon’s Shi’a community. Hezbollah is also Lebanon’s largest militia, the only one to maintain its weapons and rebrand its armed elements as an “Islamic resistance” in response to the terms of the Taif Accord, which ended Lebanon’s civil war and called for all militias to disarm.1 While the various wings of the group are intended to complement one another, the reality is often messier. In part, that has to do with compartmen- talization of the group’s covert activities. But it is also a factor of the group’s multiple identities – Lebanese, pan-Shi’a, pro-Iranian – and the group’s multiple and sometimes competing goals tied to these different identities. Hezbollah insists that it is Lebanese first, but in fact, it is an organization that always acts out of its self-interests above its purported Lebanese interests. According to the U.S. Treasury Department, Hezbollah also has an “expansive global network” that “is sending money and operatives to carry out terrorist attacks around the world.”2 Over the past few years, a series of events has exposed some of Hezbollah’s covert and militant enterprises in the region and around the world, challenging the group’s standing at home and abroad. Hezbollah operatives have been indicted for the murder of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri by the UN Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) in The Hague,3 arrested on charges of plotting attacks in Nigeria,4 and convicted on similar charges in Thailand and Cyprus.5 Hezbollah’s criminal enterprises, including drug running and money laundering from South America to Africa to the Middle East, have been targeted by law enforcement and regulatory agen- cies.

    Forgiveness and Repentance in Islam As-Salaam 'Alaykum wa Rahmatullaahi wa Barakaatuh. Bismillah Walhamdulillah Was Salaatu Was Salaam 'ala Rasulillah It is said: “To err is human and to forgive is divine.” Islam speaks about two elements of forgiveness: a) God’s forgiveness; and b) Human forgiveness. We need both because we do wrong in our relations to God as well as in our relations to one another. There are many names of God given in the Qur’an. They are called “Most beautiful names” and they indicate many different and diverse attributes and qualities of God. Some of these names are related to His mercy and forgiveness. Let us look at some of these names: 1. Al-Ghafoor (The Most Forgiving): This name occurs in the Qur’an more than 70 times. There are other names from the same root, such as Ghafir and Ghaffar. The meaning of the Arabic word “ghafara” is to cover, to hide and from it comes the meaning “to excuse,” “to pardon,” “to remit” and “to forgive.” God does all these things. In the Qur’an, it is mentioned that God does not forgive the Shirk (without repentance) but He may forgive every other sin for whomsoever He wills (4:116). We must turn to God to seek His forgiveness. 2. Al-`Afuw (The Pardoner): This has another part of forgiveness. This name occurs in the Qur’an five times. Literally, the word ‘Afw means “to release,” “to heal,” “to restore,” “to remit.” Thus in relation to God, it means “to release us from the burden of punishment due to our sins and mistakes; to restore our honour after we have dishonoured ourselves by committing sins and making mistakes.” Sometimes in the Qur’an both names, Afuw and Ghafoor, come together.

    Radicalization in the Service of the Revolution: Iran, Hezbollah, and the Shi’ite population in Europe Danny Citrinowicz Report n.19, December 2020 Radicalization in the Service of the Revolution: Iran, Hezbollah, and the Shi’ite population in Europe Danny Citrinowicz, senior research fellow at the Abba Eban Institute for International Diplomacy in Israel European Eye on Radicalization Background Recently, following Islamist terrorist attacks in France and Austria, the discourse in Europe has increasingly turned to what can be done to monitor and curb those inciting such attacks by laying down the ideological basis for them.1 Naturally, since these attacks have come from the Islamic State (ISIS), most of the focus has been on those Sunni religious centers and mosques that have, directly or indirectly, assisted the terrorists. However, the discussion currently taking place across the European Continent misses a key facet of the Islamist challenge by focusing exclusively on its Sunni component, and ignoring the institutions created by the Iranian revolutionary government across Europe, which allows them deep purchase within Shi’ite Muslim populations on the Continent, as well as inroads with disaffected Sunnis and even European non-Muslims drawn to the language and posture of anti-Western radicalism. It is important to note that the criminal activities of the Iranian theocracy and its Hezbollah branch throughout Europe are not new. Some of this is ordinary criminality, from trafficking in contraband like weapons and drugs.2 Others are acts of terrorism, whether assassinations of dissidents or bombings, such as that in Burgas, Bulgaria, in 2012.3 Intelligence experts maintain that Hezbollah operatives are located in dozens of European states, including Belgium, Bosnia, Britain, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Lithuania, Norway, Romania, Russia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, and Ukraine.4 The Iranian radicalization infrastructure in Europe has been built assiduously over many decades.

    2 Race, Class, and Residence in the Chicago Ummah Ethnic Muslim Spaces and American Muslim Discourses The racial landscape of a city influences how close American Muslims have come to fulfilling the ummah ideals there. When I arrived in Chicago in the spring of 2002 to research Muslims in the city, two things stood out. One was the city’s diversity. Chicago was a nexus of global flows. Filled with people from all over the world—Bosnians, Mexicans, Nigerians, and Vietnamese—Chicago fit my idea of a global village. But alongside these global flows were major inequalities, particularly in the racially segregated housing, the second thing that stood out. Indeed, Chicago has always been known for its racist residential patterns and ethnic neighborhoods. “Germans settled on the North Side, Irish on the South Side, Jews on the West Side, Bohemians and Poles on the Near Southwest Side.”1 In the nineteenth century, European immigrants carved out ethnic lines across the city which, with the rise of black migration to Chicago in the 1920s, soon had viciously racist and economically devastating consequences. Fear and widespread propaganda created large-scale white resistance to African Americans. As whites maneuvered to keep blacks out of their neighborhoods and fled from the ones where blacks did settle, African Americans were confined to and concentrated in the South Side’s Black Belt. Business owners then moved from this expanding black area and invested their resources and profits elsewhere. As the community’s resources declined and the population grew, neighborhoods in the Black Belt steadily turned into overcrowded slums.2 Outside the South Side’s Black Belt, a flourishing metropolis took form, setting the stage for Chicago to become a major international city.

Some of his im- portant books are Gunahane Kabira, Qalbe Salīm, Mā’ad, Barzakh etc. His books cover various moral and ethical issues. The book Gunahane Kabira deals with Greater Sins. Ayatullah Dastg- haib has exhaustively explained the phenomenon of sin, the classification of sins, and the necessity of avoiding them. He has also described fifty different types of Greater Sins. Although the English translation is based on the Urdu Edition, I have relied upon the original Arabic text while translating traditions and Qur’anic verses. Since the English equivalents of Islamic terminology do not convey the exact meaning, I have used the Arabicterms. However those who are not conversant with Arabic words may refer to the Glossary of Islamic Terms.

Imam Al-Qurthubi, mengatakan bahwa kematian bukan ketiadaan sejati dan bukan pula ketiadaan yang sebenarnya, melainkan kematian adalah terputus dan terpisahnya keterkaitan jiwa/roh dengan badan serta terpisahnya kesatuan keduanya, pergantian keadaan, dan perpindahan suatu negeri ke negeri yang lain/ dari alam dunia kea lam akhirat.26 b. Asrifin an-Nakhrawie juga mendefenisikan kematian adalah merupakan suatu kepastian yang akan terjadi, yaitu sebuah rahasia yang tak satupun manusia di jagad raya ini yang bisa memastikan kapan dia harus mati dan dima dia akan menghadap sang ilahi rabbi.     Khomeinism Executive Summary: Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the country’s first supreme leader, is one of the most influential shapers of radical Islamic thought in the modern era. Khomeini’s Islamist, populist agenda—dubbed “Khomeinism” by scholar Ervand Abrahamian—has radicalized and guided Shiite Islamists both inside and outside Iran. Khomeini’s legacy has directly spawned or influenced major violent extremist organizations, including Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), as well as Lebanese-based terrorist organization and political party Hezbollah, and the more recently formed Iraqi-based Shiite militias, many of which stand accused of carrying out gross human rights violations. Khomeini popularized the Shiite Islamic concept of vilayat-e faqih—which translates to “guardianship of the Islamic jurist”— in order to place all of Iran’s religious and state institutions under the control of a single cleric. Khomeini’s successor, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, relies on Khomeinist ideals to continue his authoritarian domestic policies and support for terrorism abroad.     Sura 83: Al-Mutaffifin (The Defrauders) In the name of God, the Lord of Mercy, the Giver of Mercy Verses 1 to 36: 1. Woe to the defrauders; 2. Those who, when they have to receive a measure from people, they take it in full; 3. But when they give a measure or weight to people, they give less than what is due. 4. Do they think that they will not be raised again? 5. To a mighty Day, 6. The Day when (all) humankind will stand before the Lord of the Worlds? 7. No, indeed! The record of the wicked will be in Sijjin. 8. And what will explain to you what Sijjin is? 9. A written record. 10. Woe, that Day, to the deniers; 11. Those who deny the Day of Judgment. 12. And none can deny it except a transgressor, sinner. 13. Who, when Our revelation is recited to him, says, “Ancient fables.” 14. Verily, their hearts are covered by rust because of what they used to earn. 15. Verily, that Day they will be debarred from their Lord. 16. Then they will burn in Hell, 17. And it will be said (to them), “This is what you used to deny.” 18. Surely the record of the righteous shall be in the ‘Iliyin. 19. And what will explain to you what 'Illiyun is? 20. A written record. 21. Those who are drawn near (to God) shall witness it. 22. Truly the righteous will be in Bliss; 23. On couches, gazing. 24. You will recognize on their faces the radiance of bliss.
