Greater Sins” Has Been Completed in English
Chapter 1 Dedication Our sins strike him like arrows. When he examines the scrolls of our deeds, He weeps at our sins. We dedicate the book To this same Infallible Personality. May Allah hasten his Reappearance. 2 Chapter 2 Translator’s Preface In the Name of Allah, the Compassionate the Merciful Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds and benedictions upon the Messenger of Allah and his Purified Progeny (a.s.) By the Grace of the Almighty, the first volume of“Greater Sins” has been completed in English. The significance of Moral Science and Ethics is evident from the words of the Messenger of Allah (S) when he has described the aim of his ad- vent. He said, “I have been sent for perfecting the morals.” The learned Ālim, Ayatullah Dastghaib was one of the greatest Muallim-ul-akhlaq (Teacher of Moral Science). Some of his im- portant books are Gunahane Kabira, Qalbe Salīm, Mā’ad, Barzakh etc. His books cover various moral and ethical issues. The book Gunahane Kabira deals with Greater Sins. Ayatullah Dastg- haib has exhaustively explained the phenomenon of sin, the classification of sins, and the necessity of avoiding them. He has also described fifty different types of Greater Sins. Although the English translation is based on the Urdu Edition, I have relied upon the original Arabic text while translating traditions and Qur’anic verses. Since the English equivalents of Islamic terminology do not convey the exact meaning, I have used the Arabicterms. However those who are not conversant with Arabic words may refer to the Glossary of Islamic Terms. -

1 RESISTANCE MADE IN HOLLYWOOD: American Movies on Nazi Germany, 1939-1945 Mercer Brady Senior Honors Thesis in History University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Department of History Advisor: Prof. Karen Hagemann Co-Reader: Prof. Fitz Brundage Date: March 16, 2020 2 Acknowledgements I want to thank Dr. Karen Hagemann. I had not worked with Dr. Hagemann before this process; she took a chance on me by becoming my advisor. I thought that I would be unable to pursue an honors thesis. By being my advisor, she made this experience possible. Her interest and dedication to my work exceeded my expectations. My thesis greatly benefited from her input. Thank you, Dr. Hagemann, for your generosity with your time and genuine interest in this thesis and its success. Thank you to Dr. Fitz Brundage for his helpful comments and willingness to be my second reader. I would also like to thank Dr. Michelle King for her valuable suggestions and support throughout this process. I am very grateful for Dr. Hagemann and Dr. King. Thank you both for keeping me motivated and believing in my work. Thank you to my roommates, Julia Wunder, Waverly Leonard, and Jamie Antinori, for being so supportive. They understood when I could not be social and continued to be there for me. They saw more of the actual writing of this thesis than anyone else. Thank you for being great listeners and wonderful friends. Thank you also to my parents, Joe and Krista Brady, for their unwavering encouragement and trust in my judgment. I would also like to thank my sister, Mahlon Brady, for being willing to hear about subjects that are out of her sphere of interest. -

• 35 YE 21 AR 0 S 2 BERKSHIRE JEWISH FILM FESTIVAL 2021 marks the 35th anniversary of the Berkshire Jewish Film Festival. The brainchild of Dr. Zev Raviv, the festival was led by Margie Metzger for 30 years. For the first 20 years, the films were shown on a 16mm projector at Knesset Israel in either the Sanctuary or the Social Hall. At the very beginning, a crowd of 25 was considered a success. Amy Abramovich helped run the concession where people could buy ice cream and other goodies. Because it was (and still is) a fundraiser for the Knesset Israel Hebrew School, it was important to involve the students, and each year a contest was held to design the program cover. The tide turned with the screening of the documenta- ry, The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg. There was stand- ing room only and it was then that public perception of the film festival changed. And the rest is history! Over these past 35 years, the BJFF has shown hundreds of films to thousands of people. Last year with the pan- demic forcing us to close the theater doors, we were able to continue as a virtual festival showing films online and engaging our audience members with Zoom talkbacks. This year we are celebrating with a full seven weeks of programming. Including the five short films being shown on August 9th, we are offering eighteen films in total. Our films range from political documentaries and biographies to comedies, heartfelt family stories, and animation. We couldn’t run this festival without our loyal volunteers. -
Art and Terror in Daniel Silva's Spy Novel the Kill Artist
Journal of Literature and Art Studies, August 2020, Vol. 10, No. 8, 676-681 doi: 10.17265/2159-5836/2020.08.006 D DAVID PUBLISHING Art and Terror in Daniel Silva’s Spy Novel The Kill Artist Maria Antónia Lima University of Évora, Évora, Portugal; University of Lisbon Centre for English Studies, Lisbon, Portugal The importance of Daniel Silva’s past, close to a Portuguese cultural environment, will be relevant to understand the psychological profile of his popular protagonist and central character, Gabriel Allon, a melancholic man haunted by his past, but also someone who is a gifted art restorer, very sensitive to the values of loyalty and fidelity, which the author assumed to have inherited from his Portuguese family. Being a spy and an art expert, Allon seems to conciliate two contradictory sides of the human personality. The connection between Portuguese and American culture, in this writer’s background, could have been responsible for the creation of a character who can be, at the same time, very sensitive and very violent; an assassin who is an Israeli secret agent and the world’s finest restorer of the Old Masters’ paintings. A perfect double who does justice to his creator’s double origin, which contributed to the success of The Kill Artist (2000), where terror is practiced as one of the fine arts by a hero very loyal and faithful to his complex cultural origins, living in a diaspora as the eternal wandering Jew. Keywords: Daniel Silva, art; terror, spy novel With more than 50 thousand books sold in Portugal, the bestseller writer Daniel Silva, an American Jew educated and raised by a Portuguese catholic family from Azores, is nowadays among the best of the youngest American spy novelists in the rankings of The New York Times, The Washington Post, and other important American newspapers.
