Adolf Eichmann in Buenos Aires CAPTURING THE DEVIL The real story of the capture of Adolph Eichmann Based on the memoirs of Peter Zvi Malkin A feature film written and directed by Philippe Azoulay PITCH Peter Zvi Malkin, one of the best Israeli agents, is volunteering to be part of the commando set up to capture Adolf Eichmann in Buenos Aires. As the others, he wants to take revenge for the killing of his family, but the mission is to bring Eichmann alive so that he may be put on trial in Jerusalem. As Peter comes to consider his prisoner an ordinary and banal being he wants to understand the incomprehensible. To do so, he disobeys orders. During the confrontation between the soldier and his prisoner, a strange relationship develops… CAPTURING THE DEVIL HISTORICAL CONTEXT 1945 The Nuremberg trial is intended to clear the way to for the rebuilding of Western Europe Several Nazi hierarchs have managed to hide or escape Europe 1945 Adolph Eichmann who has organized the deportations and killings of millions of people is hiding in Europe. 1950 Eichmann is briefly detained in Germany but escapes to South America thanks to a Red Cross passport. In Europe and in Israel, Jews who survived the camps try to move into a new life. The young state of Israel fights for its survival throughout two wars in 1948 and 1956. The Nazi hunt is considered a “private“ matter. 1957 the Bavarian General Attorney Fritz Bauer, who has engaged into a second denazification of Germany’s elite, gets confirmation that Eichmann may be located in Argentina. He shares the information with the Israeli PM Ben Gourion and Isser Harel, the Head of State Security. Ben Gourion now sees the arrest of Eichmann as a “political” act. He asks Isser Harel to put a team to bring him to trial in Jerusalem. CAPTURING THE DEVIL AN EMBLEMATIC STORY • Eichmann has become one of the symbols of the monstrosity of the Nazi regime His trial has been a turning point in the understanding of the Shoah • There have been several accounts of Eichmann’s story: OPERATION EICHMANN (1961) by R.G. Springsteen THE HOUSE ON GARIBALDI STREET (1979) by Peter Collinson THE MAN WHO CAPTURED EICHMANN (1996) by William Graham THE SPECIALIST: PORTAIT OF A MODERN CRIMINAL (1999) by Eyal Sivan • Though a popular story, it has never been properly told from the point of view of the man who captured Eichmann, Peter Zvi Malkin. • Malkin’s family has empowered us to tell the story from Malkin’s point of view. We will be revealing operational details, never disclosed before. Rafi Eitan, the head of the commando has approved our script • “Capturing the Devil” will draw us into Malkin’s quest of meaning, the audience will share the dilemma that enveloped him and the members of the task force : Vengeance or Justice. A NECESSARY STORY With the rise of extremist movements in Europe and around the world and the necessity to educate younger generations, we believe that it is time to tell this story, which has never been properly told. Capturing the Devil is a spy thriller in the vein of “Argo” but it is also a fantastic testimony about human nature as was “Death and the Maiden” CAPTURING THE DEVIL THE DIRECTOR PHILIPPE AZOULAY SELECTIVE FILMOGRAPHY DOCUMENTARIES Shoot to Live Produced by Az you like films / Films 13. a feature doc exploring the intimate and creative journey of French helmer Claude Lelouch The Encounter 3 x 60 mn, documentary special. Produced by Rosebud Productions. Distributed by Pathé. Selected in various festivals. Won various awards. DIRECTOR’S VISION The camera and sound team will bring us to adopt Malkin’s point of view throughout the film: • For the first part of the story – the capture – a hand held camera, close to the action, conveying the danger and the confusion involved in the mission. • In Eichmann’s bedroom/cell, locked-up, time comes to a stop. As psychological confrontation begins, the camera steadies itself and the rhythm becomes slower but more intense. The sound work will stress this feeling of isolation and Malkin’s drawings will add an intimate, poetic touch. • Exteriors will be shot on location in Buenos Aires and Montevideo. • Actors will speak the languages spoken by the real protagonists: hebrew, english, spanish, german, yiddish Our film is about realism and integrity … so that we will sense the overbearing danger surrounding the characters, and their inner struggles. Actors mingle and clash in the best possible lighting, and conversation is fraught with wit and emotion. The director usually gets the bulk of the credit. But before he or she can play the consummate host, someone must carefully select the right guests, send out the invites, and keep track of the RSVPs”. ‘OSCARS: The Role Of Casting Director’ by Monica Corcoran Harel, The Deadline Team, December 6, 2012 Playing one of the key roles in creating that successful “dinner” is the Casting Director, but someone who is often over-looked in the recognition department. Everyone sees the actor at work, but very few people see the hours of research, the intrinsic skills, the gut instinct that the Casting Director puts into finding just the right person for just the right role. It’s a mix of routine and inspiration which brings the characters we come to love, and sometimes to hate, to the big screen. The Casting Director’s delicate work as liaison between director, actors, their agent/manager and the studio/network figures prominently in decisions which can make or break a project. It’s a job that can't garner an Oscar, but its mighty importance is always felt behind the scenes. In July 2013, the Academy of Motion Pictures of Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) created a new branch for Casting Directors, and we are thrilled that a number of members of the International Casting Directors Network are amongst the first Casting Directors invited into the Academy.

  • Sight & Sound Films of 2007
Sight & Sound Films of 2007 Each year we ask a selection of our contributors - reviewers and critics from around the world - for their five films of the year. It's a very loosely policed subjective selection, based on films the writer has seen and enjoyed that year, and we don't deny them the choice of films that haven't yet reached the UK. And we don't give them much time to ponder, either - just about a week. So below you'll find the familiar and the obscure, the new and the old. From this we put together the top ten you see here. What distinguishes this particular list is that it's been drawn up from one of the best years for all-round quality I can remember. 2007 has seen some extraordinary films. So all of the films in the ten are must-sees and so are many more. Enjoy. - Nick James, Editor. 1 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days (Cristian Mungiu) 2 Inland Empire (David Lynch) 3 Zodiac (David Fincher) = 4 I’m Not There (Todd Haynes) The Lives of Others (Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck) 6 Silent Light (Carlos Reygadas) = 7 The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (Andrew Dominik) Syndromes and a Century (Apichatpong Weerasethakul) No Country for Old Men (Ethan and Joel Coen) Eastern Promises (David Cronenberg) 1 Table of Contents – alphabetical by critic Gilbert Adair (Critic and author, UK)............................................................................................4 Kaleem Aftab (Critic, The Independent, UK)...............................................................................4 Geoff Andrew (Critic

THE MOSAIC MONTHLY ESSAY • EPISODE 2 June: The Truth of the Capture of Adolf Eichmann 1x 00:00|60:58 Sixty years ago last month, on the evening of May 23, 1960, the Israeli prime minister David Ben-Gurion made a brief but dramatic announcement to a hastily-summoned session of the Knesset in Jerusalem: A short time ago, Israeli security services found one of the greatest of the Nazi war criminals, Adolf Eichmann, who was responsible, together with the Nazi leaders, for what they called “the final solution” of the Jewish question, that is, the extermination of six million of the Jews of Europe. Eichmann is already under arrest in Israel and will shortly be placed on trial in Israel under the terms of the law for the trial of Nazis and their collaborators. In the cabinet meeting immediately preceding this announcement, Ben-Gurion’s ministers had expressed their astonishment and curiosity.

  • FILMS on Palestine-Israel By
PALESTINE-ISRAEL FILMS ON THE HISTORY of the PALESTINE-ISRAEL CONFLICT compiled with brief introduction and commentary by Rosalyn Baxandall A publication of the Palestine-Israel Working Group of Historians Against the War (HAW) December 2014 www.historiansagainstwar.org Licensed under Creative Commons Attribution – NonCommercial – ShareAlike 1 Introduction This compilation of films that relate to the Palestinian-Israeli struggle was made in July 2014. The films are many and the project is ongoing. Why film? Film is often an extraordinarily effective tool. I found that many students in my classes seemed more visually literate than print literate. Whenever I showed a film, they would remember the minute details, characters names and sub-plots. Films were accessible and immediate. Almost the whole class would participate and debates about the film’s meaning were lively. Film showings also improved attendance at teach-ins. At the Truro, Massachusetts, Library in July 2014, the film Voices Across the Divide was shown to the biggest audiences the library has ever had, even though the Wellfleet Library and several churches had refused to allow the film to be shown. Organizing is also important. When a film is controversial, as many in this pamphlet are, a thorough organizing effort including media coverage will augment the turnout for the film. Many Jewish and Palestinian groups list films in their resources. This pamphlet lists them alphabetically, and then by number under themes and categories; the main listings include summaries, to make the films more accessible and easier to use by activist and academic groups. 2 1. 5 Broken Cameras, 2012.

JULIAN SCHNABEL CHILDHOOD AND OTHER GRAPHIC WORKS September 14 – November 11, 2017 Opening: September 13 | 6 – 9 pm Circle Culture | Gipsstraße 11 | 10119 Berlin Reception at Hotel de Rome with acoustic live music by Frida Gold: September 15 | 5 – 7 pm Hotel de Rome | Behrenstraße 37 | 10117 Berlin Childhood (4), 2016, carbon print on etching paper, 80 x 57 cm On the occasion of this year’s Berlin Art Week, Circle Culture is delighted to present graphic works by American artist and filmmaker Julian Schnabel. The two-part exhibition will be on display at Circle Culture, Gipsstraße 11 and at Hotel de Rome, and will be opening on two evenings. This first exhibition of the gallery with Julian Schnabel also marks the return of Circle Culture to its place of origin in Berlin-Mitte. This place will be revitalized as a main location for exhibitions, round tables and cultural projects in a wide spectrum. Graphic works represent an impressive compendium within the oeuvre of Julian Schnabel, which he continues with the current works for the first time after 18 years. As in his paintings, they reflect the diversity and intrinsic creative urge of the artist, who constantly applies surprising printing techniques and materials. Characteristic for Julian Schnabel‘s expressionist work is the free experimentation with different materials, techniques and also citations. His complex overpaintings are characterized by associative, encyclopedic- seeming visual worlds, which Schnabel borrows and alienates artistically. The results are intertextual embed- ded works of art with a deliberately open character. Often they tell about the hidden, the fragmentary yet seemingly all-connected, while moving along an emotional and irrational level with an expressive intensity.

  • Blooms Hilton Als
Blooms Hilton Als Taken together, Julian Schnabel’s canvases are a garden illuminated by perception, which is all Gertrude Stein’s “Rose is a rose is a rose is a rose” was about—how we look at what we look at, how to make seeing into words. Schnabel’s masterly Rose Paintings series, exe- cuted in 2015–17, are blooms that will never die on the vine, let alone the vine of thought. The works are a description of the ephemeral—flowers as forces in nature that expire to blossom again. By using materials meant to last—oil, paint, Bondo on wood—Schnabel creates concrete forms out of that which is meant to return to the ground. In these works, he excavates flowers, those captives of time that die with time, and makes them timeless, in pictures that draw on nature to make of it what the artist will—and does. Schnabel makes paintings that are illustrative of his nature. The artist first attracted widespread attention more than three decades ago for work that was unlike anything else, because the Brooklyn-born Schnabel’s point of view has always been unlike anyone else’s. His eye is a rose. In paintings ranging from Self Portrait in Andy’s Shadow (1987) to the Untitled (Chinese Paintings) series (initiated in 2003), the creator worked in a tradition that could not be readily identified because it was his own, an out- growth of his soul. Like flowers that cannot be classified, the Rose paintings come at you from different angles. One painting looks at the roses a little from the left, some are more centered—all of which goes to show how one’s view of a thing can change the thing being observed; our percep- tions change paintings, just as paint changes blank canvas.

Shpiro THE PUBLIC trial in Israel of Adolf Eichmann, the man who directed the Third Reich’s ‘Final Solution’, was held in 1961 under an unprecedented publicity coverage. The trial, which took place in Jerusalem, attracted hundreds of reporters and media crews from all over the world. For the first time since the end of the Second World War the horrific crimes of the Nazi regime against the Jewish people were exposed in all their brutality by one of their leading perpetrators. Eichmann stood at the top of the Gestapo pyramid dedicated to the destruction of Europe’s Jewry, and was personally responsible not only for policy decisions but for the everyday running of this unparalleled genocide. His trial and subsequent execution brought to millions of homes around the world the untold story of the Holocaust from its chief administrator. (I-1) The Eichmann trial had a profound influence in particular on the young generation of Israeli citizens, born after the end of the Second World War. This generation, born into a country which had built itself as a national home for the Jewish people in order to prevent such persecution in the future, swore as it joined the army ‘never again’ to let Jewish people be led to their death unresisting.

Miral by Rula Jebreal Published by Penguin Books, 2010, 309 pages Reviewed by: Loni Crowe ([email protected]), Coordinator of Orientation and Family Programs, First Year Programs, Eastern Kentucky University Overview Miral takes the reader on a journey spanning nearly five decades, beginning with the establishment of the Dar El-Tifel orphanage and up through the founder, Hind Husseini’s, death in 1994. Set primarily in Jerusalem, the book sheds light on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict as it explores the experiences of the characters through the period of the First Intifada. While the biographical components of the story of Hind Husseini are true, the author draws from her own life experiences. The story begins decades prior to Miral’s birth, and the reader follows her development and growth into a young woman during the 1980s. Even though the story may start out slowly and be challenging to engage with initially, as the book progresses, the pace also picks up and becomes a much faster read. While this coming-of-age story highlights the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and contains political undertones, it also communicates the importance of education and educational opportunity, philanthropic work and servant leadership, and compassion and selflessness in the name of a cause. Intertwined stories paint a picture from multiple perspectives from within the world in which Miral was raised. These narratives and interconnected characters and sub-plots essentially turn the faceless masses of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict into identifiable and relatable characters caught in the religious and political upheavals of their homeland. The author has structured the experiences of the main characters within the context of five primary parts: Hind, Nadia, Fatima, Miral, and Hani.
