EDITORIAL Another year has come and gone, and we trust that 1989 will be a happy and prosperous one for all our members. If our Society is to continue to flourish, however, it is essential that more members should play an active part in running its affairs. Ken Brown, our Secretary since 1983 (and acting Programme Organiser for the last year), is resigning at the Annual General Meeting in May, and Irene Blackburn, who is responsible for the Members' Interests and Second Time Around sections of the Journal, will be giving up her position as Research Editor later in the year. We are very grateful to them both for all the work they have done on our behalf. In addition to these two posts, we are still short of a Programme Organiser. If you know of anyone who might be willing to take on any of these jobs please let Ken Brown know as soon as possible - otherwise the Society may come to a grinding halt. One of the most important events of 1988 as far as the Society was concerned was the publication of the long-awaited Directory of Members' Interests. Its production entailed a great deal of hard work on the part of those responsible, and it also placed a severe strain on the Society's finances. In view of the fact that it was initially offered free to members (only the cost of postage and packing being charged), the demand for copies was disappointingly small. Copies are still available, and although now priced £2.75 each (post free to addresses in the U.K.), they are very good value.

  • Ethnicity in the North East an Overview
EthnicityNORTH EAST Ethnicity in the North East an overview NORTH EAST ASSEMBLY THE VOICE FOR THE REGION Ethnicity in the Acknowledgements North East I would like to acknowledge the help and guidance received from everyone I have contacted while compiling this guidance. I am particularly indebted to the staff of the Home Office Drugs Prevention Advisory Service, particularly Robert Martin Government Office for the North East and Deborah Burns and Karen Kirkbride, for their continuous support, advice and encouragement. Veena Soni Diversity Advisor Drugs Prevention Advisory Service 1 Ethnicity in the Foreword by Angela Eagle North East The Home Office has committed itself to promoting race equality, particularly in the provision of public services such as education, health, law and order, housing and local government; and achieve representative workforces in its services areas. We are also working hard to promote cohesive communities and deal with the issues that cause segregation in communities. One of the Home OfficeÕs seven main aims is to support strong and active communities in which people of all races and backgrounds are valued and participate on equal terms by developing social policy to build a fair, prosperous and cohesive society in which everyone has a stake. To work with other departments and local government agencies and community groups to regenerate neighbourhoods, to support families; to develop the potential of every individual; to build the confidence and capacity of the whole community to be part of the solution; and to promote good race and community relations, combating prejudice and xenophobia. To promote equal opportunities both within the Home Office and more widely and to ensure that active citizenship contributes to the enhancement of democracy and the development of civil society.

IJroceeciings OF THE Wesley Historical Society Editor.' E. ALAN ROSE, BA. Volume XLIV December 1983 The Wesltry Historical Society Lecture, 1983 PIETY, PROFIT AND PATERNALISM Methodists in Business in the North-East of England, c. 1760-1920 [The choice of this subject was prompted in part by an invitation to take part in the seminar on " Christianity and Business" held in March 1982 at the Business History Unit of the London School of Economics. I am grateful to Dr. David Jeremy for that invitation, and for making it possible for me subsequently to see several typescript entries for the forthcoming Dictionary of Business Biography (of which he is joint editor). Other acknowledgements and thanks go to the following: Mr. W. R. Irving, Mr. W. Hodge, Mr.J. C. Watson, the Rev. Bernard W. Blanchard, the Rev. John A. Beardsley, Mr. R. Brown and Dr. Joyce Bellamy, for help with Hull businessmen; Mrs. Olga Reckitt of Bridlington ; Professor W. R. Ward of Durham University; the late Mr. Kirtland Hinton of Hintons Ltd. of Thornaby ; Mr. and Mrs. E. Willits of Middlesbrough; Mrs . .J. Dodds of Eaglesdiffe; a number of friends and colleagues in Sunderland; the staffs of various libraries and record offices in Hull, York, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Stockton, Sunderland, South Shields, Durham, Gateshead, Newcastle, and theJohn Rylands University Library of Manchester; the editor of the Methodist Recorder. Some of the re search costs were met by Sunderland Polytechnic. Footnotes to the text have been kept to a minimum in view of the fact that references are given for each of the biographical entries in the Appendix.-G.E.M.] MONG some items of Wesleyana which came to me recently was a copy of a little Wesleyan diary for the year 1813.

  • Care That Makes You Feel at Home
Newcastle upon Tyne Care that makes you feel at home www.abbeyieldnewcastle.org.uk Abbeyield is a place where you can enjoy your later years, enjoy making new friendships and receive exceptional levels of care. Our ethos is built on the belief that happiness can be found through community, and that loneliness need not be an inevitable feature of old age. Abbeyield Newcastle offers the best of both worlds; we are a small, not-for-proit charity with four houses around the city which allows us to provide a personal service to meet the individual needs of all our residents. We are afiliated to the Abbeyield Society, an international not-for-proit organisation, giving us the security and beneits from being part of a large, stable organisation. Our Homes Abbeyield Newcastle has followed in the footsteps of its founder and has also had the generous support of local philanthropists and Community and Friendship volunteers. We run two care homes and two supported sheltered living residences across at its core. Fenham and Gosforth offering full time and respite care. From our stunning detached house at Thorney Close in Fenham housing six residents to the thirty-two bedrooms of The Grove, a former private residence of a wealthy sea merchant, we offer real choice when it comes to size of home The History of Abbeyield and style of living. Upon leaving the Army in 1956 Richard Our two care homes have full wheelchair access, laundry services, freshly Carr-Gomm, was deeply saddened at the prepared meals and a broad range of activities chosen by our residents as well loneliness and isolation he saw amongst as round the clock care from our team of professional staff.
