When asked for clarifi cation, Mr. Pisharody explained that Tata’s new Nano (a $2500 60 MPG “People’s Car”) will allow its owners to drive reliably for pennies per mile; Jaguar will allow its owners to R ride reliably in quiet splendor; and Land Rover will allow its owners to reli- ably climb 45-degree inclines. The company needed a model line that would keep its service technicians employed, and Alfa Romeo more than fi lled the bill. e Mr. Pisharody also alleviated concerns that some devoted Alfa Romeo fans (known as “Alfi sti”) had expressed regarding the brand’s identity, stylishness, and l performance. Naturally, with any change in ownership, some differences are in- e evitable, but Tata plans to minimize their impact. The changes currently being implemented include: • Since “Alfa Romeo” is unpronounceable in Hindi, the marque’s name will be a changed to Alwar Rampur, the enchanting city in royal Rajasthan where pro- duction will take place. Alwar Rampur is famous for its forts and palaces, s tie-dyed clothing called Bandhini, hand-woven saris, and marble sculptures. Hence, the aura of style and passion will be retained, and the change from “Alfa Romeo” to “Alwar Rampur” in all of the company’s products, logos, and e literature will be visually imperceptible to the public. • Because of the esteem in which bovines are held in India, Alwar Rampurs will, of course, no longer be manufactured with leather seating. Instead, cus- tomers will be given several material options, primarily colorful tie-dyed Bandhini and plaid-like Madras (which should be popular demographically, since so many current and potential owners of the marque came of age in the ‘60s and ‘70s). It’s unclear whether the material will be sewn onto the Alwars’ seats or draped around them, sari-style. • In conjunction with the above, the anti- quated “Cross and Serpent” emblem will Alfa Romeo be replaced by the exciting new “Cow and “ Cross”, and will henceforth be used on emblems and in company literature. • Service on new Alwar Rampurs will no under new longer be performed by local dealer- ships. Instead, customers will be asked to call a special Toll-free Engineer- ing and Technical Support (TEATS) number, ownership where they’ll be connected after navigat- ing through a few levels of voice mail to a specialist at the Tata Tech Support facility in Bangalore. This enhance- ment will improve customer satisfaction as of from the level experienced by current Alfa Romeo owners to that experienced by all personal computer users over the past several years. April 1st ### EDITOR’S NOTE: In recognition of and respect for the transition to new ownership, our newsletter’s name will henceforth be changed from Velocissima to Jalipranaya (“love of speed” in Hindi), and our club’s logo correspondingly modified, commencing with the current issue (see front cover). ” AAlfalfa OOwnerswners ooff NNewew EEnglandngland 3 TThehe AAONEONE CCalendaralendar s ooff UUpcomingpcoming EEventsvents t WHEN WHAT WHERE WHO April n 19 – Sat 10am AONE South Shore Beach & Waterfront Tour Hingham, MA Tom Lesko 26 – Sat 10:30am Mohawk Country Drive and Garage Tour Westfi eld, MA Jeff Greenfi eld e May 17 – Sat all day New Hampshire Vintage Celebration Loudon, NH Stephan de Pénasse 18 – Sun 9am Jag Club Spring Slalom (autocross - Alfas invited) Westford, MA v June 15-22 AROC National Convention Chicago, IL E 21 – Sat* AONE North Shore Tour Beverly, MA Walker/Ducibella July 12 – Sat* Collings Foundation Lunch and Tour Stow, MA Jim Miga t ??? FULL DESIGN MADE IN ITALY ITALIAN STYLE APPRECIATED WORLDWIDE “In every project, creativity must always be measured alongside feasibility” Aldo Cingolani IL MAESTRO For his influence and outstanding contribution to the design and the car industry Nuccio Bertone was inducted in the Automotive Hall of fame in 2006 in Detroit, taking his place alongside other automotive icons, including Henry Ford, Giovanni Agnelli, Louis Renault and the Michelin brothers. The acclaimed automotive historian Fulvio Cinti described him as “one of the greatest coachbuilders of the century, and International Maestro of Italian Style” A GREAT HISTORY Founded in 1912, Bertone is one of the oldest and most prestigious «made in Italy» firms in the sector of automobiles, and has accompanied the automotive industry’s technological and stylistic evolution during the first century of its existence. From its creation to the 1930s, Bertone aroused the enthusiasm of a demanding public of collectors and gentleman drivers with its « Fuori Serie » cars. Under the guidance of Nuccio, the founder’s son, Bertone entered the 1960s with great success, riding the wave of the Italian economical boom and developing cars that would enter history as a result of highly skilled tailoring and leading edge technology. The Lamborghini Miura (1966) became a symbol of success worldwide. Followed by the Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint (1953), Stratos Zero (1970), Lamborghini Countach (1971) and more recently by Jaguar, Ferrari, Aston Martin and BWM, all had the unique Bertone signature that made their success. For me, that alone was reason enough to do this project – filling in the gaps and completing BMW’s history.” Since the early days of the brand, BMW has been inspired and influenced by Italian design and coachbuilding culture.

  • Grand Basel Celebrates Giorgetto Giugiaro at 80
Press Release Basel, September 4, 2018 Grand Basel celebrates Giorgetto Giugiaro at 80 This year marks the 80th birthday of Giorgetto Giugiaro, a legendary personality who was named 'Car Designer of the Century' at the turn of the millennium, by a jury of more than 130 journalists. His vast achievements in automotive design include partnerships with nearly every major automotive manufacturer. At the debut Grand Basel show in Basel, some of the cars he designed have been assembled as a tribute to his lifetime of work. Giugiaro found his passion in art and design at an early age, and in 1952 he was selected for an apprenticeship by Fiat's chief engineer, Dante Giacosa. By 1955, Giugiaro had progressed from apprentice to employee, working at Fiat's design centre in Mirafiori, Turin. By the end of the decade he would be working for Nuccio Bertone, with whom his first car would come to fruition – the Type 102 Alfa Romeo 2000 (later 2600) Sprint. A classically elegant two-door coupe, the design paved the way for the legendary Type 105 and 115 "Bertone GT" models that would follow several years later. Thereafter, the partnership of Bertone and Giugiaro produced an incredible series of landmark designs: the Aston Martin DB4 GT Jet Concept, Chevrolet Corvair Testudo, BMW 3200 CS and the Fiat 850 Spider. He also designed bespoke versions of the Ferrari 250 GT SWB, one of which was Nuccio's personal car, and which sold at auction in 2015 for $16.5 million. At Ghia, his next employer, he would create designs for the De Tomaso Mangusta and Maserati Ghibli.

  • BAT 11 Press Release 3, 2008-Pdf
Press release 2/2008 2nd March 2008 FROM THE B.A.T. 5 TO THE B.A.T. 11 A sport-car inspired by the past The B.A.T.11 designed by Stile Bertone brings back memories of an episode that marked the car sector in the Fifties and that has evolved up to the present day, indulging a passion for the car mixed with vicissitudes of personal fortune. B.A.T.: a compendium of aerodynamics and technique. Let us take a step back in time. 50 years ago Nuccio Bertone and designer Franco Scaglione produced a number of precious car designs, joining creativity, innovation, good taste and a touch of eccentricity. In 1952 they pretty much amazed more or less everybody with a prototype for the spider Arnolt Bristol (the car went into production in 1954) and with the Abarth 1500. Aerodynamics and sinuous lines were the striking features of both cars. During the same year they designed the Giulietta Spring 1300. The car was launched at the Turin Auto Show in 1954 and was a great success from the start. This long-lasting success almost “stole the scene” from an elegant family of prototype cars that were built upon the Alfa Romeo 1900 Sprint chassis: the B.A.T. 5 (1953), the B.A.T. 7 (1954) and the B.A.T. 9 (1955). The state-of-the-art, futuristic design of all three sports cars was clearly based on the Abarth 1500, where research into more performance-oriented aerodynamics resulted in Scaglione’s unparalleled original and challenging design achievements.
