  • Full Design Made in Italy
FULL DESIGN MADE IN ITALY ITALIAN STYLE APPRECIATED WORLDWIDE “In every project, creativity must always be measured alongside feasibility” Aldo Cingolani IL MAESTRO For his influence and outstanding contribution to the design and the car industry Nuccio Bertone was inducted in the Automotive Hall of fame in 2006 in Detroit, taking his place alongside other automotive icons, including Henry Ford, Giovanni Agnelli, Louis Renault and the Michelin brothers. The acclaimed automotive historian Fulvio Cinti described him as “one of the greatest coachbuilders of the century, and International Maestro of Italian Style” A GREAT HISTORY Founded in 1912, Bertone is one of the oldest and most prestigious «made in Italy» firms in the sector of automobiles, and has accompanied the automotive industry’s technological and stylistic evolution during the first century of its existence. From its creation to the 1930s, Bertone aroused the enthusiasm of a demanding public of collectors and gentleman drivers with its « Fuori Serie » cars. Under the guidance of Nuccio, the founder’s son, Bertone entered the 1960s with great success, riding the wave of the Italian economical boom and developing cars that would enter history as a result of highly skilled tailoring and leading edge technology. The Lamborghini Miura (1966) became a symbol of success worldwide. Followed by the Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint (1953), Stratos Zero (1970), Lamborghini Countach (1971) and more recently by Jaguar, Ferrari, Aston Martin and BWM, all had the unique Bertone signature that made their success. LUISS TEACHING CASES Brand Development through Brand Extension and Licensing: Pininfarina Extra Marco Francesco Mazzù Luiss Guido Carli In collaboration with Pininfarina Management TEACHING CASES 2020 ISBN 978-88-6105-533-9 Introduction Year 2012 started as a key defining moment for Pininfarina Group and its future. In the eyes of the management team, the last five years have been full of hitches. A lot of personal energies have been dedicated to guide the organization through a set of diverse and serious challenges: years between 2007 and 2011 were characterized by the Global crisis of the Automotive sector, main historical focus of the group; some investments in partnership with major OEM did not reach the expected pay-off; the group has been forced to rethink its historical focus of activities, and, even more important, the dramatic death of Andrea in 2008, CEO of the Group at that time, forced an unexpected and unplanned change in leadership an internal governance, including the entrance of the first external members to Pininfarina’s family in top management position. Despite con- tinuing to succeed with its image in the market, as testified by winning several international “best designer” awards1, a strong bank intervention has been needed to guarantee company con- tinuity, and sales were not coping up with the expected level to support future growth. In addition, some of the core activities have been divested. It has been clear to the management, that the historical company focus, and the Automotive mar- ket was not anymore enough to support a healthy outlook. Something more should also be done to develop other “internal jewels” of the company as Pininfarina Extra (PFE), founded in 1986, and focused on bringing the company’s design culture and comprehension of modern life, culture and social paradigms to other categories of industrial design.

Each month is dedicated to a different theme. In June, special attention is paid to new production technologies and materials. The thematic month opened with the «ItalDesign Days in Russia,» launched at the Technopolis site of Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University. Italdesign-Giugiaro s.p.a. was founded in Turin in 1968 by Giorgetto Giugiaro, an Italian car designer who was awarded the «Car Designer of the Century» award in 1999 and included in the Automotive Hall of Fame (USA). Today, the bureau is part of the Volkswagen concern. The company has gained a worldwide reputation for its design projects for Audi, BMW, Fiat, Lamborghini, Lotus, Maserati, Renault, Saab, Volkswagen, Volvo, Nissan, and other major players in the automotive industry. Today, the company offers a wide range of engineering services — from industrial design to prototype production and IT solution development. On June 1, leading experts and managers of the world-famous Italian engineering company, the leader of industrial design in the global automotive industry, first gave public lectures in St. Petersburg and participated in joint round tables with their Russian colleagues, the Polytechnic.
