  • The Decline and Fall of the Pirates Family
Chapter One The Decline and Fall of the Pirates Family The 1980–1985 Seasons ♦◊♦ As over forty-four thousand Pirates fans headed to Three Rivers Sta- dium for the home opener of the 1980 season, they had every reason to feel optimistic about the Pirates and Pittsburgh sports in general. In the 1970s, their Pirates had captured six divisional titles, two National League pennants, and two World Series championships. Their Steelers, after decades of futility, had won four Super Bowls in the 1970s, while the University of Pittsburgh Panthers led by Heisman Trophy winner Tony Dorsett added to the excitement by winning a collegiate national championship in football. There was no reason for Pittsburgh sports fans to doubt that the 1980s would bring even more titles to the City of Champions. After the “We Are Family” Pirates, led by Willie Stargell, won the 1979 World Series, the ballclub’s goals for 1980 were “Two in a Row and Two Million Fans.”1 If the Pirates repeated as World Series champions, it would mark the first time that a Pirates team had accomplished that feat in franchise history. If two million fans came out to Three Rivers Stadium to see the Pirates win back-to-back World Series titles, it would 3 © 2017 University of Pittsburgh Press. The offseason after the 1979 World Series victory was a whirlwind of awards and honors, highlighted by World Series Most Valuable Player (MVP) Willie Stargell and Super Bowl MVP Terry Bradshaw of the Steelers appearing on the cover of the December 24, 1979, Sports Illustrated as corecipients of the magazine’s Sportsman of the Year Award.

12/15/2015 RICHIE HEBNER; ; THE MAN IS FULL OF LIFE - AND SO IS HIS HOT BAT - The Boston Globe Archives RICHIE HEBNER; ; THE MAN IS FULL OF LIFE - AND SO IS HIS HOT BAT [FIRST Edition] Boston Globe (pre-1997 Fulltext) - Boston, Mass. Author: Steve Marantz Globe Staff Date: Jul 13, 1980 Start Page: 1 Section: SPORTS Document Text Richie Hebner, who digs graves in the winter, plays baseball in Detroit in the summer. People who spend time in cemeteries and Detroit are either dead or contemplating death, but Hebner had 25 RBIs in the 20 games before the All- Star break. If that is dead, the Red Sox had better start scouting cadavers. As a matter of fact Richie Hebner is very much alive and enjoying himself, which is his nature. A great hockey fan, Hebner once showed up at a Bruins practice at the Spectrum during the playoffs. Next day, Don Cherry was wearing a Phillies hat in practice. The final word on Hebner's irrepressibility is that he has found the lighter side of Detroit. His story began when the Tigers closed their right- field bleacher section in June due to unruly fans. "They reopened the bleachers and started checking everybody at the gate," said Hebner. "One guy shows up in a wheelchair with a blanket over his legs. They checked under the blanket and found a case of beer. They told him he couldn't take it in Tiger Stadium. "The guy said, Well I can't get around like other people. I'm not gonna bother nobody.' "They said, You can't do it,' so the guy gets off his wheelchair, says To hell with you,' and walks off with the beer." Hebner's laughter caught the wind over Mud Pond Wednesday, the last day of the All-Star break.

UNIVERSITY LIBRARY 11 ABSTRACT From the very early days of radio broadcasting, the descriptions of major league baseball games have been among the more popular types of programs. The relationship between the ball clubs and broadcast stations has developed through experimentation, skepticism, and eventual acceptance. The broadcasts have become financially important to the teams as well as the advertisers and stations. The central person responsible for pleasing the fans as well as satisfying the economic goals of the stations, advertisers, and teams—the principal play- by-play announcer—had not been the subject of intensive study. Contentions were made in the available literature about his objectivity, partiality, and the influence exerted on his description of the games by outside parties. To test these contentions, and to learn more about the overall atmosphere in which this focal person worked, a study was conducted of principal play-by-play announcers who broadcasted games on a day-to-day basis, covering one team for a local audience. With the assistance of some of the announcers, a survey was prepared and distributed to both announcers who were employed in the play-by-play capacity during the 1975 season and those who had been involved in the occupation in past seasons.
