Dundee Precious Metals response regarding concerns about contamination of rural land areas with waste from Kapan combine (Armenia) 4 March 2011 Business & Human Rights Resource Centre invited Deno Gold Mining (part of Dundee Precious Metals) to respond to the following item: - “Tailing dump in Norashenik contaminates surrounding community land areas”, EcoLur Network, 18 Feb 2011 - http://www.ecolur.org/en/news/2011-02-18/2060/ In response, Dundee Precious Metals sent the following statement: §¸ի ն ո ¶ոլդ Øայնինգ øամփնի¦ ö´À §Deno Gold Mining Company¦ CJSC ЗАО «Äино Голд Ìайнинг Компани՚ ÐÐ,êÛáõÝÇùÇ Ù³ñ½ ù.γå³Ý,¶áñͳñ³Ý³ÛÇÝ 4,3301 . Waters filtered from the tailing dump are filled into the Norashenik River, and its water is used to irrigate the land areas in Syunik Village, Zangelan and other communities. That’s why the residents complain rural land areas are polluted with mining, particularly with wastes from Kapan combine. 80 ha have been considered useless for cultivation, while using other 330 ha of plough land is senseless because of extreme pollution and low productivity. Deno comments in response to the Ecolur Article History of the tailings dam in Norashenik area The Artsvanik Tailings dam is the only operating facility in Norashenik and belongs to the Kajaran molybdenum mine. A small portion of that dam was rented by DGMC in 2005 to be temporarily used for TMF purposes until the completion of the Geghanush TMF expansion project. In terms of area and impact it is about 0.4% of the total Kajaran TMF. The area leased is currently closed and in the last stages of recultivation and rehabilitation. This is being carried out by DGMC and has minimal influence, if any on adjacent rivers. According to Permit N 057, dated 28.04.08, DGMC CJSC has 4 permitted discharge points into the Norashenik River: discharge point N 3 (waters from adits 4,5,6); discharge point N 4 (cleaned (filtered) waters from Tejadeen section); discharge point N 5 (waste waters from adits N 2, 5); discharge point N 6 (mixture of production and housekeeping waters). Starting 2008 DGMC undertook the program of reducing the impact on the environment from the permitted discharge points by returning these flows into the mill system. 2008 Discharge point N4 was directed to the reclaim/reverse water system 2009 Discharge point N 6 was directed to the reclaim/reverse water system. 2010 Discharge point N 3 was directed to the reclaim/reverse water system. 2011 January, discharge point N 5 was directed into the reclaim/reverse water system. At this time DGMC does not have a main discharge point to the Norashenik River. Deno Gold mining’s environmental group together with the regional environmental inspectorate does monthly audits and testing of all the discharges, including sampling and tests (quality/quantity). As per the results of the tests, no excess in MPD-s have been found The history of mining in Kapan dates back to 19th century. Mining has had an impact on the environment for almost two ages. In DGMC’s time in the Kapan region it has remained committed to environmentally sound mining practices. .
