“THE BLACK VIRUS” By Giorgio Mottola Consultant Andrea Palladino With the contribution of Norma Ferrara – Simona Peluso Video by Dario D’India – Alfredo Farina Video by Davide Fonda – Tommaso Javidi Editing and graphics by Giorgio Vallati GIORGIO MOTTOLA OFF CAMERA How a video by the news show TGR Leonardo went viral is a rather unusual story. It was extremely difficult to find on search engines. So, for five years the story remained buried in the RAI website's archive – until last month, it had zero views. SIGFRIDO RANUCCI IN THE STUDIO This video appeared on social media and on our mobile phones while we were at home in lockdown, somewhat nettled by the long, enforced quarantine. It was an old TGR Leonardo report, showing Chinese reporters in a lab, experimenting on a strain of coronavirus. And we all shared the same suspicion. The SARS-CoV-2 strain is manmade, the poisoned fruit of Chinese researchers. We all posted it on our profiles, including me, though I pointed out that scientists had excluded any human intervention and that the video was spreading quicker than coronavirus. Who pushed it so far? Who made it go viral? With what intent? And, above all, was it real or fake news? There's a fine line there. GIORGIO MOTTOLA OFF CAMERA If you have a social network profile or just use WhatsApp, while locked away at home you will certainly have seen this video. TGR LEONARDO – FROM 16/11/2015 It's an experiment, sure, but it's worrying. It worries many scientists. A team of Chinese researchers inserts a protein taken from bats into a SARS virus strain, or acute pneumonia, obtained from mice.

Suburra o las entrañas de Roma Luigi CARMELITANO Título: Suburra Director: Stefano Sollima Guión: Giancarlo De Cataldo, Carlo Bonini, Stefano Rulli y Sandro Petraglia. Intérpretes: Pierfrancesco Favino, Greta Scarano, Elio Germano, Claudio Amendola, Alessandro Borghi, Jean-Hugues Anglade.

From 2016 to 2019 he was a member of a SIR research group, studying Italian film criticism in post-war cultural and popular magazines. From 2017 he has been a Research Assistant at the Department of Humanities, Social and Cultural Enterprises (DUSIC) of the University of Parma. Abstract In recent years, the city of Rome continues to be ‘read’ by Italian cinema as a privileged habitat for the setting of crime narratives. Some emblematic examples are such recent Italian films as Suburra (Id., Stefano Sollima, 2015), Lo chiamavano Jeeg Robot (They Call Me Jeeg, Gabriele Mainetti, 2015), Non essere cattivo (Don’t Be Bad, Clau- dio Caligari, 2015) and Dogman (Id., Matteo Garrone, 2018), which offer the opportunity to explore the creative processes behind the adaptation of successful cross over into television crime narratives and trans/cross-mediated crime narratives such as adaptations, since they are stories and creative processes that transcend the bor- ders between countries and media. My contribution seeks to engage with scholarly debates about Italian crime narratives, investigating how the case study of the representation of “criminal Rome” provides its own individual contribution to the distinct imagery of contemporary Italian noir. Keywords: Rome, crime, suburb, non-place, contemporary Italian cinema. Volume 22 96 “ROMA(nzo) criminale” kvarter Livio Lepratto akademiskacademic quarter As highlighted elsewhere in this special issue (Re and Coviello 2021), in recent years Italian crime screenwriting has been gradu- ally shifting farther away from setting its narrative locations in the symbolic and productive centre of the country, i.e.

CUSTODY a XAVIER LEGRAND picture US PRESS COVERAGE EW REVIEWS Xavier Legrand's Custody is a harrowing, heartbreaking French import: EW review KINO LORBER CHRIS NASHAWATY July 06, 2018 at 03:23 PM EDT Custody TYPE Movie GENRE Drama RELEASE DATE 06/29/18 PERFORMER Denis Ménochet, Léa Drucker DIRECTOR Xavier Legrand MPAA Unrated E GAVE IT AN A- Xavier Legrand’s French import, Custody, isn’t technically a horror movie. But it’s as harrowing and stressful as Hereditary or A Quiet Place. In a way, it’s even more terrifying because its monster is a father who, at first, seems like a tragic figure deprived of the right to see his children only to reveal himself as the unrelenting brute his wife claims he is. We’ve all seen these sorts of domestic bogeymen before in any number of Lifetime movies. But rarely are they presented with the matter-of-fact naturalism that Legrand brings to his Venice Silver Lion winner. It’s not a pleasant film to sit through by any means – you engage with it at your own risk. Still, it is undeniably powerful. And, more than that, exquisitely acted thanks to a set of performances that don’t feel like performances at all. You feel its horror in your bones so deeply that it’s impossible to shake it off when it’s over. The film opens in the drab bureaucratic chambers of a French civil-court judge who’s hearing both sides of a custody dispute between a warring pair of exes. Miriam (Lea Drucker) claims that she should be the sole guardian of her two children – 18-year-old Joséphine (Mathilde Auneveux) and 11-year-old Julien (Thomas Gioria).

Political Economy, Security, and Society in the 21st Century, Matthew Evangelista, ed. London: Routledge, 83-102. Introduction: The Italian Anomaly Italy is a borderline country, teetering permanently on the brink of disaster in conditions of stable instability, battered by continuous crises that mostly originate in the political system to infiltrate the now dysfunctional economic and social environments. The unification of Italy occurred more than 150 years ago, yet the country never developed a coherent and fully- integrated sense of its own identity. On the contrary, the country is composed of contradictory – and sometimes totally incompatible – models of politics and economic development, as well as controversial life-styles. Undoubtedly, this is not a genetic shortcoming specific to Italians, but a product of a convoluted political past.
