chapter 7 Mr. Bai and Mr. Qian Earn Their Living: Considering Two Handwritten Notebooks of Matching Couplets from China in the Late Qing and Early Republic 老白老錢寫對聯兒 Introduction This chapter explores two chaoben that I bought in China in the spring of 2012. They were written between the end of the Qing dynasty, around 1880, and the early years of the Republic, about 1913. They were both written by literate men whose daily life was very close to the common people in terms of their life expectations and their modest incomes. The men, who had received some formal education and had the ability to read and to write, took advantage of those abilities to earn income by preparing couplets of congratulatory poems that were, and still are, a big part of the social and celebratory life of the Chinese. By attempting to draw inferences and make logical assumptions from the information in these two chaoben and the manner in which the information was presented, I suggest the ways in which they can reveal something about the lives, the worldview, and the economic standing of both men. By looking carefully at the contents of what they wrote, we see that these chaoben can also be used to reconstruct something about the communities in which both men lived and worked. The bulk of the content in both chaoben is matching couplets. Many literate men in this period could regularly earn extra income by offering to write matching couplets, celebratory rhyming phrases that were demanded on many social occasions, such as New Year festivities and weddings.

  • A Study of Beginning-Level and Intermediate-Level Chinese Learners' Writing D
Computer-based Writing and Paper-based Writing: A Study of Beginning-level and Intermediate-level Chinese Learners’ Writing Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Hana Kang, M.A. Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures The Ohio State University 2011 Dissertation Committee: Professor Marjorie K.M. Chan, Advisor Professor Alan Hirvela, Co-advisor Professor Mark Bender Copyright by Hana Kang 2011 Abstract Chinese writing is one of the most difficult challenges for Chinese learners whose first language writing system is alphabetic letters. Chinese teachers have incorporated computer-based writing into their teaching in the attempt to reduce the difficulties of writing in Chinese, with a particular emphasis on composing (as opposed to simply writing individual Chinese characters). However, there is a lack of study to fully understand the complexity of Chinese learners’ computer-based and paper-based writing modes and their writing development. This study compares these two writing modes of beginning-level and intermediate-level Chinese learners and investigates how they develop Chinese writing by analyzing their writing errors. This study uses “mixed methods” that include a combination of qualitative and quantitative approaches to examine participants’ Chinese writing. Surveys and interviews were conducted to examine participants’ views of Chinese writing and their attitudes toward computer-based and paper-based writing. In total, 58 beginning-level and 12 intermediate-level learners participated in the survey study. Individual writing sessions were arranged with 16 beginning-level and 12 intermediate-level participants for analyzing their writing process.

  • American Chinese Medicine
American Chinese Medicine Tyler Phan A thesis presented for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Supervised by: Joseph Calabrese Vivienne Lo Department of Anthropology UCL April 2017 I, Tyler Phan confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. Tyler Phan April 2017 2 Abstract This thesis explores the power structures which shape Chinese medicine in the United States. Chinese medicine had two incarnations: migrant Chinese practice and its professionalized form. From the 1880s to the 1940s, Chinese medicine was practiced by the Chinese diaspora to serve their communities and non-Chinese settler populations. From the 1970s onward, Chinese medicine professionalized under the agency of acupuncture. Through the regulation of acupuncture, groups of predominately white Americans began to create standards of practice based on the enactment of what I have referred to as “orientalized biopower.” Orientalized biopower is the process where America’s predominately white counterculture began to encompass an orientalism which romanticized a form of Chinese medicine constructed in the 1950s by the People’s Republic of China called Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). With the adoption of TCM in the United States, they also formulated measures which marginalized Asian Americans practitioners. The profession then labelled itself as “Oriental Medicine” embodying Edward Said’s concept of Orientalism. Along with this form of orientalism, the counterculture used the State to push for a standardized epistemology of TCM. In return, the State encompassed standardized Chinese medicine as element of biopower. My research is informed by a cross-country ethnography of schools, regulatory bodies, and private practices around North America.

White Ravens – Chinese books, 1984-2020 The annually published “White Ravens” catalogue is the most important ongoing publication of the International Youth Library (IYL), in Munich. It is published each autumn to be presented at the Frankfurt Book Fair. All new White Ravens titles are introduced at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair the following year. From the large number of reviewer's copies and donations which are received from publishing houses, institutions, organizations and friends of the library, the IYL language specialists (Lektoren) select 200 new outstanding books from more than 50 countries in over 30 languages to be White Ravens each year. A few years ago, I started to put together a list of all the Chinese titles that have been selected as White Ravens over the years, collecting data online and visiting the IYL in July 2019. Lucia Obi, the East Asian language specialist at the IYL kindly checked my work, edited it and enhanced it. Together, we can now share this impressive list of Chinese White Ravens.
