2017 ANNUAL REPORT BBBSPEI Annual Report 2017 Page 1 ANNUAL REPORT FROM BOARD AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR FOR THE YEAR 2016-2017 Our Vision is … “every child on PEI who needs a Mentor has a Mentor” and our Mission is to “provide children in need with quality Mentoring programs”. Big Brothers Big Sisters of PEI continues to play a significant role in the lives of many families in PEI. The table below indicates the number of children served between January and December 2017. NUMBER OF CHILDREN SERVED IN 2017 Date Big Big Big Big In- Kids Go Game Teen Total Brother Sister Couple Sister School n’ Girls On Mentor Little Mentor Kops Brother Total 15 25 9 6 56 0 31 9 194 345 children served 2017 Total 18 29 10 4 40 10 34 34 112 291 children served 2016 Total 18 38 6 4 48 11 34 0 10 169 children served 2015 Total children 23 36 9 3 50 11 6 8 146 served 2014 BBBSPEI Annual Report 2017 Page 2 While 2017 has brought a slight decline in the number of matches in our Traditional program, we have made steady progress in our In-school Mentoring and Teen Mentoring programs. Teen Mentoring is especially popular among Leadership students in both High School and Intermediate school classes. In 2017 six High Schools including Montague Regional, Three Oaks, Bluefield, Kensington, Kinkora and Colonel Gray participated along with three Intermediate schools, Montague, East Wiltshire and Athena. Currently, we are in discussions with staff at Ecole Francois Buote, Morell Regional and Charlottetown Rural schools who have expressed an interest in starting programs in the Winter/Spring term in 2018.The growth in this program has been made possible with generous donations from the Rotary Club of Charlottetown Royalty ($90,000) and Rogers Communications ($25,000).

  • 2012 Directory of Self-Help Groups and Community Resources in Prince Edward Island
2012 DIRECTORY OF SELF-HELP GROUPS AND COMMUNITY RESOURCES IN PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND A Partnership Project of the Canadian Mental Health Association Prince Edward Island Division and the Prince Edward Island Department of Health & Wellness C.M.H.A. Office: Box 785 - 178 Fitzroy Street Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island C1A 7L9 Phone: 628-1648/436-7399/853-4180 Toll Free: 1-800-682-1648 Email: [email protected] Home Page: www.cmha.pe.ca 19th Edition 2012 FOREWORD 3 Dear Friends, It is my pleasure to introduce to you the 19th edition of Prince Ed- ward Island's Directory of Self-Help Groups and Community Re- sources. Today more and more Islanders are recognizing the need for emo- tional support and information when dealing with physical or men- tal health problems and life's stressful situations. They are looking to self-help groups and community resources as health resources. Emotional and social support can greatly relieve the stress related to health problems and can increase one’s ability to cope success- fully with day-to-day living. The Canadian Mental Health Association/Prince Edward Island Division (CMHA) has been promoting and assisting self-help groups since the fall of 1988 through the Self-Help Clearinghouse (now the Consumer and Family Support Program). Information about self-help groups and community resources, technical assis- tance and resources on mental health and mental illness are pro- vided by the CMHA for the general public at our facilities in Char- lottetown, Summerside and Alberton. This Directory is a part of that service and together these services form our Consumer and Family Support Program.

  • Islanders' Guide to the Mental Health Act
______________________________ _____________________________ Community Legal Information Association of Prince Edward Island, Inc. Islanders' Guide to the Mental Health Act Prince Edward Island's Mental Health Act defines mental disorder as "a substantial disorder of thought, mood, perception, orientation or memory that seriously impairs judgment, behaviour, capacity to recognize reality or ability to meet the ordinary demands of life." If a person seems to have lost the ability to understand and appreciate how they are behaving or thinking or if he or she is unable to reason or remember things, and this seriously affects their behaviour, they may have a mental disorder. However, the Act clearly says that a mental handicap or learning disability is not a mental disorder in and of itself. Hillsborough Hospital, the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and the Prince County Hospital are psychiatric institutions which provide in-patient treatment for some people suffering from mental disorders. As well, some people receive treatment as out-patients at community-based mental health clinics or treatment centres where mental illness can be professionally diagnosed and treated. An Addiction Facility may also have the authority to admit people as involuntary patients under the Mental Health Act when the mental disorder is caused by alcohol or other drugs. For more information about this, call the staff of an addiction treatment program. Admissions There are two types of admission to a mental health facility: voluntary, when the patient agrees to or asks for treatment, and involuntary, when a patient does not agree to receive treatment. In certain circumstances, people may also be admitted for assessment and/or treatment under the Criminal Code of Canada.
