The historic building record forms part of a programme of archaeological work associated with the development of land at Hogwood Farm, Sheerlands Road, Finchhampstead, Berkshire. A site visit was carried out on 20th March 2019 by a buildings archaeologist from Wessex Archaeology. Although partially obscured by vegetation, the Pillbox was found to be in good condition and mostly intact. The structure appears to have been constructed as part of the deep defences of G.H.Q Line A as well as serving as a defence post for the east approaches to Arborfield Garrison a short distance to the north-west. The Pillbox appears to be a variant of the Type 26 with a chamber for rifles and/or light machine guns. The structure appears to be constructed of brick with pre-fabricated sections of standard pillbox elements such as the precast concrete embrasure loopholes. It contains a standard size doorway and a blast wall demarcating a passageway to the entrance. The roof consists of shuttered concrete and the floor is made of a concrete slab. The historic building recording exercise has ensured that a record of this WWII Pillbox has been recorded for future research and interest. Acknowledgements This project was commissioned by Legal and General Homes and Wessex Archaeology is grateful to Nick Jordan in this regard. This report was written by Alvaro Mora-Ottomano and edited by Matt Rous with illustrations by Grace Flood. The project was managed on behalf of Wessex Archaeology by Matt Rous. ii Doc ref 218331.1 Issue 1, April 2019 Hogwood Farm, WWII Pillbox at Nine Mile Ride, Finchampstead, Berkshire Historic Building Record Hogwood Farm WWII Pillbox, at Nine Mile Ride Finchampstead, Berkshire Historic Building Record 1 INTRODUCTION 1.1 Project background 1.1.1 Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by Legal and General Homes (hereafter ‘the Client’) to produce a historic building record of a World War II (WWII) Pillbox situated near the junction of Nine Mile Ride and Park Lane, Finchampstead, Berkshire, RG40 4PY, approximately centred on National Grid Reference (NGR) 477725, 164495 (hereafter ‘the Site’, Figure 1). 1.1.2 The historic building record forms part of a programme of archaeological work associated with the development of land at Hogwood Farm, Sheerlands Road, Finchhampstead, Berkshire. 1.1.3 The historic building recording was carried out in accordance with a Written Scheme of Investigation (WSI) produced by Wessex Archaeology (2019), which was submitted to the Berkshire County Archaeologist, advisor to Wokingham Borough Council, in advance of the work. 1.2 Site location and description 1.2.1 The WWII Pillbox is located to the north of the junction of Nine Mile Ride and Park Lane, at the north-eastern corner of the field opposite the Robinson Crusoe Caravan Park and to the north-west
