Gathered by the Social Protest Project primarily on Sproul Plaza for the UC undergraduate library between 1969-1982, the material primarly relates to the Vietnam War and Civil Rights demonstrations although there is significant material on Black Power, political issues, the Women's movement, lesbian and gay rights, Third World issues, the Left and Right, campus labor disputes, and the movement against nuclear power and nuclear weapons. Civil Rights papers include: the archives of the Congress of Racial Equality; the personal papers of George Wiley, Congress of Racial Equality leader and founder of the National Welfare Rights Organization; the archives of the Highlander Folk School; and papers of Kentucky civil rights activists Carl and Anne Braden and their organization, the Southern Conference Educational Fund. Anti-Vietnam War movement collections include: Student Peace Union, Student Mobilization Committee to End the War in Vietnam, Fifth Avenue Peace Parade Committee, National Peace Action Coalition and Students for a Democratic Society. The Society also houses the archives of the Socialist Labor Party and the Trotskyist Socialists Workers Party. The Martin Luther King, Jr. Center, Atlanta, Georgia. The Center has a substantial Archives on the southern civil rights movement including: the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, Dr. King's personal papers, and the records of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). Swarthmore Peace Collection, Swarthmore College, Pennsylvania. Collections include American Friends Service Committee; National Committee for a SANE Nuclear Policy, Inc.; War Resisters League; and Women's International League for Peace and Freedom. Tamiment Collection, New York University. Papers of socialist organizations and individuals are the major strength of the Tamiment Collection. This archive's origins are deeply rooted in the Socialist Party of Eugene Debs and in the New York labor movement of the early part of the twentieth century. Serial titles have been transferred to the Bancroft serial collection. The collection was gathered under the auspices of the University of California Berkeley Undergraduate Library and later transferred to the custody of the Collection Development Office. The Bancroft Library acquired the collection in 1972.
