I am sincerely grateful to the Presbyterian Church of Ghana for the opportunity and support throughout the study. iv ABSTRACT This thesis focuses on investigating and identifying the factors leading to the migration of members from Historic Mission churches to Pentecostal/Charismatic churches (PCCs) with emphasis on the Presbyterian Church of Ghana (PCG) using Ga and Dangme-Tongus Presbyteries as case studies. The advent of the Pentecostal/Charismatic churches in Ghana since the early twentieth Century has led to a slow growth in membership of Historic Mission churches. Thus, this study involves quantitative and qualitative research approaches. Structured questionnaires were administered, and interviews conducted at selected districts in the two presbyteries with personal observation in order to unravel the phenomenon of migration in the Presbyterian Church of Ghana. The findings of the research acknowledged that migration of members from PCG to PCCs is a reality. This has over the years led to slow growth in membership, human resource mobilization and finances of PCG. There are “push” and “pull” factors in PCG and PCCs respectively which accounts for this phenomenon. The outcome of these findings requires that in order to develop individual gifts and ministries in the PCG, congregations should recognize, encourage and train members as disciples for the missional work of the Church. Thus, the lay will become the active components of the Church. PCG should give baptismal candidates the option to choose the type of baptism they prefer. This will resolve the issue of members migrating to Pentecostal/Charismatic churches to seek baptism by immersion. Furthermore, there is the need for youth services and youth pastors in all PCG congregations in order to bridge the existing generational gap. While the exploitative German colonial agenda was motivated by economic exigencies at home, the policy of Germanization emerged within the context of national self- image that was running its course in nineteenth-century Europe. Germany, like other colonial powers, manifested a faulty feeling of what Etim (2014: 197) describes as a “moral and racial superiority” over Africans. Bringing Africans to the same level of civilization with Europeans, according to European colonial philosophy, required that colonialism be given a civilizing perspective. This civilizing agenda, it should be noted, turned out to be a common goal for both missionaries and colonial governments. Indeed the civilization of Africans was central to governments and mission agencies. It was in this context of baseless cultural arrogance that the missionization of Africa unfolded, with funds and security offered by colonial governments. Clearly, missionaries approved and promoted the pseudo-scientific colonial goal of Europeanizing Africa through the imposition of European culture, religion and philosophy. According to Pawlikova-Vilhanova (2007: 258), Christianity provided access to a Western civilization and culture pattern which was bound to subjugate African society. There was complicity between colonial governments and missions in the cultural imperialism that coursed in Africa (Woodberry 2008; Strayer 1976). One of these was the Augustana Lutheran Church, founded by Swedish Lutheran immigrants and maintain­ ing an independent existence from 1860 to 1962 when it became a part of a larger Lutheran community, the Lutheran Church of America. The character of the Augustana Church can be studied from different viewpoints. In this volume Dr. George Hall describes it as a missionary church. It was born out of a missionary concern in Sweden for the thousands who had emigrated. As soon as it was formed it began to widen its field. Then its representatives were found in In­ dia, Puerto Rico, in China. The horizons grew to include Africa and Southwest Asia. Two World Wars created havoc, but also national and international agencies.

It argues that improving the current land tenure policy demands integration of customary land law and customary authorities into the statutory system. After describing why and how customary property practices are central to the economic viability of any property system, the Note gives a brief overview of Ghana’s customary and statutory land law. The Note concludes with specific policy suggestions about how Ghana could better draw on the strength of its customary land sector. A. Amonoo sits in the Roll of Honour in the entrance hall of Queen’s College, Taunton, Somerset, England together with the names of other former pupils who served in the First World War. In recent times, focus on K. A. Amonoo has been on his palatial residence, which he built in Anomabo, a coastal town in Ghana, in colonial Gold Coast, as Micots (2015 and 2017) have sought to emphasize in terms of the architectural design of his residence. This report, thereon, is presented to the Speaker for submission to Parliament in compliance with Article 187(5) of the Constitution. The report contains matters of significance that I believe should be brought to the attention of the House. These came to my notice during my officers’ financial and compliance audits of the accounts of the MDAs. Audit objectives 2. The over-all purpose of the audits is to give an opinion on the accounts of each MDA submitted for my examination.
