Hall \ THE MISSIONARY SPIRIT IN THE AUGUSTANA CHURCH The American church is made up of many varied groups, depending on origin, divisions, changing relationships. One of these was the Augustana Lutheran Church, founded by Swedish Lutheran immigrants and maintain­ ing an independent existence from 1860 to 1962 when it became a part of a larger Lutheran community, the Lutheran Church of America. The character of the Augustana Church can be studied from different viewpoints. In this volume Dr. George Hall describes it as a missionary church. It was born out of a missionary concern in Sweden for the thousands who had emigrated. As soon as it was formed it began to widen its field. Then its representatives were found in In­ dia, Puerto Rico, in China. The horizons grew to include Africa and Southwest Asia. Two World Wars created havoc, but also national and international agencies. Augustana's part-one of support, cooperation, leadership-in missions throughout the world is a fascinating story, and a contribution to the history of mis­ sions. It is a story that the Augustana Historical Society is happy to add to its lengthening series. Soon few will remember what kind of a church the Augustana Synod was before it merged and became a part of the Lutheran Church in America. It is the purpose of this book to emphasize one of its characteristics._Augustana was a missionary church. Emmet Eklund in his recent book on Peter Fjellstedt Missionary Men­ tor to Three Continents has described the influence of this Swedish churchman on the leaders of the immigrant body and their missionary concerns. From the first Augustana people thought of the world field as well as of their own. Their first cooperation with other Lutherans opened paths to India and Puerto Rico. In retrospect it seems that the flowering of missionary ac­ tivity in Augustana came after the world missionary conference at Edinburgh in 1910. The interest of college students goes back to the 19th century, but in the first two decades of the 20th there was eager response to calls from China and Africa. Not only was this on the part of individuals on campuses but also in the dedication of Augustana families whose names appear in many parts of the world. Furthermore we meet with organizations that involved whole groups of church members: the student missionary societies, the China Society, the Woman's Home and Foreign Missionary Society. Comparative­ ly the Synod was a small body-was there any other Lutheran church that inspired so many of its members to missionary study, to volunteer service, to financial contributions, to posi­ tions of leadership? In World Wa� 11 the map of the earth changed. We now read of necessary alterations in Africa and Asia as well as in Europe and America to meet recurrent crises. Fruits of earlier VI generations now appear in the part played by Augustana per­ sons in decisions of the Lutheran World Federation and the World Council. The Church had become ecumenical and a new chapter was written in the overseas churches. Missionary interest could not be confined to the established denominations-individuals went forth on their own to bring the message of Christ to a broken world. Augustana missions were represented in important administrative positions on several continents as well as on lonely paths of faith endeavors in obscure places. To tell the story of the missionary character of this church, especially in its later phases, Dr. George Hall has been prevailed on. Few have had access to the fields of our own generation as he has had in meeting assignments both in education and administration. His personal acquaintance with the person­ nel on the fields gives authenticity to the story he tells. His 50 years as an ordained minister has given him an almost equal portion of service before and after the 1962 merger. Knowing Augustana before and after, he speaks with experience of a church which now is history but, which also, through the grace of God, helped make history. The article is based on a research project comprising three studies: a qualitative study, an analysis of websites and information material, and an internet-based survey. The results highlight the important role played by the parishes for older visitors, in terms of providing community, support and religious services. However, people above the age of 65 were virtually invisible on the church websites and in other information material. This paradox will be discussed and the concept of ageism is used in the analysis. While the exploitative German colonial agenda was motivated by economic exigencies at home, the policy of Germanization emerged within the context of national self- image that was running its course in nineteenth-century Europe. Germany, like other colonial powers, manifested a faulty feeling of what Etim (2014: 197) describes as a “moral and racial superiority” over Africans. Bringing Africans to the same level of civilization with Europeans, according to European colonial philosophy, required that colonialism be given a civilizing perspective. This civilizing agenda, it should be noted, turned out to be a common goal for both missionaries and colonial governments. Indeed the civilization of Africans was central to governments and mission agencies. It was in this context of baseless cultural arrogance that the missionization of Africa unfolded, with funds and security offered by colonial governments. Clearly, missionaries approved and promoted the pseudo-scientific colonial goal of Europeanizing Africa through the imposition of European culture, religion and philosophy. According to Pawlikova-Vilhanova (2007: 258), Christianity provided access to a Western civilization and culture pattern which was bound to subjugate African society. There was complicity between colonial governments and missions in the cultural imperialism that coursed in Africa (Woodberry 2008; Strayer 1976). Creating the Litmus Test: Abortion, Mainline Protestants, and the Rise of the Religious Right Abstract Scholars and laypeople have become concerned that American religion and politics has increasingly divided between conservatives and liberals, resulting in a "culture war" that leaves little common ground on salient social issues. Drawing on archival and periodical sources and a comparative-historical research design, I seek to understand the causes and consequences of the shifting relationship between religion and politics by examining how large, moderate and mainstream Protestant institutions have struggled to maintain cohesion and prestige throughout the increasingly contentious politics of abortion. In the early-1960s, no Mainline Protestant institutions supported expanding abortion access. Over 1966-1972, all the same institutions released official onouncementspr in support of expanding abortion access. Since this time, particularly from 1987-1992, all these institutions faced increased internal debate over the issue and shifted in conservative directions to varying degrees. I find that the debate around abortion among Mainline Protestant institutions was not generally characterized by polarization around two sides but rather by much consensus, change over time, ambiguity, and often ambivalence toward the issue.

English Lutheran Churches Lutheran Church of Australia (LCA) The largest Lutheran synod in Australia, the Lutheran Church of Australia (LCA) was formed in 1966 when the two Lutheran synods of that day, the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Australia (ELCA) and the United Evangelical Lutheran Church in Australia (UELCA), united into one Lutheran synod. The LCA has churches all over Australia and some in New Zealand. The head of the LCA is the synodical bishop. The LCA is also divided in districts with each district having their own district bishop. The LCA is an associate member of both the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) and the International Lutheran Council (ILC). The LCA is a member of the National Council of Churches in Australia. The LCA has official altar-pulpit fellowship with the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Papua New Guinea (ELCPNG) and Gutnius Lutheran Church of Papua New Guinea (GLCPNG) and a ‘Recognition of Relationship’ with the Lutheran Church of Canada (LCC). The LCA also has missions to the Australia Aboriginals. The LCA also has German, Finnish, Chinese, Indonesian and African congregations in Australia, which are considered members of the LCA. The LCA is also in fellowship with German, Latvian, Swedish, and Estonian congregations in Australia, which are not considered members of the LCA. Sylvester Michelfelder Country of origin: New Washington, Ohio, USA Date of birth: 27.10.1889 Date of death: 30.12.1951 Period of mandate: 1947-1951 Short biography: From German descent, Michelfelder was not an academic theologian. It was his skill as pastor, organizer and team leader that caused Ralph Long, director of the National Lutheran Council in New York to send him as commissioner of the American Section of the Lutheran World Convention to the rising World Council of Churches. On 18 July 1945, he arrived with his wife in Geneva after having crossed the ocean on the Miraposa and travelled by rail from Cherbourg which gave him ample evidence of emergency needs in Europe. Operations in Germany in the early post-war period was the first task of Michelfelder with led into close ties of confidence and networks of cooperation with German church leaders such as Hanns Lilje and Hans Meiser. His major accomplishment became then the careful preparation of the first Assembly of the LWF which represented international interaction between sisters and brothers of the same faith. Michelfelder had clear ideas for an Assembly with a three-part program: confessing the truth in a confused world, concentrated on the Word, the church and the sacraments, a section on evangelism, stewardship, foreign missions and aid operation and a final section on facing the problems in a troubled world. His abilities as an administrator became apparent particularly in two connections: when he prepared and led the First Assembly and when he led in the formation of a functional structure for the whole LWF, the Geneva Secretariat and the national committees.

    2 From missionaries to ecumenical co-workers A case study from Mission 21 in Kalimantan, Indonesia Claudia Hoffmann Introduction Mission 21, based in Basel, Switzerland, emerged through the union of several missionary organisations – Basel Mission is the best known amongst them – and was officially founded on 1 January 2001. Mission 21 sees its key tasks today in reduction of poverty, health care, agriculture, fair trade, education, the advance­ ment of peace, the empowerment of women and gender equality. Coincidentally, the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) were formulated around the same time, in September 2000, at the United Nations headquarters in New York by world leaders, “committing their nations to a new global partnership to reduce extreme poverty and setting out a series of time-bound targets” (United Nations 2016). The aims and goals of Mission 21 are therefore very similar to the agenda of secular development agencies trying to achieve the MDGs. Despite this simi­ larity to secular development organisations, Mission 21 is very keen to show the continuity between their work nowadays and their initial history in the early 19th century. Although there have been several considerable frictions, particularly dur­ ing the second half of the 20th century, their profile did not substantially change. This mission organisation had to come across with changes, not only recently in the early 2000s, but also during the 1950s and in the 1960s Basel Mission had to deal with several frictions that affected their work and self-concept. This interesting time of transition to post-colonialism constitutes an underestimated period in the history of Christianity in the 20th century.

LUTHERAN QUIZ As I investigated the Lutheran distinctives, I was relieved to see the emphasis Luther placed on fathers teaching the Christian faith to their children. Each Chief Part of the Small Catechism declares, “As the head of the family should teach his household…” It echoes my own conviction about what Scripture teaches. Indeed, during my time as a non-denominational church pastor I was constantly teaching our fathers how to teach the Christian faith to their little ones by the use of various catechisms. We even stepped it up a notch when our parents and children participated in a Bible Trivia match, utilizing competition against other churches. Other churches in our area memorized the same questions and answers, allowing us to compete on both the State and National levels. This ministry was an important piece in teaching the faith to our children. After discussing my experience with Pr. Bruss, we are creating something similar specifically for those children ages, 6 to 11. We want to instill in them the Bible knowledge as well as highlighting the Lutheran difference so that when Pr. Bruss, Deaconess Linda and I have those same children in catechism class, there is plenty to build upon. HOW IT WORKS: First, children and their parents (parents are key to success with this!) begin working on memorizing the questions and their answers. These are simple questions, with many answers containing only one word. When my children were little we reviewed questions at meals, throughout the day and at bed time.
