Each chapter of the article deals with the issues of synagogue research, heritage conservation and management, while the part about the restored independent Republic of Lithuania and modern days includes topical issues related to synagogue restoration, commemoration and putting them into operation. The study uses two different sources: archival materials and publications. Written sources and publications are reviewed in chronological order and start from the end of the 18th century. The study employs several research methods—the historical descriptive method, the comparative method and the analysis method. It is not possible to understand the existing trends in synagogue research in Lithuania without considering the country’s past—the times of the Russian Empire, the interwar period and the Soviet period.

Lithuanian Jews and the Holocaust
Ezra’s Archives | 77 Strategies of Survival: Lithuanian Jews and the Holocaust Taly Matiteyahu On the eve of World War II, Lithuanian Jewry numbered approximately 220,000. In June 1941, the war between Germany and the Soviet Union began. Within days, Germany had occupied the entirety of Lithuania. By the end of 1941, only about 43,500 Lithuanian Jews (19.7 percent of the prewar population) remained alive, the majority of whom were kept in four ghettos (Vilnius, Kaunas, Siauliai, Svencionys). Of these 43,500 Jews, approximately 13,000 survived the war. Ultimately, it is estimated that 94 percent of Lithuanian Jewry died during the Holocaust, a percentage higher than in any other occupied Eastern European country.1 Stories of Lithuanian towns and the manner in which Lithuanian Jews responded to the genocide have been overlooked as the perpetrator- focused version of history examines only the consequences of the Holocaust. Through a study utilizing both historical analysis and testimonial information, I seek to reconstruct the histories of Lithuanian Jewish communities of smaller towns to further understand the survival strategies of their inhabitants. I examined a variety of sources, ranging from scholarly studies to government-issued pamphlets, written testimonies and video testimonials. My project centers on a collection of 1 Population estimates for Lithuanian Jews range from 200,000 to 250,000, percentages of those killed during Nazi occupation range from 90 percent to 95 percent, and approximations of the number of survivors range from 8,000 to 20,000. The film- makers accused of blackening the reputation of Lithuanians counter that they showed the truth, and aren’t about to be censored. The NGO Kopa film studio made the film about the life of the Jewish community, commissioned by the Jurbarkas Regional Museum. The Jurbarkas municipality, which contributed 1,800 litas to the project, said they had bought a film which had turned upon the local community. After a screening the regional administration asked for corrections to the film: not to present the names of Jurbarkas residents who collaborated with the Nazis, to change the heroes and to include people who risked their lives to rescue Jews. Kopa films didn’t consent to do that, and 61-year-old director Beržinis threatened to take the municipal administration to court for trying to censor the film. 1 About the Massacres, from the Lips of Others The film, almost 40 minutes long, begins with a recounting of how Jurbarkas is a corner of Lithuania well disposed for trade, and the daily life and trades of Jews are shown. Also shown is a photograph recording six surviving Jews standing next to a grave where 1,222 of their compatriots lie. The names and family portraits of Jurbarkas residents who rescued Jews during World War II fly across the screen.

It found the contemporary national heritage protection framework failing to grant equal attention to elements constituting the multifaceted worth of the castle as a property, inclusive of the social, cultural, artistic values, the engagement of local communities, the important role of cultural tourism and the image of the place, and eco- nomic efficiency. The analysis of the different facets one by one and collectively has brought to the conclusion that the social, cultural, artistic and economic values of Panemunė Castle as a heritage property influence their environment, but are not experi- enced as a powerful driving force of the contemporary heritage protection. The process remains fragmented, sporadic and underdeveloped, with its elements failing to achieve synergism for the place. Daroma prielaida, kad moneta į pilį galėjo patekti kaip kolekcijos dalis arba iš netoliese pažeisto senojo geležies amžiaus objekto (kapo ar gyvenvietės) ir kartu su žvyru atsidurti tarp statybinių atliekų. Straipsnyje pateikia mos monetos radimo situacijos, jos iliustracijos. Raktažodžiai: Panemunės pilis, Gordiano III moneta, antoninianas ĮVADAS 2011 m. atliekant archeologinius tyrinėjimus Panemunės pilies (Jurbarko r. sav., Pilies I k., Skirsnemunės sen.) kieme rasta romėniška Gordiano III (valdė 238–244 m.) moneta. Apie monetą buvo paskelbta pirminė informacija, pateikta jos iliustracija [11, 186–199, pav. 9]. Tai turbūt pirmas kartas, kai toks radinys buvo aptiktas pilies teritorijoje. Įprasta, kad ro mėniškų monetų randama kapuose, ypač Vakarų Lietuvoje, lobiuose, rečiau gyvenvietėse. 2001 m. duomenimis, iš 101 vietovės, kuriose rasta romėniškų monetų, 34 buvo kapinynai, 19 – lobių, 10 – piliakalnių ir gyvenviečių [14]. Kitais atvejais radavietės rūšis neaiški. Visgi galima daryti prielaidą, kad ir tarp šių atvejų didžiąją dalį sudaro monetos iš kapinynų, tik apie tai dar trūksta duomenų. Nors romėniškos monetos nėra itin retas radinys – jų rasta daugelyje Lietuvos vietovių, vis dėlto jų randama ne kasdien. Todėl kiekvienas naujas radi nys yra svarbus mūsų praeičiai pažinti ir nusipelno atidesnio žvilgsnio. Žvelgiant į pilies tyrinėjimų metu surinktą medžiagą matyti, kad Gordiano III moneta nelabai dera prie pilies gyvavimo tarpsnio ir vėlesnio laikotarpio radinių.

The Situation of Children and Young People at the Regional Level in Lithuania Prepared by Lithuania Country Statistical Team Co-ordinator: Vida Stoskute Statistics Lithuania, Vilnius MONEE Country Analytical Report November 2004 The project to monitor the impact of economic and social change on children in Eastern and Central Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States (MONEE) was initiated at the UNICEF Innocenti Research Centre in 1992. The project seeks to monitor, analyse and disseminate information on economic and social trends affecting children’s rights and wellbeing in countries in the region. A key feature of the Project is a network of correspondents in the 27 National Statistical Offices (NSOs). On an annual basis these correspondents complete an extensive data template which in turn is used for calculating indicators, supporting research of the project and, in due course, being made publicly available as the TransMonee database and in tables and graphs of the Innocenti Social Monitor. For a number of years, each participating NSO prepared a Country Analytical Report based on extensive outline from UNICEF IRC on a different theme on the situation of children every year. These analytical reports have provided valuable input into the research at UNICEF IRC and, as significantly, have also served as important national documents on monitoring aspects of child wellbeing in the countries. Some of these Country Analytical Reports have been issued by the NSOs (in the national language) as part of their publication programme. UNICEF IRC attaches great value to these national assessments of the situation of children and is committed to promote the efforts, including through translating the reports into English (where the submitted report has been in Russian) and offering its website to make them accessible to a wider research audience.
