Colour photographs of Ingrid by Anton Dressler. 2 Chopin: Piano Concertos ‘Hats off, gentlemen, a genius!’ Robert Schumann’s celebrated appraisal of the seventeen-year-old Frédéric Chopin in the Allgemeine musikalische Zeitung of 7 December 1831 thrust the young Polish wunderkind into the European limelight in no uncertain terms. For Schumann, as for many others, the success of the Variations on Là ci darem la mano from Mozart’s Don Giovanni raised considerable expectations for what was to follow, expectations that would, with almost unseemly abruptness, be left unrealised. 3 Composed for piano and orchestra, the Variations had been only the second piece by the teenage prodigy to be published in 1827 (the fi rst, the precocious Rondo in C minor, composed two years earlier when he was just fi fteen, a markedly less ambitious piece for solo piano). It was also Chopin’s fi rst work for a pairing that was to become both touchstone and trial for composers eager to make their mark in the middle of the nineteenth century but one that was soon to lose its allure for Chopin himself. -

There was a shortage of news at the beginning of the year, and since the summer there has been a shortage of time and efficiency. As my French counterpart has reminded me in no uncertain terms, our Bulletins are our only contact with most of our members. Please be assured that the Society is still running; our bank account is well in the black; and we can look forward to some exciting events in the year 2000. I must thank all the members who kept the faith by sending subscriptions or donations during this fallow year. Your contributions have all been recorded, and if you wish I will carry them over for 2000. If, in the usual rush to fill envelopes once the bulletin is printed and ready for dispatch, I enclose a form for subscriptions or donations which you feel is unnecessary, then please be assured that I will keep your name on the mailing list. As you will read later, we can certainly use some new funds, so any donations or subscriptions for 2000 will be welcomed and acknowledged. I intend to issue a receipt or membership card for the coming year, with each paid-up member allocated a reference number. Although his last three piano concertos were not created as a set (they spanned about a decade in their composition), they nevertheless exhibit a similar level of contrast. No. 3 is stormy and agitated; No. 4 is gentle and lyrical; and No. 5 is grand and majestic – so much so that in English-speaking countries it has gained the nickname ‘Emperor’. -

To provide an even wider reach for its innovative programs, the Conservatory has launched the Building National Dreams Campaign to restore its historic Victorian home and build a state-of-the-art performance and learning centre. Opening in 2007, the TELUS Centre for Performance and Learning will be one of the world’s greatest arts and education venues and a wonderful resource for all Canadians. Designed by Kuwabara Payne McKenna Blumberg Architects (KPMB), this stunning facility will feature new academic and performance space, including an acoustically perfect 1,000-seat concert hall, new studios and classrooms, a new-media centre, library and rehearsal hall. O seu primeiro contacto com Robert Schumann o piano aconteceu através da avó materna, a pianista Berta da Sonata nº 1 em Fá sustenido menor, op.11 (1835; c.40min.) Nóbrega, e do seu parceiro pianístico Campos Coelho, discípulo 1. Introduzione (un poco adagio/allegro vivace) de Vianna da Motta, Ricardo Viñes e Isidor Philipp. Entre 1974 e 2. He was educated and skilled in music, painting and drawing, languages, the classics, as well as being an accomplished sportsman, dancer and chess player. His musical accomplishments – of which composition was always the most important in his own eyes – also include performances as a virtuoso on the piano and organ, a gifted violinist, a conductor, and an administrator and editor who has left a legacy still respected and followed in the twenty-fi rst century. Born in Hamburg, 3 February 1809, Felix was the second child of Abraham and Lea Mendelssohn. Abraham was a successful banker in a fi rm he founded with his brother in Berlin, a city he and his family (including the children Fanny [born 1805], Felix and another daughter, Rebecka [born 1811]) returned to in July 1811.
