Nascido em Lisboa, em 1968, Artur Pizarro deu o seu primeiro espectáculo com apenas 3 anos, tendo ‑se estreado um ano mais tarde na Radiotelevisão Portuguesa. O seu primeiro contacto com Robert Schumann o piano aconteceu através da avó materna, a pianista Berta da Sonata nº 1 em Fá sustenido menor, op.11 (1835; c.40min.) Nóbrega, e do seu parceiro pianístico Campos Coelho, discípulo 1. Introduzione (un poco adagio/allegro vivace) de Vianna da Motta, Ricardo Viñes e Isidor Philipp. Entre 1974 e 2. Artur Pizarro venceu, em 1987, o 1º Prémio do Concurso Vianna Kreisler/Rachmaninoff da Motta; em 1988, o Greater Palm Beach Symphony Competition; Liebesleid & Liebesfreud (c.12min.) e, em 1990, o Leeds International Pianoforte Competition, o que marcou o início da sua carreira internacional como concertista. Apresenta ‑se regularmente por todo o mundo em recitais a solo e de música de câmara e em concertos com algumas das mais importantes orquestras internacionais dirigidas por notáveis maes‑ tros como Sir Simon Rattle, Philippe Entremont, Yan Pascal Torte‑ lier, Sir Andrew Davis, Esa ‑Pekka Salonen, Yuri Temirkanov, Vladimir Fedoseyev, Ilan Volkov, Franz Welser ‑Most,Tugan Sokhiev, Yakov Kreizberg, Yannick Nézet ‑Séguin, Libor Pesek, Vladimir Jurowski, Ion Marin, John Wilson e o já falecido Sir Charles Mackerras. Artur Pizarro actua frequentemente em diversos festivais importantes por todo o mundo. Em 2014, formou uma parceria com o pianista Rinaldo Zhok, e a sua primeira gravação em CD de obras para piano a quatro mãos foi lançada em 2015 pela Odra‑ dek Records. Da sua discografia destacam ‑se as gravações feitas para as etiquetas Collins Classics, Hyperion Records, Linn Records, Brilliant Classics, Klara, Naxos, Danacord, Phoenix Edition e Odra‑ dek Records ‑ nesta última acaba de lançar a obra completa para piano solo de Sergei Rachmaninoff. Ao longo da sua carreira tem sido agraciado com alguns prémios no seu país, em reconhecimento pelo serviço prestado à cultura e à música clássica, tais como o Prémio da Imprensa Portu‑ guesa, Prémio da Sociedade Portuguesa de Autores, Medalha de Mérito Cultural da Cidade do Funchal e Medalha de Mérito Cultu‑ ral do Governo Português.     Programme Mozart: Die Zauberflöte Overture (The Magic Flute) Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 4 in G major -- Interval -- Brahms: Symphony No. 2 in D major Soloists Aya Kawabata was born in Tokyo. From 1989 to 1991 she lived in England and studied at the Junior Guildhall School of Music with Joan Havill. In 1997 she was offered a place at the Tokyo Metropolitan High School of Music and Arts to study for three years during which time she studied with Professor Teruji Karashima and was awarded a silver medal in the Japan Classical Competition. In 2001 she came back to England to study at the Royal Academy of Music and completed a Bachelor of Music degree with First Class Honours in 2005. She studied with Ian Fountain and Diana Ketler, and was invited to play in master classes with Alexander Satz, Petras Geniusas and Emanuel Krasovsky. During her time at the Academy, she was awarded the Blakiston Prize (Highly Commended), the Mathew Philimore Prize (Winner), the George Award (Winner), the Leslie England Prize (Very Highly Commended), the Wilfred Parry Prize (Very Highly Commended), the Maud Hornsby Award (Winner), and the Peter Latham Gift (Winner) for her performances, and also was awarded a bursary award for her studies. She has taken master classes with Armen Babakhanian, Andrew Ball, Christopher Elton, Ruth Harte, John Lill, Artur Pizarro, and Veronika Vitaitė in various festivals, and has performed extensively in England – London (including performances as a soloist with orchestras), Cambridge, Leeds, Salisbury, and Bristol – and also in Scotland, Austria, France, Italy, Lithuania, Latvia, Kazakhstan (broadcast live on Kazakh TV and satellite), Turkey (filming for NHK), and Japan.

For Schumann, as for many others, the success of the Variations on Là ci darem la mano from Mozart’s Don Giovanni raised considerable expectations for what was to follow, expectations that would, with almost unseemly abruptness, be left unrealised. 3 Composed for piano and orchestra, the Variations had been only the second piece by the teenage prodigy to be published in 1827 (the fi rst, the precocious Rondo in C minor, composed two years earlier when he was just fi fteen, a markedly less ambitious piece for solo piano). It was also Chopin’s fi rst work for a pairing that was to become both touchstone and trial for composers eager to make their mark in the middle of the nineteenth century but one that was soon to lose its allure for Chopin himself.

No. 3 is stormy and agitated; No. 4 is gentle and lyrical; and No. 5 is grand and majestic – so much so that in English-speaking countries it has gained the nickname ‘Emperor’.

He was educated and skilled in music, painting and drawing, languages, the classics, as well as being an accomplished sportsman, dancer and chess player. His musical accomplishments – of which composition was always the most important in his own eyes – also include performances as a virtuoso on the piano and organ, a gifted violinist, a conductor, and an administrator and editor who has left a legacy still respected and followed in the twenty-fi rst century. Born in Hamburg, 3 February 1809, Felix was the second child of Abraham and Lea Mendelssohn. Abraham was a successful banker in a fi rm he founded with his brother in Berlin, a city he and his family (including the children Fanny [born 1805], Felix and another daughter, Rebecka [born 1811]) returned to in July 1811.
