Since 2015,it has been the second issue brought out by the editorial board composed of the employees of the Faculty of Corporate Strategy of Institute of Technology and Business in České Budějovice. As a matter of fact, we strive for including high-quality studies reflecting the latest development in economy, management, marketing, linguistics, education and history. The inclusion of the journal in ERIH Plus database is perceived as an appreciation of our sustained effort. It also presents a real challenge for our journal to be considered for a prestigious Scopus database. We believe that we will achieve this ambitious goal together with our contributors. With respect to the technical changes, we would like to point out the newly-designed front page of the journal. It has got a new graphic design including the key areas of research suggested in the journal. Moreover, the publishing portal, on which the journal has been published, changed significantly so that readers will be provided with a neat user interface. In addition, the editorial work will be less complex. The Masaryk Institute of Advanced Studies 9 Number of Protestants in the Russian Administrative Apparatus under Peter the Great Alexander Andreev South Ural State University Abstract The aim of the article is to elicit the number and proportion of Protestants among civil servants in the Russian Central government under Peter the Great. The author determines a circle of officials who could potentially profess the Protestant faith (whose families came from Western and Central Europe countries) and verifies their confessional status. For this purpose the author used a genealogical method, which consists in finding and systematization of unique biographical data, as well as in ascertainment of family ties (including the data of Lutheran and Catholic metric books). The results revealed that Protestants were concentrated in the upper level of the State apparatus in the initial period of Russian Collegiums’ development. The number of Protestants in the composition of civil servants in the Central apparatus in 1720 was in the range of 59–73 persons. Among responsible officials of 1–8 classes (106 persons) the Protestants were no less than 20, 8%. However, by the end of the reign of Peter I the proportion of Protestants in this category of servants has decreased to about 8–10%.     https://doi.org/10.15633/fhc.3603 Adam Świątek https://orcid.org/0000-0003-4256-3496 Jagiellonian University in Kraków Three Histories of One Slovakia Polish Interwar Writings on the Slovaks’ Situation in the Face of the Collapse of the Habsburg Monarchy1 If we look through Polish library catalogues from the two decades after the es- tablishment of the First Czechoslovak Republic, we will find dozens of works in Polish devoted to Poland’s southern neighbour: some related to political, cultural, economic and historical issues, others conjuring up visions of that country’s future. This interesting material enables us to reconstruct how Poles (more specifically, politicians, social activists, journalists, writers and people of science) approached the genesis of Czechoslovakia, including internal rela- tions between Czechs and Slovaks, also remembering that for many centuries Slovakia was integrated into Hungary, whose territory shrunk significantly as a result of the Treaty of Trianon. The attitude towards Czechia, Slovakia and Hungary to some extent reflected the notions of Polish political and intellec- tual elites about the future balance of power in East Central Europe and what states (or political milieus in these states) Poland should have special relations with in the face of the danger posed by Germany and Bolshevik Russia. Slo- vakia played a role in these visions but, more importantly, ideas about the de- sired shape of future relations between Poland and its neighbours also im- pacted evaluations of Slovakia’s past and its path to unification with Czechia. On the basis of selected works published in interwar Poland, I will en- deavour to reconstruct Polish authors’ evaluations of the history of Slovaks 1.

    Suring the Waves: Scottish Admirals in Russia in their Baltic Context Steve Murdoch It has long been established, and frequently reafirmed, that the origins of the Russian navy and her distinctive Saltire insignia can be traced back to the inal years of General Patrick Gordon in his guise as Rear Admiral of the Russian navy.1 There is no doubt that after Gordon’s participation in Russia’s irst tentative naval manoeuvres off of Archangel in 1694, and the irst real amphibious operation against Azov in 1696 (in which Gordon had reverted to a land role), the Romanov dynasty attracted a notable presence of Scottish naval oficers to their cause.2 This reached something of a crescendo during the reign of Catherine the Great. Indeed, we ind that among the oficer class in the Russian navy during the eighteenth century there were admirals of all classes, as well as ships’ captains, lieutenants and numerous other oficers and men.3 Impressive as the sheer numbers of Scottish admirals in Russian service is, there is seldom an opportunity to see them in the context of wider maritime migration. And this is crucial, for without such an overview, we could ind ourselves constructing one of those uncritical histories which might over-celebrate the importance of these men and the relevance of their migration to Russia. That is not to say that they are not to be celebrated, or indeed that they were not important. It simply reiterates the obvious historical point which requires us to take a step back and view our subject matter in a different way.

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 Abstract The thesis deals with the creation of a ‘public’ in St Petersburg during the first half of the eighteenth century. The term ‘public’ has generated a considerable historiography dealing with its implications for the field of eighteenth-century studies, which are discussed in the introduction along with the contemporary definitions of the word. In eighteenth-century Russia, the term ‘public’ usually carried the meaning of ‘audience’, typically in reference to the theatre and other spectacles. The definition of this and other similar terms provides an important framework through which to analyse the various elements of this phenomenon. This analysis has centred on the city of St Petersburg in this period for several reasons. Firstly, it was the seat of both the Russian government and the Court around a decade after its foundation and Peter I ensured its rapid population.
