    Four-masted barque PEKING - shifting Wewelfsfleth to Hamburg - September 2020 After 88 Years - Four-masted Barque PEKING Back In Her Homeport Hamburg Four-masted barque PEKING - shifting Wewelfsfleth to Hamburg - September 2020 On February 25, 1911 - 109 years ago - the four-masted barque PEKING was launched for the Hamburg ship- ping company F. Laeisz at the Blohm & Voss shipyard in Hamburg. The 115-metres long, and 14.40 metres wide cargo sailing ship had no engine, and was robustly constructed for transporting saltpetre from the Chilean coast to European ports. The ship owner’s tradition of naming their ships with words beginning with the letter “P”, as well as these ships’ regular fast voyages, had sailors all over the world call the Laeisz sailing ships “Flying P-Liners”. The PEKING is part of this legendary sailing ship fleet, together with a few other survivors, such as her sister ship PASSAT, the POMMERN and PADUA, the last of the once huge fleet which still is in active service as the sail training ship KRUZENSHTERN. Before she was sold to England in 1932 as stationary training ship and renamed ARETHUSA, the PEKING passed Cape Horn 34 times, which is respected among seafarers because of its often stormy weather. In 1975 the four-master, renamed PEKING, was sold to the USA to become a museum ship near the Brooklyn Bridge in Manhattan. There the old ship quietly rusted away until 2016 due to the lack of maintenance. -Af ter returning to Germany in very poor condition in 2017 with the dock ship COMBI DOCK III, the PEKING was meticulously restored in the Peters Shipyard in Wewelsfleth to the condition she was in as a cargo sailing ship at the end of the 1920s.

The Danish Maritime Accident Investigation Board The Danish Maritime Accident Investigation Board is an independent unit under the Ministry of Business and Growth that carries out investigations as an impartial unit which is, organizationally and legally, independent of other parties. The board investigates maritime accidents and occupa- tional accidents on Danish and Greenlandic merchant and fishing ships as well as accidents on foreign merchant ships in Danish and Greenlandic waters. The Danish Maritime Accident Investigation Board investigates about 140 accidents annually. In case of very serious accidents, such as deaths and losses, or in case of other special circum- stances, either a marine accident report or a summary report is published depending on the extent and complexity of the events. The investigations The investigations are carried out separate from the criminal investigation without having used le- gal evidence procedures and with no other basic aim than learning about accidents with the pur- pose of preventing future accidents. Consequently, any use of this report for other purposes may lead to erroneous or misleading interpretations.

It was distributed as a sort of propaganda targeted at a Japanese audience—the plates depict scenes including the Mukden or Manchurian Incident; the signing of the founding of the Manchukuo state; Emperor Pu-yi and his visit to Japan; the Kwantung army and its leading officers; government offices; elementary school education; the Manchukuo central bank and its currency; railroads; the postal system; agriculture; fisheries; salt production; street scenes in Harbin with signage in Japanese, English, Chinese and Russian; monuments to martyrs; the Great Wall; marriages; funerals; and also texts of the national anthem of Manchukuo and documents regarding Japanese-Manchukuo friendship and solidarity. Soderstrom 2011 ABSTRACT This dissertation examines the lives, works, and careers of Peter Andreevich Slovtsov (1767-1843) and Ivan Timofeevich Kalashnikov (1797-1863). Known today largely for their roles as Siberian “firsts”—Slovtsov as Siberia‟s first native-born historian, Kalashnikov as Siberia‟s first native-born novelist—their names often appear in discussions of the origins of Siberian regionalism, a movement of the later nineteenth century that decried Siberia‟s “colonial” treatment by the tsarist state and called for greater autonomy for the region. Drawing on a wide range of archival materials— including two decades of correspondence between the two men—this study shows that Slovtsov and Kalashnikov, far from being disgruntled critics of the tsarist state, were its proud agents. They identified with their service careers, I suggest, because they believed that autocratic rule was the best system for Russia and because serving the tsarist state provided what they saw as their greatest opportunity to participate in a progressive, world-historical saga of enlightenment. Their understanding of this saga and its Russian reverberations gave form and content to their senses of self.     MARITIME HERITAGE The Never Ending Story of Marijan Žuvić Training Ships Marijan Žuvić TEACHING ON THE WAVES: THE GERMAN SAILS The history of training ships in the world of navigation, The Never Ending Story of both merchant and naval, is a never ending story. From the age Training Ships of sails, through the days of steam and motor propulsion to the most sophisticated vessels of 21st century there were so many ships of all sizes and shapes used as schools on the waves. To make a choice and declare ‘the most famous training ships’ is the mission impossible and so this author doesn’t dare to do such a selection. Training ships are not only the essential part of world-wide shipping but also one of the most interesting. The conclusion of a search through the author’s huge personnel archives the author is that the major role in the entire history of training on the high seas belongs to Germans. As this fact is not widely accepted and German importance and influence is not recognized even in the maritime community it is worth to be presented in ToMS. It is generally accepted that the first training vessel in the world was the British ship ‘Marine Society’. She was former merchantman ‘Beatty’ purchased in 1786 by London-based Marine Society. There is no doubt that Society, founded in 1756 by Jonas Hanway, was the world pioneer in training boys for seafaring duties, but the ship ‘Marine Society’ never sailed and spent her entire career moored between Deptford and Herzogin Cecilie.
