HISTORY From the 13th through the 17th Century, more than 900 monumental statues, moai, were erected on the Polynesian island Rapa Nui, also known as Easter Island. Depositional Patterns Constrained by Slope Topography Changes On
www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Depositional patterns constrained by slope topography changes on seamounts Dewen Du1,2,3*, Shijuan Yan1, Gang Yang1, Fengdeng Shi1, Zhiwei Zhu1, Qinglei Song1, Fengli Yang1, Yingchun Cui1 & Xuefa Shi1 Slope topography is known to control the spatial distribution of deposits on intraplate seamounts; however, relatively little is known about how slope topography changes constrain those depositional patterns. In this study, we analyse data on four lithotypes found on seamount slopes, including colloidal chemical deposits comprising mainly cobalt-rich crusts, and examine the relationships between the spatial distribution of these lithotypes and current slope topography. We use these relationships to discuss depositional patterns constrained by slope topography changes. Some depositional units in drill core samples are interpreted to have resulted from past topographic changes that created the current slope topography. Two or more types of deposits that accumulated at the same location implies that the slope topography changed over time and that the depositional patterns on seamount slopes are constrained by changes in slope topography. Seamounts are frst-order deep-sea morphological elements 1 and have important oceanographic research value. Cobalt-rich crust deposits that may contain several strategic metals and thus be considered mineral resources are widely distributed on seamount slopes2–5. Terefore, many scientists have surveyed and explored seamounts since the 1980s6–9, acquiring a large amount of data and knowledge on seamounts. However, some questions, such as how topographical changes to seamounts constrain depositional patterns on their slopes and how to interpret depositional sequences in sections of shallow drill samples taken from seamount slopes, remain unanswered. -

Policy Paper The Underlying Causes of Morocco-Spain Maritime Dispute off the Atlantic Coast By Samir Bennis 27 January 2020 Introduction The question of the delimitation of maritime boundaries between Morocco and Spain has always been a hot topic in the relations between the two countries. Because of the complexity of the issue and its legal and political ramifications, there are no formal maritime boundaries between Morocco and Spain, whether in the Mediterranean or off the Atlantic coast. The existence of a territorial dispute between Morocco and Spain over the Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla is just one of the factors at play that have made it impossible for the two countries to reach an agreement on the delimitation of their maritime boundaries in the Mediterranean. In waters off the Atlantic coast, however, the main bone of contention is the delimitation of the two countries’ respective Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZ) and their continental shelves. The existence of an overlap between Rabat and Madrid’s continental shelves, as well as their diverging views on which method should govern the delimitation process has doomed all attempts by the two countries to delimit their respective maritime boundaries to failure. While Spain calls for the application of the method of equidistance and median line, Morocco calls for the application of the method of equity, and stresses that any delimitation should result in an equitable outcome, in line with international law. What has made negotiations between the two countries more arduous is the fact that the overlap between their continental shelves lies in the water off the Sahara, which have been under Morocco’s de facto sovereignty since 1975. -

Four-masted barque PEKING - shifting Wewelfsfleth to Hamburg - September 2020 After 88 Years - Four-masted Barque PEKING Back In Her Homeport Hamburg Four-masted barque PEKING - shifting Wewelfsfleth to Hamburg - September 2020 On February 25, 1911 - 109 years ago - the four-masted barque PEKING was launched for the Hamburg ship- ping company F. Laeisz at the Blohm & Voss shipyard in Hamburg. The 115-metres long, and 14.40 metres wide cargo sailing ship had no engine, and was robustly constructed for transporting saltpetre from the Chilean coast to European ports. The ship owner’s tradition of naming their ships with words beginning with the letter “P”, as well as these ships’ regular fast voyages, had sailors all over the world call the Laeisz sailing ships “Flying P-Liners”. The PEKING is part of this legendary sailing ship fleet, together with a few other survivors, such as her sister ship PASSAT, the POMMERN and PADUA, the last of the once huge fleet which still is in active service as the sail training ship KRUZENSHTERN. Before she was sold to England in 1932 as stationary training ship and renamed ARETHUSA, the PEKING passed Cape Horn 34 times, which is respected among seafarers because of its often stormy weather. In 1975 the four-master, renamed PEKING, was sold to the USA to become a museum ship near the Brooklyn Bridge in Manhattan. There the old ship quietly rusted away until 2016 due to the lack of maintenance. -Af ter returning to Germany in very poor condition in 2017 with the dock ship COMBI DOCK III, the PEKING was meticulously restored in the Peters Shipyard in Wewelsfleth to the condition she was in as a cargo sailing ship at the end of the 1920s. -

The Danish Maritime Accident Investigation Board The Danish Maritime Accident Investigation Board is an independent unit under the Ministry of Business and Growth that carries out investigations as an impartial unit which is, organizationally and legally, independent of other parties. The board investigates maritime accidents and occupa- tional accidents on Danish and Greenlandic merchant and fishing ships as well as accidents on foreign merchant ships in Danish and Greenlandic waters. The Danish Maritime Accident Investigation Board investigates about 140 accidents annually. In case of very serious accidents, such as deaths and losses, or in case of other special circum- stances, either a marine accident report or a summary report is published depending on the extent and complexity of the events. The investigations The investigations are carried out separate from the criminal investigation without having used le- gal evidence procedures and with no other basic aim than learning about accidents with the pur- pose of preventing future accidents. Consequently, any use of this report for other purposes may lead to erroneous or misleading interpretations. -

This water-rock interaction is caused by circulating seawater and controls the chemical exchange in submarine and sub-seafloor rocks and also plays a major role in determining the final composition of these submarine rocks. This investigation is designed to evaluate the (i) degree of alteration and element mobility, (ii) to identify relations between alteration types and (iii) to characterise the chemical processes that take place during seafloor and sub-seafloor alteration in the Central Atlantic region. The investigated submarine rocks are typically altered and comprise calcite and clay minerals in addition to original magmatic feldspar, olivine, pyroxene, quartz, biotite, and amphibole. -
Testing Traditional Land Divisions on Rapa Nui
Martinsson-Wallin and Wallin: Studies in Global Archaeology no. 20 SPATIAL PERSPECTIVES ON CEREMONIAL COMPLEXES: TESTING TRADITIONAL LAND DIVISIONS ON RAPA NUI Helene Martinsson-Wallin and Paul Wallin Department of Archaeology and Ancient History, Uppsala University, Campus Gotland, Sweden [email protected] [email protected] Abstract: The ceremonial sites of Rapa Nui, the ahu, are complex structures that incorporate and display a variety of distinctions and social relationships tied to different land areas that belonged to senior and junior groups. Such distinctions will be analysed via a Correspondence Analysis using selected ahu structures and connected variables. A detailed case study of two ahu in the La Perouse area will focus on the organisation of the variety of prehistoric material expressions connected to these. The aim is to show how habitus works in a local context at the individual organizational level. Through these studies we highlight the complex relationships involved in creating a milieu, in which actors of different groups carry out their practices when creating monuments and organising place. INTRODUCTION Rapa Nui, also known as Easter Island, is geographically the most isolated island in the world (Figure 1). Yet it was found and populated by Polynesian seafarers in prehistoric times (Martinsson-Wallin and Crockford 2002: 256). Prior to archaeological investigations there were several ideas, generally based on genealogies, about when and by whom the island was originally settled. Since there are several versions of genealogical accounts, and their chronological reliability is uncertain, these traditions are difficult to use when discussing temporal issues (Martinsson-Wallin 1994: 76). -

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS 1 Keynote 1 From Maoritanga to Matauranga: Indigenous Knowledge Discourses Linda Tuhiwai Smith (NMM, Cinema) _______________________________________________________________________________ My talk examines the current fascination with matauranga Maori in policy and curriculum. I am interested in the way academic discourses have shifted dramatically to encompass Maori interests and ways of understanding knowledge. I explore some aspects of the development of different approaches to Maori in the curriculum and track the rising interest in matauranga (traditional Maori knowledge) through a period of neoliberal approaches to curriculum in our education system and measurement of research excellence. The Performance Based Research Fund recognises matauranga Maori as a field of research, Government research funds ascribe to a Vision Matauranga policy which must be addressed in all contestable research funds and there are qualifications, majors and subject papers which teach matauranga Maori at tertiary level. New Zealand leads the world in terms of incorporating indigenous knowledge, language and culture into curriculum. Most of the named qualifications are accredited through the New Zealand Qualifications Authority, which then owns the intellectual property of the curriculum. Maori individuals clearly play a significant role in developing the curriculum and resources. They are mostly motivated by wanting to provide a Maori-friendly and relevant curriculum. However, Maori people are also concerned more widely about cultural
