Music Transition Work June 2021

For each subject you will receive a detailed introduction to allow full transition into the college and your new learning. Please complete the weekly tasks outlined below and attend the meet sessions with the teachers for further guidance and information. Please keep all work created in a folder to present to me in the first lesson in September.

Reading List (2 hours): Please read through the attached booklet on the Classical period. Highlight any key points and anything you do not understand. Task 2 Haydn Research the life and music of Franz Josef Haydn. You can use the Oxford Music Online Haydn, Haydn Wikipedia article, Classic FM, Philharmonia Haydn introduction, Naxos, BBC introduction, BBC Composer of the Week and Howard Goodall on Haydn. You can then present your work in any way you like. Task 3 The Rise of Use the following resources to research the rise of the symphony. the Symphony Watch the videos and consider how the symphony links in with the 1 time periods you have already studied.

Using the attached sheet ‘short history of music’ choose 2 contrasting symphonies from the ’50 greatest symphonies’ document. Read the information about these symphonies and the reviews they received at the time and answer the questions on your worksheet regarding your opinions on these styles.

Task 4 Musical Write an account about the development of the musical from 1950 to the Theatre 1 present day. Your research should look mainly at the work of: , Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim, Claude-Michel Schönberg, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Stephen Schwartz. Present this in any way that suits you. Summer Composition Write a simple classical theme. Visit the following site and follow the Tasks (6 guidelines given, work through the 4 stages. hours) Either write it for string quartet or for a melody instrument with piano chords in Sibelius, Noteflight, Musescore or on manuscript paper. If you can record any of your ideas then do so.

Performance: You should continue to ensure that you are practising your instrument/s and/or voice regularly and working on repertoire to challenge you. You are aiming for at least Grade 6. Please record yourself playing one of your current pieces and attach to the google classroom assignment by September. Also send a copy of your sheet music (do not worry if there is no accompaniment part).
