Inspiration Choir Southampton and Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra present The Great British Sing Saturday 6 April 2019, 7.30pm

Music Director: Pete Harrison Signer: Katherine Mount WELCOME

Welcome to Inspiration Choir’s spring concert. We’re celebrating the very best of British musicians, from our classical giants (Benjamin Britten, Hubert Parry & Karl Jenkins) through theatre composers (, Gilbert & Sullivan, Willy Russell & Andrew Lloyd Webber), moving swiftly on to Howard Goodall and John Rutter, then right up to date with Elton John and Gary Barlow. What a journey – but such is life in Inspiration Choir! We’ve worked hard to master the different styles, from For more information: the beautiful lyrical classical lines of Rutter’s ‘The Lord www.peteharrison.biz Bless You And Keep You’ to the power of Jenkins’ @PeteBHarrison ‘Sanctus’, before moving to Willy Russell’s city of Liverpool (Blood Brothers) and then the story of Simba the Lion in Elton John’s great score to ‘The Lion King’. We’ve had great fun rehearsing and preparing for tonight’s concert. We might even have had the occasional ‘bake-off’ during rehearsals, just to keep our strength up..! Our next ‘Open Evening’ rehearsal is on Wednesday, 1 May 2019. Inspiration Choir is open to everyone, so if you fancy coming along to have a look and see what we’re all about, then please do come and join us at Richard Taunton College starting at 7.15pm. No pressure or commitment, but a fun evening guaranteed! Pete Harrison, Inspiration Southampton Music Director

After the whizz-bang fireworks of our last concert, this term has taken us down a completely different route. We have been working on another side of choral singing, while exploring the music of British composers.

We have been concentrating on beauty of line and tone, with emphasis on legato (smooth) singing, always with our usual presence and communication, but applied to a different genre of music. This has always been part of our singing but to concentrate on it in such a way has been lovely.

It also chimes in very well with Inspiration’s upcoming tour to Rome, where we will take a large proportion of this concert.

We hope you enjoy this beautiful concert – with a few surprises of course – don’t we always?

Gary Griffiths, Inspiration Music Director and Founder

About Gary… I have been singing for as long as I can remember. Wolverhampton Grammar School was my major musical influence – School Choir, Choral Society, Musical Theatre Group, Jazz Band – alongside the Youth Orchestra and the Concert Band.

When it came to University it had to be music, and so to York. Three wonderful years of music making also included being Chorus Master for York Light Opera and MD for Pickering Musical Society.

I then became a tenor in the Choir of York Minster with all that entails; daily services as well as many world tours, concerts and recordings. After 18 years, I left and became part of the creative team behind the formation of SingLive.

Now, with Inspiration as my sole focus, I really do have my dream job. Weekly rehearsals and trips around the country and abroad are a joy. INSPIRATION SOUTHAMPTON SINGERS

SPOTLIGHT When I was young I used to sing in the church choir HELENA and did a bit of singing at school. Most of my working KURCZYNSKA career has involved working in the voluntary sector and most recently I used to manage a hostel for 57 homeless men and women. I had been thinking about joining a choir for a number of years but couldn’t find one that looked right for me. I thought it would be good outlet, a stress reliever from working in a challenging environment, even though I absolutely loved my job. I then saw an advert for Inspiration in the local paper and went along to an open evening. That was it! I was hooked; at last I had found what I was looking for.

What kind of music do you most enjoy singing? I enjoy singing all songs but especially the ‘pop’ versions like ‘Mr Blue Sky’. Helena Kurczynska lives in Southampton. She used to If you could sing anywhere in the world, work in the voluntary sector where would it be? homeless services. If I could sing anywhere it would be a free concert Helena has been with at the Royal Albert Hall for people who are homeless Inspiration Southampton or on state benefits. They do not get many since 2015. opportunities to listen to choirs or attend concerts. I know they would love to hear the Inspiration.

What’s your favourite highlight since joining Inspiration? The highlight for me is having Pete as our Music Director. He is amazing, a ‘real inspiration’ and we are very fortunate to have him as our Music Director.

How does singing make you feel? Singing makes me feel very happy!

What would you say to anyone unsure about trying singing as a hobby? I would highly recommend singing to anyone, it’s a great way to meet new people and have fun at the same time! BREAK A LEG! FROM THE CAST AND CREW OF THE 2019 BLOOD BROTHERS TOUR
