Volume: II, Issue: III ISSN: 2581-5628 An International Peer-Reviewed Open GAP INTERDISCIPLINARITIES - Access Journal of Interdisciplinary Studies LITTLE MAGAZINES IN INDIA AND EMERGENCE OF DALIT LITERATURE Dr. Preeti Oza St. Andrew‘s College Mumbai University [email protected] INTRODUCTION As encyclopaedia Britannica defines: ―Little Magazine is any of various small, usually avant-garde periodicals devoted to serious literary writings.‖ The name signifies most of all a usually non-commercial manner of editing, managing, and financing. They were published from 1880 through much of the 20th century and flourished in the U.S. and England, though French and German writers also benefited from them. HISTORY Literary magazines or ‗small magazines‘ are traced back in the UK since the 1800s. Americas had North American Review (founded in 1803) and the Yale Review(1819). In the 20th century: Poetry Magazine, published in Chicago from 1912, has grown to be one of the world‘s most well-regarded journals. The number of small magazines rapidly increased when the th independent Printing Press originated in the mid 20 century. Small magazines also encouraged substantial literary influence. It provided a very good space for the marginalised, the new and the uncommon. And that finally became the agenda of all small magazines, no matter where in the world they are published: To promote literature — in a broad, all- encompassing sense of the word — through poetry, short fiction, essays, book reviews, literary criticism and biographical profiles and interviews of authors. Little magazines heralded a change in literary sensibility and in the politics of literary taste. They also promoted alternative perspectives to politics, culture, and society. -

INTRODUCTION: It is not possible for each and every citizen to visit different states of India to see their culture and traditions. In Maharashtra, almost all kind of religious diversity are found like Gujrat, South India, Paris and many more. Like every state has it’s speciality, similar Maharashtra has too. When we talk about Maharashtra how can we forget about Maharashtrian people. MAHARASHTRIAN CULTURE: Hindu Marathi people celebrate several festivals during the year. These include Gudi Padwa, Ram Navami, Hanuman Jayanti, Narali Pournima, Mangala Gaur, Janmashtami, Ganeshotsav, Kojagiri Purnima, Makar Sankranti, Diwali, Khandoba Festival, Shivaratri and Holi. Maharashtra had huge influence over India under the 17th-century king Shivaji of the Maratha Empire and his concept of Hindavi Swarajya which translates to self-rule of people. It also has a long history of Marathi saints of Varakari religious movement such as Dnyaneshwar , Namdev , Chokhamela, Eknath and Tukaram which forms the one of bases of the culture of Maharashtra or Marathi culture. FAMOUS FESTIVALS OF MAHARASHTRA: 1. NAG PANCHAMI- Nag Panchali is celebrated in the honour of the Snake God Shesha Nag on the fifth day of the holy month of Shravan. 2. GUDI PADWA- Gudi Padwa is a symbol of victory, characterized by a bamboo stick with a silk cloth. It is garlanded with flowers and has sweets offered to it. 3. NARALI POURNIMA- ‘Narali’ means coconut and ‘pournima' is the full- moon day when offerings of coconuts are made to the Sea- God on this day. -

The Portuguese, Dutch, French and the English came to India to promote trade and commerce. The English who established the East-India Co. in 1600, gradually consolidated their hold in different parts of India. They had very capable men like Sir. Thomas Roe, Colonel Close, General Smith, Elphinstone, Grant Duff etc . The English shrewdly exploited the disunity among the Indian rulers. They were very diplomatic in their approach. Due to their far sighted policies, the English were able to expand and consolidate their rule in Maharashtra. 2 The Company’s government had trapped most of the Maratha rulers in Subsidiary Alliances and fought three important wars with Marathas over a period of 43 years (1775 -1818). 1.2 POLITICAL CONDITIONS BEFORE THE BRITISH CONQUEST : The Company’s Directors sent Lord Wellesley as the Governor- General of the Company’s territories in India, in 1798. -

Herdu 2, Trnava, Slovakia History of medieval Deccan is marked by the political dominance of Muslims. Ethnically incoherent ruling Muslim nobility participated in the creation of the kingdom of Bahmanls with the assistance of the indigenous aristocracy. The process of establishment of the independent regional state is often viewed negatively by local authors. This paper aims to show the inadequacy of such standpoint using the example of the theory named “The Dark Age of Marathi Literature”. When the representatives of foreign religion subdue a country, whose reli gion seems to be the very opposite, as the representatives of Islam had found the religion in India the very opposite to the strong Islamic monotheism, such event could not pass without any conflict altogether. But it does not mean that the conflict became prevalent feature of the medieval life. In the medieval period, anywhere in the world, the conquest was the means of the state’s economic poli cy. It would be a mistake to view the shifts of power during the medieval times as unacceptable threat to human liberty, for that is wherefrom the liberalism of present times evolved. Moreover the modern communalism by claiming the rights for “some” again reverted to the conquest of the “other’s lands”. The destruction caused by Muslim invaders to India and the rules imposed by the sultans are often perceived much worse than the historical facts can suggest. -

Abhanga MeLa Sant TukA - 2003 Sant TukArAm [By Thiruvaiyaru Krishnan] Little is known of the life of TukArAm, who was born in 1608 in the village of Dehu on the banks of the river IndrayAni into a low-caste [known as Soodra] family. Since it was common in Maharashtra at that time for the Brahmins to refer to all non-Brahmins as "Soodras", it is not commonly realized that TukArAm’s family were landowners, and that they made their living by selling the produce of the land. TukArAm’s father had inherited the position of mahajan, or collector of revenue from traders, from his father, and TukArAm in turn was the mahajan of his village Dehu. At a relatively young age, owing to the death of his parents, TukArAm took charge of the family, and before he was twenty-one years old TukArAm had fathered six children. The devastating famine of 1629 carried away TukArAm’s first wife and some of his children, and TukArAm henceforth lost interest in the life of the householder. Though he did not quite forsake his family, he was unable to maintain his second wife or children, and was ultimately reduced to penury and bankruptcy, besides being stripped by the village of his position as mahajan. In the meantime, TukArAm turned to poetic compositions [abhangs], inspired by his devotion for Lord Vithoba [Vitthal], the family deity. He is said to have been visited in a dream by Namdev, a great poet-saint of the thirteenth century, and Lord Vitthal himself, and apparently was informed that it was his mission to compose abhangs. -

EXPERIENTIAL SHAPING OF PUBLIC SPACE DURING PILGRIMAGE: THE ALANDI-PANDHARPUR PALKHI PRAJAKTA SANE A thesis submitted in fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Architecture Postgraduate Board University of New South Wales March 2007 Abstract Space perceived and experienced through movement presents an interesting array of imagery which blends together to form a comprehensive whole. My thesis explores this dimension of spatial complexity through the public ritual of pilgrimage. This profound and deeply significant human activity connects the individual places to form an integrated sacred network. The practice of pilgrimage has developed over centuries across the globe and continues to grow and influence a huge cross section of society to come together and move en-masse towards religious centres and personal enlightenment. Public spaces demand a simultaneous co-existence of people, activities and their setting. The phenomenon of pilgrimage is central to the public realm. Its study involves an intricate layering of beliefs, customs, traditions and religion which collectively govern the people-space relationship. The transformation of a space to a place, from static to dynamic, from passive to active occurs during this activity, maintaining the traditional usage while simultaneously evolving as a product of interaction between people, rituals and spaces. In this thesis, I examine the experiential shaping of space which occurs through pilgrims’ activities and their impacts on the given urban and architectural conditions. The research is based on my study of the Alandi-Pandharpur Pilgrimage in India. It is an outcome of my participation in the ritual as, both, an architect and a pilgrim. -
