On 4 September 2014, the 5th semester students of Mechanical Engineering Department, CUFE were brought out of their routine classes to be taken for an Industrial Visit to Krishna Raja Sagara Dam, Mysore. Krishna Raja Sagara, also popularly known as KRS, is the name of both a lake and the dam that creates it. It is located close to the settlement of Krishnarajasagara. The dam is across Kaveri River, in Mandya District near Mysore in Karnataka state, India. There is an ornamental garden attached to the dam, called Brindavan Gardens. Under the supervision of Dr. Shankar V. , Dr. Rathnakar G. , Prof. AngadNaik , Prof. Darshan S and Prof. Jennifer R., 101 students divided in two buses left for the dam at 6.30 AM from the campus. Once on reaching the destination, students were allowed on an exclusive entry onto the pathway over the dam paving over 2.5 km. The working of the opening and closing of the flood gates and their mechanisms were explained in detail. The dam which was built in 1924 and functional by 1932, spans over 3.5 km and has a catchment area of 10619 sq.km. At the end of the pathway students were lead to the power generation house nearby which derived power from the head difference of water from the dam. It housed two Kaplan Turbines of 6 MW capacity each. Apart from the power generation application, the dam is also the major source of irrigation in the fertile lands of Mysore and Mandya. It also provides drinking water supply for Mysore and large parts of Bangalore. It is also a major source of water supply for the state of Tamil Nadu. The whole experience was indeed an enlightening one.
