9. South India Fertility Project: Karnataka T V Sekher and K N M Raju With fertility decline reaching all the continents, human societies in the developing world are passing through an irreversible phase in their demographic history. This decline, which illustrates the second phase of the demographic transition following the inception of mortality decline, is a product of important transformations affecting households and their economic functioning in a society undergoing rapid changes. South India represents one of the regions in the developing world where fertility decline has been the most spectacular, with the average number of children per women approaching the replacement.26 level. Demographic transition in South India has now clearly entered its last phase and the decrease of birth rates, presently steeper than that of death rates, has resulted in an overall decline of natural increase. However, in view of the mediocre level of economic development in this part of the country, the South Indian experience has revived the discussion on the determinants of fertility reduction, notably about the respective roles played by endogenous factors such as cultural and historical features and by exogenous factors such as economic transformations and governmental interventions in family planning. This project is aimed at understanding the channels of fertility decline through the analysis of socio-cultural and spatial differentials. Objectives, Methodology and Scope of the Study The aim of the project is the analysis of the social and economic dimension of demographic change through the study of spatial heterogeneity of fertility in South India, with two central objectives —description and interpretation of fertility transition in South India, in order to contribute to a global synthesis on current population dynamics in developing countries. -

It is observed during the study that many dyeing, sugar and paper units discharged their untreated effluent into the river Cauvery in this criminately without any treatment. The river water samples and ground water samples and soil sample collected in the study area reveals that high degree of the pollution cost by untreated effluent of heavy metal analysis from the river water and ground water and soil. So that industries major culprit in damaging the river water, ground water and soil used for the agricultural purpose. The increased loading of toxic effluent day by day due to the toxic effluent of surface water, ground water and soil. The total pollution due to industrial effluent causes the great damage to the environmental pollution of river Cauvery at pallipalayam in Namakkal district. Geologically they are much older than die Oanga, Indus and Brahmaputra rivers of Northen India. Shiva’s Waterfront Temples: Reimagining the Sacred Architecture of India’s Deccan Region Subhashini Kaligotla Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2015 © 2015 Subhashini Kaligotla All rights reserved ABSTRACT Shiva’s Waterfront Temples: Reimagining the Sacred Architecture of India’s Deccan Region Subhashini Kaligotla This dissertation examines Deccan India’s earliest surviving stone constructions, which were founded during the 6th through the 8th centuries and are known for their unparalleled formal eclecticism. Whereas past scholarship explains their heterogeneous formal character as an organic outcome of the Deccan’s “borderland” location between north India and south India, my study challenges the very conceptualization of the Deccan temple within a binary taxonomy that recognizes only northern and southern temple types. Rejecting the passivity implied by the borderland metaphor, I emphasize the role of human agents—particularly architects and makers—in establishing a dialectic between the north Indian and the south Indian architectural systems in the Deccan’s built worlds and built spaces. Secondly, by adopting the Deccan temple cluster as an analytical category in its own right, the present work contributes to the still developing field of landscape studies of the premodern Deccan. I read traditional art-historical evidence—the built environment, sculpture, and stone and copperplate inscriptions—alongside discursive treatments of landscape cultures and phenomenological and experiential perspectives. As a result, I am able to present hitherto unexamined aspects of the cluster’s spatial arrangement: the interrelationships between structures and the ways those relationships influence ritual and processional movements, as well as the symbolic, locative, and organizing role played by water bodies. -

Day 2 The city of Hyderabad was constructed in 1591 by King Hyderabad Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah of the Qutb Shahi dynasty, which ruled this region of the Deccan plateau from 1507 to 1687. During this time, the Sultanate faced numerous incursions by the Mughals and the Hindu Marathas. In 1724, the Mughal governor of the Deccan arrived to govern the city. His official title was the Nizam- ul-Muluk, or Administrator of the Realm. After the death of Emperor Aurangzeb, he declared his independence and established the Asaf Jahi dynasty of Nizams. The Nizams of Hyderabad were known for their tremendous wealth, which came from precious gems mined in nearby Golconda (see Day 3), the area's natural resources, a vibrant pearl trade, agricultural taxes and friendly cooperation with the British. Much of the architecture still existing in Hyderabad thus dates from the reigns of the Qutb Shahi Sultans or the Nizams. European influences were introduced by the British in the 19th and 20th centuries. At the center of old Hyderabad sits the Charminar, or "four towers," which dates to 1591 and is surrounded by a lively bazaar and numerous mosques and palaces. This morning we will enjoy a leisurely walk through the area. We will stop to admire the colorful tile mosaics found inside the Badshahi Ashurkhana. This Royal House of Mourning was built in 1595 as a congregation hall for Shia Muslims during Muharram. -

Mysore Tourist attractions Mysore is the second largest city in the state of Karnataka, India. The name Mysore is an anglicised version of Mahishnjru, which means the abode of Mahisha. Mahisha stands for Mahishasura, a demon from the Hindu mythology. The city is spread across an area of 128.42 km² (50 sq mi) and is situated at the base of the Chamundi Hills. Mysore Palace : is a palace situated in the city. It was the official residence of the former royal family of Mysore, and also housed the durbar (royal offices).The term "Palace of Mysore" specifically refers to one of these palaces, Amba Vilas. Brindavan Gardens is a show garden that has a beautiful botanical park, full of exciting fountains, as well as boat rides beneath the dam. Diwans of Mysore planned and built the gardens in connection with the construction of the dam. Display items include a musical fountain. Various biological research departments are housed here. There is a guest house for tourists.It is situated at Krishna Raja Sagara (KRS) dam. Jaganmohan Palace : was built in the year 1861 by Krishnaraja Wodeyar III in a predominantly Hindu style to serve as an alternate palace for the royal family. This palace housed the royal family when the older Mysore Palace was burnt down by a fire. The palace has three floors and has stained glass shutters and ventilators. It has housed the Sri Jayachamarajendra Art Gallery since the year 1915. The collections exhibited here include paintings from the famed Travancore ruler, Raja Ravi Varma, the Russian painter Svetoslav Roerich and many paintings of the Mysore painting style. -
