BECOME A LIFE MEMBER 17 Continued from page 16 publicizing the 1952 Winter Olympic Games in Oslo. The handstamp reads "Holmenkollbakken/Oct 1, 1952". I have tried to find the town of Holmenkollbakken In the atlas, but cannot. The closest I have come is Holmenkollen. Can you explain It? A-7 The Norwegian Tourest Office of New York explains that Holmenkol- lan is the area where the skiing events took place during the 1952 Winter Olympic Games. The word "bakken" means ski jump in Norwegian. The first day cover you have was oosted first day of Issue from a oost office underneath the ski jump at Holmenkollen. Beneath the photographic cachet of your cover are the words "Holmenkollbakken/ Foreningen til Ski-Idrettens Fremme, Oslo". The cover was Issued by The Association for Ski Sports, Oslo. Q-8 A cancel was used by Austria for the 1936 Berlin Games which reads "Kauft Olympia-Lose" which I interpret to mean "Buy Olympic Lottery". Judith Holmes, In her book "Olympiad-1936", mentions the fact that one of the means of financing the Berlin 1936 Games was by a lottery. Were the Austrlans, by this cancel urging Austrlans to sub scribe to this German lottery or did they have an Austrian lottery of their own? Q-Q What country issued the first Olympic stamp to picture a female athlete on it? Q-10 Turkey issued a se-tenant set July 20, 1967 picturing Pierre de Coubertin on one stamp and Sellm Slrri Tarcan on the other stamp. Who was -Sellm Slrri Tarcan and what was his relationship to the Olympic movement. Q-ll What wrestling hold is illustrated on the Hungarian issue dated Aug. 21, 1968?

+++++++++++++++++++SUNTRAPEX '75 - Barb de Viollni++++++++++++++++++++ SUNTRAPEX will be held November 15-16 this year. Now is the time for all of you to give some thought to entering and let me know. This year, because of the lack of interest by the Sports and Olympic col lectors, the show will be an All Topical and Thematic exhibit. It will show all types of material instead of just Scouts and our field. Please drop me a line, if you would like to give some thought to ex hibiting and I will see that a prosoectus Is sent to you when they are printed. When you fill out your prospectus you will be asked if your exhibit is Topical or Thematic. The difference is this: if the ex hibit falls into the on stamps, i.e., dogs, Red Cross, Boy Scouts, etc., it Is Topical. If you are telling a story or showing the history of something: The History of Soccer in the Olympic Games It should be in the Thematic division. If you make a mistake, the Judges will reclassify it mentally for your benefit. We have two exhibits scheduled in 1976 where the SFI Trophy will be awarded. One In Rockford, 111. where there will be a Sports and Oly mpic section and in Toronto, International Sports, devoted entirely to Snorts and Olympics. PLEASE LET ME HERE FROM YCU ON ALL THESE EX HIBITS and a prospectus will be sent to you when they are printed. 18 RESEARCH STUDY GROUP PROGRESS REPORT • Sherwin Podolsky John Torney, P.O. Box 4l7, Los Alamitos, CA 90720 would like to hear from collectors of Olympic "hardware" such as medals, pins, bad ges, porcelainware, flags and similar Olympic memorabilia. Maybe John can start a study group project on this. Write him direct. Due to the enormous amount of material that is available for the 1932 Olympic Games to be published, the Board of Directors have de cided that it is not feasible to publish this in JSP. The Board of Directors have decided instead to publish a separ ate handbook covering all the material that is being researched by the study groups. Current plans are for the handbook to be published in looseleaf format, size 5'fa 8 1/2 so that additional pages may be added later. K-Line Pub. Is checking into selling three ring binders, (7 x 9) with gold stamping at a reasonable price to SPI members. Additional de tails to follow*

Editor. Recently, the international auction house of H.R. Harmer of NYC sold at a speed auction the sports collection formed by the late Judge Levi M. Hall of Minn. Mounted in 25 albums along with thousands of sports covers, this fine collection realized $4500 at auction. Judge Levi apparently liked baseball, this being evident in the many covers with a baseball theme. While there were no great rareties In this collection, it did contain the majority of the sports and Olympic items. Your editor, who Is employed by H.R. Harmer, had the chance to look thru this collection and enjoy its many covers. Sol Salklnd, 3306 Rochambeau Ave., Bronx, NY 10467 has several sets of the Rome Olympic covers for sale. Each set consists of 100 different unaddressed covers featuring men and women athletes In all types of sports with various cancels from the different sites in Rome The cost is $19.75 postpaid. BLACK BLOTS: There were no sports or Olympic stamps "black Blotted" In either the Jan. or Feb. issues of the American Philatelist. Wlnternhelmer, 6501 Schwabenheim, Rosener str. 34, Germany. Apparently this book is printed in German. Send all changes of addresses to the Secretary-Treasurer. 19 The Austrian Administration of Posts and Telegraphs chose a hurd ler to be the subject of the recent 2s value of the series of special postage stamps with sports motifs released Oct. 28, 1970. In view of the fact that Austria's women athletes distinguished themselves through brilliant performances In national and international events during recent years, such a choice seems quite logical. Llese Prokopp, the Austrian winner of the 1968 Olympic pentathlon and many of her fellow-athletes will certainly consider this new commemorative stamp as a sign of honor and appreciation of their exploits. Hurdling in its oresent form is a comparatively young activity in the field of athletics. It developed out of the so-called fencing - a sort of steeplechaslng - that had been practiced in Germany in the l6th and 17th centuries. The barriers in those days were crude sheep hurdles rigidly staked in the ground.

The history of sports indicates that steeplechaslng events were organized in Spain, France and England at the begin ning of the 19th century, and out of these steeple chase races where the competitive distances had been short, the present form of hurdling developed. During the second half of the 19th century races were al ready organized In England, in which standard hurdle helarhts and standardized distances were used. The strange metric and centlmetric indications for the start, the distances between the hurdles and the hurdle height used In modern hurdling make it clear th.at hurdling started In England, as they are the equivalent and metric version of the English Measure (foot and yard). The rules of the "International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF govern the standardized distances for international events. As far as men's events are concerned, the hurdling competition is conducted at 110 meters, 200 meters, 400 meters and 3.000 meters steeplechaslng, whereas the hurdling distances In women's events are 80 meters (rare ly), 100 meters and 200 meters. At the beginning the method of hurdling was very, primitive, the obstacles were cleared by simply Jumping and not sailing over them. Meanwhile the method has been considerably Improved and is nowadays very refined with Its "crouch start", the characteristic "step-over action" and "finish". The most impressive but also mo st difficult moment in hurdling is the "step-over" action, which was chosen as the subject of the new stamp; it displays the "one-arm" f orward thrust" (while raising the lead leg, the characteristic brin ging forward of the trailing leg (bent at the knee at right angles to the body) over the hurdle and the extreme forward lean of the body so to be in a sprinting position for the next steps between the hurdles, After having cleared the hurdle, the athletes try to cut down the leading leg as quickly as possible and take a "sequence of three steps" to the next hurdle. A hurdler has to face hard challenges of fitness and ability; and therefore hurdling might be considered to come within the difficult activities of field athletics. On the other hand, it is one of the most Interesting and exciting events. 20 NEWS OF OUR MEMBERS

There Is a Special Ballot giving a proposition that needs the approval of the general membership. This admendment to the SPI Con stitution is a requirement by the US Internal Revenue Service. Once we have I.R.S. approval as an Educational organization, we will be able to get a second class mailing permit from the USPS. It is essen tial we acquire the second class permit as expenses are now running close to Income. On the reverse side of the Special Ballot, there is another form that is called to your attention. This form is for advance subscrip tion (nt a special pre-publication price for members) for the 1932 Olympic Handbook. This is only a deposit as we do not know how many paia,es there will be when the printing commences later on in the year.
