  • 1 HOWARD: Will Bonsall, Welcome to the Plant Yourself Podcast!
Plant Yourself Podcast 224: Will Bonsall HOWARD: Will Bonsall, welcome to the Plant Yourself Podcast! WILL: Hi Howard, it’s good to be here. Greetings to everyone. HOWARD: Yeah, so I wanted to begin by just asking you to tell us your story. This is actually our second time recording. I had some technical difficulties, and I realized as I was biking from my little shed to a different office that the reason I wanted you to tell that story in particular is that your concepts and ideas and things you put together seemed to me so creative. They’re so far beyond anything that I thought about these topics that I’d thought about for a long time that I was really interested in what were the influences that allowed you to see things from such a broad perspective. Tell us how you got to where you are now. WILL: Yeah, incidentally, that tends to be how I think for better or worse. I tend to be a great big-picture visionary sort of thing and not so good at nuts and bolts and details, and linking them together is often a problem for me. Well, when I was a teenager and first left home to… went away from home, my first job was in a mining business. I worked for a couple of mining companies prospecting for copper, lead, and zinc and so on, and it got old pretty fast. I decided I didn’t wanna have anything to do with it. I decided I was more interested in something that involved more recycling and was a little more sustainable.

  • Legislative Assembly- PROOF Page 1
Tuesday, 4 August 2020 Legislative Assembly- PROOF Page 1 LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY Tuesday, 4 August 2020 The Speaker (The Hon. Jonathan Richard O'Dea) took the chair at 12:00. The Speaker read the prayer and acknowledgement of country. [Notices of motions given.] Bills GAS LEGISLATION AMENDMENT (MEDICAL GAS SYSTEMS) BILL 2020 First Reading Bill introduced on motion by Mr Kevin Anderson, read a first time and printed. Second Reading Speech Mr KEVIN ANDERSON (Tamworth—Minister for Better Regulation and Innovation) (12:16:12): I move: That this bill be now read a second time. I am proud to introduce the Gas Legislation Amendment (Medical Gas Systems) Bill 2020. The bill delivers on the New South Wales Government's promise to introduce a robust and effective licensing regulatory system for persons who carry out medical gas work. As I said on 18 June on behalf of the Government in opposing the Hon. Mark Buttigieg's private member's bill, nobody wants to see a tragedy repeated like the one we saw at Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital. As I undertook then, the Government has taken the steps necessary to provide a strong, robust licensing framework for those persons installing and working on medical gases in New South Wales. To the families of John Ghanem and Amelia Khan, on behalf of the Government I repeat my commitment that we are taking action to ensure no other families will have to endure as they have. The bill forms a key part of the Government's response to licensed work for medical gases that are supplied in medical facilities in New South Wales.

  • Stephen Bali Inaugural Speech.Pdf
Inaugural Speeches Inaugural Speeches Extract from NSW Legislative Assembly Hansard and Papers Tuesday 21 November 2017. Mr STEPHEN BALI (Blacktown) (16:36): Parliamentary colleagues, distinguished guests and my dear family. I acknowledge the Gadigal people of the Eora nation and I pay my respects to elders past and present for their custodianship of the land on which we meet. I also acknowledge the Dharug people whose ancestors walked the Blacktown electorate. It is an incredible honour and a humbling experience to address this historic Chamber, the oldest Parliament of Australia, and to represent the needs and aspirations of the people of Blacktown. To do so as the son of a refugee says much about the equality and opportunity of Australian society. I recognise in the gallery the Ambassador to Hungary, His Excellency Dr Attila Gruber, and the Polish Consul General, Ms Regina Jurkowska. My family story has much in common with many of the constituents of Blacktown, and indeed with many members of this Chamber. My parents came to Australia by boat as refugees after the 1956 Hungarian communist revolution. My father, Karoly—known as Charlie—was 20 years old and learnt English on the boat. My mother, Eva, was a teenager accompanying her family who were settling in Melbourne. My father travelled the countryside, working wherever he got a job. They met and married in 1959 and moved to a house in Doonside, which was the home of my Aunt Gizi. When Gizi returned to Hungary my parents took over the mortgage on the fibro house, which is still my mother's home today.

  • Parramatta Female Factory Precinct
History – Parramatta Female Factory Precinct Burramatta Land (≈60,000 Years Ago – Present) The Burramatta people have lived on the upper reaches of the Parramatta River, including the land of the Parramatta North Heritage Precinct, for at least 60,000 years (Parramatta City Council, 2015). The Burramatta are part of the Darug clan who occupy the Cumberland Plain and nearby areas of the Blue Mountains. The Darug comprise of coastal, hinterland and mountain groups of which the Burramatta form a border grouping between coastal and hinterland communities (Comber 2014, p. 18). Prior to their dispossession and displacement, the Burramatta travelled seasonally across their land in groups of between 30 to 60 people with the Parramatta River (the southerly edge of the Parramatta North Heritage Precinct) being an important source of food, including eel, from which Burramatta (and later Parramatta) are etymologically derived (‘place where the eels lie down’) (Parramatta City Council, 2015). The Burramatta fished mullet, crayfish, shellfish, turtles, eels, shellfish, molluscs and other marine animals with the women usually fishing from canoes while the men speared from the banks of the Parramatta River (Kass et al 1996, p. 7). Terrestrial food sources included possums, fruits and vegetables (such as yams). Other flora, such as Eucalyptus leaves, was used for medicines and trees were used to make shelters, canoes and other implements. British settlement of Parramatta from 1788 began the marginalisation of the Burramatta people from their lands, as occurred with other peoples throughout the Sydney Basin. Contact between the Burramatta and British was limited at first, but gradually some trade took place.
