Some Aspects of Defence in the Eighteen Fifties in New South Wales
SOME ASPECTS OF DEFENCE IN THE EIGHTEEN FIFTIES IN NEW SOUTH WALES By DUNCAN MACCALLUM THIS paper is confined to some of the political aspects of Colonial and Imperial defence, and does not discuss technical strategy; nor are even the political aspects of naval defence discussed. The paper suggests that the activity of Sir William Denison in New South Wales, coming after the attempts by Earl Grey to reduce Imperial military expenditure, and the activity of John Robert Godley in the War Office, and of his friends, were important factors in the ending of the British garrison system in colonies which had achieved some measure of responsible government. The views of all three men took account of the growth of the Australian colonies, and those of Grey and Godley were part of separate strands of thought which formed a pattern of opinion in favour of reducing British military expenditure. Trends and events elsewhere in the Empire were observed and influenced opinion. In fact, New South Wales and Victoria were less obviously open to criticisms of their military contribution than were the more complicated societies of South Africa and New Zealand. The eighteen fifties and eighteen sixties in the Australasian group generally saw the occasional war scares, such as the Crimean War, the fear of the French, and the American scares of 1859 and 1861, the Polish scare of 1864. The colonies, aware of their growing pastoral wealth and gold, developed some transitory interest in building fortification and in having available some military forces with which to man them. More significantly the period also saw the culmination of the attempts to relieve British military pressure and to lessen the dispersion of garrisons abroad. -

EMPTY HISTORICAL BOXES OF THE EARLY DAYS: LAYING CLIO'S GHOSTS ON THE SHORES OF NEW HOLLAND* By DUNCAN ~T ACC.ALU'M HE title does not foreshadow an exhumation of the village Hampdens, as Webb T called them,! buried on the shores of Botany Bay. In fact, they were probably thieves, but let their ;-emains rest in peace. No, the metaphor in the title is from an analogy from a memorable controversy in value theory in Economics. 2 The title was meant to suggest the need for giving some historical content to the emotions that have accompanied discussions of the early period. Some of the figures which seem to have been conjured up by historical writers have been given malignancy but 110t identity. Yet these faceless men of the past, and the roles for which they have been cast, seem to distort the play of life. And indeed, it is perhaps because the historical boxes have remained unfilled, and because the background-the rest of the play and action-has not been fully explored, that some people of the early period, well known to us by name, have been interpreted in the light of twentieth-century prejudice and political controversy. We know all too little about the quality of day-to-day life in early Australia, the spiritual and material existence of the early Europeans, their energies, their activities and outlook. In the first stage of an inquiry I have been pursuing into our early social history, I am concerned not with these more elusive yet in a way more interesting questions, but in what sort of colony it was with the officers, the gaol and the port. -

Wearing a kangaroo-skin cape and possum-skin slippers, he found freedom in the wooded valleys and winding creeks at Moondyne Hills. Joe was harmless, except possibly to a few settlers whose horses had a ‘mysterious’ way of straying. When blamed for the disappearance of a farmer’s prize stallion the colonial authorities were soon to find out that there wasn’t a jail that could hold Joe! On Writing “The Legend of Moondyne Joe” By Mark Greenwood I wanted to create a fun story, accurate in detail, about a strength of spirit that was nurtured by life in the new colony. A book that would bring to life a legend from our colourful history. I believe by having an appreciation of their own history, children better understand themselves, their community and their culture. Transportation for life The story of John Woolliscroft 1799-1869 John Woolliscroft was the son of Joseph Woolliscroft and Elizabeth Mills and christened at Cheadle, Staffordshire on the 23 Feb 1799. His father died in 1817. At the time he was farming at Peakstones, Alton, Staffordshire, a tenant of James Beech of Kingsley. Peakstones was located on the road (present day B5032) from Alton to Cheadle. Joseph left his estate to his wife including the tenancy of Peakstones. In 1819 John's mother Elizabeth remarried to publican and widower Thomas Swetnam at Alton in Staffordshire.1, 2 John married Sarah Wright in 1818 at Swynnerton, Staffordshire. The marriage was witnessed by George and Rosehannah Mills. The marriage appears to have been troubled and in 1827 John was in a relationship with someone else. On the 2 August 1827 John Woolliscroft appeared with John Malbon (Malabone) at Stafford Assizes on two counts. Firstly for assaulting Solomon Smith on the Highway, robbing him of 7s 6d on the 15 June 1827 in Denstone Lane on his way back from Ashbourne. The newspaper report of the trial states that “the prisoners were men of truly ferocious character and appearance and formed part of a desperate gang with which the neighbourhood had been infested”. John Malbon had given a false statement after him arrest placing the blame on John Woolliscroft and his brother Thomas. In his defence John Woolliscroft brought forward a woman with whom he was living in a “habitual state of criminal intercourse”. The newspaper report of the trial states that the lady in question was aware John was a married man. -

Community update August 2017 Changes to bus stops in Rozelle, Lilyfield, Leichhardt, Annandale and Camperdown Transport for NSW has identified some ways to improve bus on-time running in Sydney’s inner west. Transport for NSW and Roads and Maritime Services } Norton Street near Carlisle Street asked the community for feedback between December } Norton Street near Norton Plaza (one removal only) 2015 and January 2016 on a proposal to make changes to some bus stops in Sydney’s inner west. The first members of his family to come to Van Diemen’s Land were Frederick Lewis von Stieglitz and two of his brothers who arrived in 1829. Henry Lewis, another brother, and the father of John Charles and grandfather of Karl, arrived the following year. John Charles von Stieglitz, after qualifying as a surveyor in Tasmania, moved to Northern Queensland in 1868, where he worked as a surveyor with the Queensland Government, later acquiring properties near Townsville. In 1883, at Townsville he married Mary Mackenzie, who died in 1883. Later he went to England where he married Lillian Stead in London in 1886. On his return to Tasmania he purchased “Andora”, Evandale: the impressive house on the property was built for him in 1888. He was the MHA for Evandale from 1891 to 1903. Karl von Stieglitz visited England with his father during 1913-1914. After his father’s death in 1916, he took possession of “Andora”. He enlisted in the First World War in 1916, but after nearly a year in the AIF (AMC branch) was unable to proceed overseas due to rheumatic fever.
