Serving the Norwegian Nation with Islamophobia: Analysing the Rhetoric About Islam and Muslims of Hege Storhaug and Human Right’S Service (HRS)1
Serving the Norwegian nation with Islamophobia: Analysing the rhetoric about Islam and Muslims of Hege Storhaug and Human Right’s Service (HRS)1 Sindre Bangstadª and Frode Hellandb ªKIFO, Institute For Church, Religion And Worldview Research, Oslo, Norway b Faculty of Humanities, University of Oslo, Oslo, Norway Abstract This article analyses the rhetoric about Islam and Muslims of the individual who has arguably been most central in the ‘framing of Muslims’ in Norway as a social and political problem since 2001, Hege Storhaug of the Norwegian government-funded civil society organization Human Rights Service (HRS). Using the methodological tools of what is known as the ‘rhetorical branch’ of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), and applying the Aristotelian concepts of ethos, logos and pathos, we herein analyze the bestselling popular title on Islam and Muslims in Norway ever published, namely Storhaug’s self- published 2015 title ‘Islam – The Eleventh Plague.’ We argue that Storhaug’s popular success must be understood in light of her rhetorical appeals to femonationalism, the critique of religion and ‘Enlightenment’ values. Article history Received 03 May 2018; Accepted 18 February 2019. Keywords Norway, Muslims, Islamophobia, Hege Storhaug, Human Rights Service, Racism 1 Introduction: Framing Muslims in Norway – method and representativeness In Norway, no single actor has been more influential in the ‘framing of Muslims’ as the major social, cultural, economic and political problem today (Morey and Yaqin 2011) than Hege Storhaug of the civil society organization Human Rights Service (HRS). Her trajectory within the Norwegian public sphere can serve as an illustration of Bail’s description of the development by which the rhetorics and ideas about Islam and Muslims of a far-right fringe in the years after September 11 2001 turned mainstream in the US (Bail 2015). -

IMISCOE grillo ₍ed.₎ The family life of immigrants and settled ethnic minority populations is now central ReseaRch to arguments about the rights and wrongs of living in multicultural societies. As the practices believed to be characteristic of such families become the object of much media comment and frequent policy initiatives, an intense, often acrimonious debate about cultural difference has arisen. At the same time, individuals are themselves reflecting deeply on how to manage their ties in a world where migration The in Family Question is transnational, societies are increasingly pluralised and relations become more The Family in Question complex and less clear-cut. This volume explores these debates in a series of case studies on immigrant and ethnic minority families in Austria, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, the UK and Australia. The Family in Question Immigrant and Ethnic Minorities shows how those concerned with public policy often unthinkingly reflect the in Multicultural Europe popular imagination and contribute to what in recent times has become a dangerous xenophobic stereotyping of immigrants and their descendants. ralph grillo (ed.) Ralph Grillo is Emeritus Professor of Social Anthropology at the University of Sussex, where he was formerly Dean of the School of African and Asian Studies and Director of the Centre for Culture, Development and the Environment. ETHNIC AND RACIAL STUDIES https://doi.org/10.1080/01419870.2019.1615630 The rhetoric of Islamophobia: an analysis of the means of persuasion in Hege Storhaug’s writings on Islam and Muslims Sindre Bangstada and Frode Hellandb ªKIFO, Institute For Church, Religion And Worldview Research, Oslo, Norway; bFaculty of Humanities, University of Oslo, Oslo, Norway ABSTRACT Few actors have had a greater impact on the “framing of Muslims” as a social and political “problem” in Norway since 2001 than Hege Storhaug of the government- and corporate billionaire funded civil society organization Human Rights Service (HRS). Using the methodological tools of the “rhetorical branch” of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), and applying the Aristotelian concepts of ethos, logos and pathos, we analyze the bestselling popular title on Islam and Muslims ever published in Norway, namely Storhaug’s self- published 2015 title “Islam – The Eleventh Plague”. We argue that Storhaug’s popular success must be understood in light of her rhetorical appeals to femonationalism, the critique of religion and “Enlightenment” values. We show how she in her writings incites fear of the Muslim “Other” through specific rhetorical devices and a positioning of herself as a defender of the “nation” and the “people”–against national and international “elites”.
............................................................................................................................. 1 Konflikttemaer i innvandringsdebatten i norske debattprogrammer 1970-2019 ................................................. -
