Eastern State Penitentiary HSR: IV. Fabric Summary 282 IV. FABRIC SUMMARY: CONSTRUCTION, ALTERATIONS, AND USES OF SPACE (for documentation, see Appendices A and B, by date, and C, by location) Jeffrey A. Cohen § A. Front Building (figs. C3.1 - C3.19) Work began in the 1823 building season, following the commencement of the perimeter walls and preceding that of the cellblocks. In August 1824 all the active stonecutters were employed cutting stones for the front building, though others were idled by a shortage of stone. Twenty-foot walls to the north were added in the 1826 season bounding the warden's yard and the keepers' yard. Construction of the center, the first three wings, the front building and the perimeter walls were largely complete when the building commissioners turned the building over to the Board of Inspectors in July 1829. The half of the building east of the gateway held the residential apartments of the warden. The west side initially had the kitchen, bakery, and other service functions in the basement, apartments for the keepers and a corner meeting room for the inspectors on the main floor, and infirmary rooms on the upper story. The latter were used at first, but in September 1831 the physician criticized their distant location and lack of effective separation, preferring that certain cells in each block be set aside for the sick. By the time Demetz and Blouet visited, about 1836, ill prisoners were separated rather than being placed in a common infirmary, and plans were afoot for a group of cells for the sick, with doors left ajar like others.

  • Describe Legendary Musician Taj Mahal in a Single Word Or Phrase? Impossible
Describe legendary musician Taj Mahal in a single word or phrase? Impossible. You could call him a singer, multi‐instrumentalist, composer, producer, ethnomusicologist, two‐ time Grammy‐winner, world‐class musical collaborator, musicians' advocate, world traveler, fisherman, or cigar aficionado. These titles are all accurate, yet none convey the warmth, humor, and soulfulness of Taj and his music. Taj has been playing his own distinctive brand of music ‐‐ variously described as Afro‐Caribbean blues, folk‐world‐blues, hula blues, folk‐funk, and a host of other hyphenations ‐‐ for more than 40 years. Caribbean, Hawaiian, African, Latin, and Cuban sounds and rhythms mix with folk, jazz, zydeco, gospel, rock, pop, soul, and R&B, all layered on top of a solid country blues foundation. What ties it all together is Taj's abiding interest in musical discovery, particularly in tracing many American musical forms back to their roots in Africa and Europe. Following his passion, Taj has spent time in the Caribbean, West Africa, Hawaii, Europe, the South Pacific, Australia, South America, and all over the continental U.S. His music reflects his global perspective, incorporating sounds from everywhere he's lived and traveled. A self‐taught musician, Taj plays more than 20 instruments, including the National Steel and Dobro guitars. His remarkable voice ranges from gruff and gravelly to smooth and sultry. Roots "The blues is a tone that puts me in contact with a lot of things, culturally, spiritually, cosmically. I really enjoy it, and I'm not going to let it go, because it's that good." Taj Mahal Born Henry St.

In the summer of 1967, Randy Craig Wolfe (aka Randy California), discovered by Jimi Hendrix, was a founding member of the eclectic rock band Spirit who pioneered the psychedelic rock sound. The band fused rock and jazz and enhanced the audio palette by incorporating mind-bending and mood-altering effects such as the Etherwave-Theremin, delay, and distortion into their recorded songs and live performances. 2. In January 1968 Spirit released a self-titled album named Spirit—a top 40 Billboard charting album. On that album was a unique 2 minute and 37 second instrumental titled “Taurus” which has a distinct-plucked guitar line and melody.

Features PAUL WERTICO Pat Metheny's Paul Wertico is a bundle of contradictions: a highly exploratory drummer whose solo album is far from a chops-fest; a sophisticated accompanist who never took a lesson; a mainstream musician with avant-garde tendencies. Just who is this guy? Bill Milkowski 36 METAL DRUMMERS ROUND TABLE Away from the arenas and MTV cameras, today's top metal drummers have some serious issues to contend with—about the instrument they play and the business they're entangled in. Mike Portnoy, Deen Castronovo, Mark Zonder, Bobby Rock, Eric Singer, and John Tempesta cut to the chase. Matt Peiken 56 WHERE ARE THEY NOW? So you thought you'd never hear from the drummer in the Archies again—well, think again! Actually...we couldn't track him down.. .but we did get a hold of lots of your old faves— twenty-three of 'em, in fact. Contents Features TRIS IMBODEN A drummer who can burn on gigs as diverse as Kenny Loggins, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Al Jarreau, and Cecilia & The Wild Clams is obviously prepared for the most demanding situations. With the release of Chicago's contemporary big band album—as well as a CD of all-new material—it seems Tris Imboden has found the perfect challenge. Robyn Flans 34 PETE THOMAS Pete Thomas's best-known gig may be Elvis Costello, but lately he's proven perfectly suited to projects by Richard Thompson, Matthew Sweet, Los Lobos, and John Paul Jones/Diamanda Galas. A recent Costello engagement in NYC proved just the right time to catch up with this drumset chameleon. Adam Budofsky 56 THE DRUMMERS OF BRAZIL The city of Recife was recently the site of the very first Oficina de Percussao, a week-long celebration of Brazilian drumming. With this unique event as a backdrop, Brazil's top drumset artists gather 'round the table and describe what it is to ply the trade in the deepest percussive culture of all.
