Through this analysis, this work evidences the whole process of Reformation that England went through during the XVI century. As a result, the English Church becomes independent from the authority of the Pope. The main purpose of this investigation is to carefully examine the primary and secondary facts that prompted the separation from the Catholic Church on the grounds that the Henrician Reformation developed differently, in relation to the European process. Furthermore, this work intends to unveil the true nature of King Henry VIII’s character and the way his actions, way of living, beliefs and thoughts influenced on the separation of the Church and as a result lead to the Reformation era. After all, Henry VIII was one of the most controversial political figures of all times. The most important highlights in King Henry VIII’s life are presented in order to contextualize the reader to the conditions that conducted to the most striking changes that Catholic England had undergone. Together with Henry’s Great Matter, this work also presents a complete account of the King’s personal life, to make the reader understand the decisions made by Henry in critical times, covering from the relationships with his wives, mistresses, children to his medical records, controversial aspects in his life that for most historians turned him into a tyrant while for some other, one of the greatest English Kings ever. -

‘All wemen in thar degree shuld to thar men subiectit be’: The controversial court career of Elisabeth Parr, marchioness of Northampton, c. 1547-1565 Helen Joanne Graham-Matheson, BA, MA. Thesis submitted to UCL for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy 1 Declaration I, Helen Joanne Graham-Matheson confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 2 Abstract This thesis reconstructs and analyses the life and agency of Elisabeth Parr, marchioness of Northampton (1526-1565), with the aim of increasing understanding of women’s networks of influence and political engagement at the mid-Tudor courts, c. 1547- 1565. Analysis of Elisabeth’s life highlights that in the absence of a Queen consort the noblewomen of the Edwardian court maintained and utilized access to those in power and those with political significance and authority. During the reign of Mary Tudor, Elisabeth worked with her natal family to undermine Mary’s Queenship and support Elizabeth Tudor, particularly by providing her with foreign intelligence. At the Elizabethan court Elisabeth regained her title (lost under Mary I) and occupied a position as one of the Queen’s most trusted confidantes and influential associates. Her agency merited attention from ambassadors and noblemen as well as from the Emperor Maximilian and King Erik of Sweden, due to the significant role she played in several major contemporary events, such as Elizabeth’s early marriage negotiations. This research is interdisciplinary, incorporating early modern social, political and cultural historiographies, gender studies, social anthropology, sociology and the study of early modern literature. -

Architecture Click here for a fuller account of Elizabeth. One of the principle events of the reign of Elizabeth was the defeat of the Spanish Armada (here's the BBC Armada site). Elizabeth's famous (and short) speech before the battle can be found here. England's power grew mightily in this period, which is reflected in the lives and achievements of contemporary 'heroes' such as Sir Francis Drake, fearless fighter against the Spanish who circumnavigated the globe, and Sir Walter Raleigh (nowadays pronounced Rawley), one of those who established the first British colonies across the Atlantic (and who spelt his name in over 40 different ways...). Raleigh is generally 'credited' with the commercial introduction of tobacco into England .about 1778, and possibly of the potato. On a lighter note, information on Elizabethan costume is available here (including such items as farthingales and bumrolls). Literature Drama and the theatre The Elizabethan age is the golden age of English drama, for which the establishment of permanent theatres is not least responsible. As performances left the inn-yards and noble houses for permanent sites in London, the demand for drama increased enormously. While some of the smaller theatres were indoors, it is the purpose-built round/square/polygonal buildings such as The Theatre (the first, built in 1576), the Curtain (late 1570s?), the Rose (1587), the Swan (1595), the Fortune (1600) and of course the Globe (1599) that are most characteristic of the period. -

This pulls into one News Europe/World hypertext-based listing a collection 6-8 of museums, galleries, rare print vendors and other online facilities The Round Mounds to enable members to find, in Project one place, a comprehensive view 8 of all known antiquarian prints, engravings, sketches and paintings of named castles throughout the News Wales UK. Many can be enlarged on screen 9-10 and downloaded, and freely used in non-commercial, educational material, provided suitable credits are given, SMA Conference permissions sought and copyright sources acknowledged. The second page Report deals with ‘Early Photographic Resources’. This likewise brings together 10 all known sources and online archives of early Victorian photographic material from the 1840s starting with W H Fox Talbot through to the early Obituary 20th century. It details the early pioneers and locates where the earliest 11 photographic images of castles can be found. There is a downloadable fourteen-page essay entitled ‘Castle Studies and the Early Use of the CSG Conference Camera 1840-1914’. This charts the use of photographs in early castle- Report related publications and how the presentation and technology changed over 12 the years. Issues in Review Elizabeth Schafer (Contributing Editor), Alison Findlay, Ramona Wray, Yasmin Arshad, Helen Hackett, Emma Whipday, Rebecca McCutcheon Early Modern Women Theatre Makers Introduction: Attending to Early Modern Women as Theatre Makers Elizabeth Schafer Early Theatre 17.2 (2014), 125–132 DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.12745/et.18.2.2600 This essay introduces the playwrights under consideration and looks forward to the four essays in this section examining the work of early modern women theatre makers. The introduction ends with a census of early modern women’s plays in modern performance. This Issues in Review focuses on the performance of early modern plays created by women theatre makers, that is, women who wrote, translated, published, commissioned and, in all probability, produced and performed in plays. But these plays have been corseted and closeted by critics — some of them feminist — who have claimed access to the theatre makers’ inten- tions and have asserted, despite no documentary evidence, that these plays were not intended to be performed. In particular these plays have been half strangled by critics’ use of the anachronistic and inappropriate nineteenth- century term ‘closet drama’. The methodology used here to uncloset and uncorset three of these plays — Lady Jane Lumley’s Iphigenia in Aulis, Eliza- beth Cary’s The Tragedy of Mariam, and the Mary Sidney Herbert commis- sioned Cleopatra by Samuel Daniel — is to explore them by means of the Elizabeth Schafer ([email protected]) is professor of drama and theatre studies at Royal Holloway, University of London. 125 126 Issues in Review collective, creative, and community-based acts of criticism that take place when the plays are performed today. -

SERVANTS’ PASSAGE: Cultural identity in the architecture of service in British and American country houses 1740-1890 2 Volumes Volume 1 of 2 Aimée L Keithan PhD University of York Archaeology March 2020 Abstract Country house domestic service is a ubiquitous phenomenon in eighteenth and nineteenth century Britain and America. Whilst shared architectural and social traditions between the two countries are widely accepted, distinctive cultural identity in servant architecture remains unexplored. This thesis proposes that previously unacknowledged cultural differences between British and American domestic service can be used to rewrite narratives and re-evaluate the significance of servant spaces. It uses the service architecture itself as primary source material, relying on buildings archaeology methodologies to read the physical structures in order to determine phasing. Archival sources are mined for evidence of individuals and household structure, which is then mapped onto the architecture, putting people into their spaces over time. Spatial analysis techniques are employed to reveal a more complex service story, in both British and American houses and within Anglo-American relations. Diverse spatial relationships, building types and circulation channels highlight formerly unrecognised service system variances stemming from unique cultural experiences in areas like race, gender and class. Acknowledging the more nuanced relationship between British and American domestic service restores the cultural identity of country house servants whose lives were not only shaped by, but who themselves helped shape the architecture they inhabited. Additionally, challenging accepted narratives by re-evaluating domestic service stories provides a solid foundation for a more inclusive country house heritage in both nations. This provides new factors on which to value modern use of servant spaces in historic house museums, expanding understanding of their relevance to modern society. -

The community consists of 184 residential units in 28 townhome style buildings, all currently owned and managed by the Minneapolis Public Housing Authority (MPHA). The development con- tains the following unit types: 26 one-bedroom, 70 two-bedrooms, 70 three-bedrooms, and 18 four-bedroom apartments.
