Crisman The French Revolution had begun in 1789 and by 1793 Britain and France were engaged in war. Hostilities extended to their world-wide possessions, and to the high seas where each nation strived to capture the other's naval and merchant ships as prizes. In November 1793, the French Navy's 12-pounder frigate 1'Inconstante was captured off the French West Indian colony of St. Domingue, taken to Jamaica and sold into His Majesty's Service as the Convert. The Royal Navy frigate was to escort and protect a produce-laden convoy of 55 merchantmen from Jamaica to ports in Britain; three vessels bound for America would join them. The greatest danger to the fleet, however, was not to be the French, for on 8 February 1794 the Convert, together with nine of the merchant ships, wrecked on the windward reefs of Grand Cayman. This dissertation investigates the history and archaeology of the shipwreck disaster which has survived in Cayman Islands folklore as the legend of the Wreck of the Ten Sail. But current research indicates that the incident has historical significance that exceeds the bounds of Cayman's national attention. It is tied to the history of Britain and France in the French Revolutionary Period, and is evidence of the wide geographical distribution of European war and trade at the close of the eighteenth century. This study is a presentation of history, archaeology and folklore. Research entailed archival work in Jamaica, Britain and France; archaeological survey and mapping of shipwreck sites scattered IV over the reefs of Grand Cayman's East End; and oral history interviews with older Caymanians whose parents and grandparents told them the story of the Wreck of the Ten Sail. Results of the investigation include a better understanding of the historical and geographical context of the shipwreck disaster; a more thorough and accurate account of the event; specific knowledge of the locations and nature of archaeological remains; recovery, conservation, and analysis of artifacts; and an awareness of the enduring effects of the Wreck of the Ten Sail on the Cayman Islands.     Names of Ships from the Hornblower Books. Introduction Hornblower’s biographer, C S Forester, wrote eleven books covering the most active and dramatic episodes of the life of his subject. In addition, he also wrote a Hornblower “Companion” and the so called three “lost” short stories. There were some years and activities in Hornblower’s life that were not written about before the biographer’s death and therefore not recorded. However, the books and stories that were published describe not only what Hornblower did and thought about his life and career but also mentioned in varying levels of detail the people and the ships that he encountered. Hornblower of course served on many ships but also fought with and against them, captured them, sank them or protected them besides just being aware of them. Of all the ships mentioned, a handful of them would have been highly significant for him. The Indefatigable was the ship on which Midshipman and then Acting Lieutenant Hornblower mostly learnt and developed his skills as a seaman and as a fighting man. This learning continued with his experiences on the Renown as a lieutenant. His first commands, apart from prizes taken, were on the Hotspur and the Atropos. Later as a full captain, he took the Lydia round the Horn to the Pacific coast of South America and his first and only captaincy of a ship of the line was on the Sutherland. He first flew his own flag on the Nonsuch and sailed to the Baltic on her. In later years his ships were smaller as befitted the nature of the tasks that fell to him.

However, as Mortimer Wheeler noted, “the archaeologist is digging up, not things, but people” (Wheeler 1954: 13), so how do we extract information about those crewing these ships from shipwrecks? AJAX DURING 1975-76 Author believed to be CRS (W) Fox We sailed out of Plymouth Sound on the morning of July the 22nd to the sound of "When will I see you again" by the "Three Degrees" playing on the Jimmy young Show. I suppose that the wife who requested that record for the Eighth Frigate Squadron was not presented with a copy of our 'Longcast'. We thank you for your kind thought. We left in company with H.M.S. Berwick and that afternoon we were hard at work carrying out anti-submarine exercises with the Submarine H.M.S/M Otter and R.A.F. Nimrod. At 0130 the following morning, we rendezvous'd with the remainder of the Deployment Group - H.M.S.'s Glamorgan (Flying the Flag of Flag Officer Second Flotilla), Plymouth, Llandaff, Rothesay and R.F.A.'s Gold Rover, Tarbatness and Tidespring. Immediately the Group were busy working together fighting off 'attacks' by Otter. As we headed South, Admiral Lewin, the then Commander-in-Chief Fleet, sent the following message to the Task Group: "The progress of your circumnavigation will be watched with envy. You carry the reputation of the Fleet with you. I am confident that it is in good hands and that you will remind the people of many countries of the continuing professionalism and courtesy of the Royal Navy. Work hard, have fun, and enjoy the comradship of your impressive Group. Bon Voyage." From the Southwest Approaches we proceeded to Cape Finisterre carrying out inter-ship exercises.
