Alexi Matchavariani - Biography - The folk music of his homeland was always of great importance to the Georgian composer Alexi Matchavariani, born on 23 September 1913. In his first works, written in the 1930s, he treated rhythmic and melodic elements of Georgian folksongs. But the progressive tendencies of Soviet music of that period also influenced his work. Matchavariani’s style thus shows a polystylistic dialogue, as a mixture of traditional, Georgian music and contemporary compositional techniques. The musician, recipient of many awards, completed his studies at the Tbilissi Conservatory in 1936. He taught music theory there beginning in 1940 and was appointed professor of composition in 1963. His creative output covers a very broad spectrum: chamber music, romances, symphonies, operas and ballets. The composer’s first major success was the Piano Concerto of 1944, but his real breakthrough only took place in 1950 with the Concerto for Violin and Orchestra, a very lyrical work with a special attraction thanks to its combination of diatonic folk music and chromaticism. Matchavariani also earned recognition with the ballet “Othello” in symphonic style. This work was performed abroad a number of times, including in Tokyo, Bucharest and Helsinki, and also in Russia. Matchavariani’s music can be seen as a reflection of his lifelong search for the synthesis of national musical influences and new compositional techniques. Only a few years after the magnificent success of his ballet “Othello” in 1957, Matchavariani decided to tackle an opera based on Shakespeare’s “Hamlet.” He began writing a libretto in collaboration with the Georgian producer Meliva based on a translation by Ivane Machabeli. -

This edition presents a report on the activities carried out by the State Agency for Religious Is- sues in 2018-2019, including analysis of the situation in the country regarding freedom of religion and those main events that the Agency is conducting to promote freedom of religion and a tolerant environment. In the report, particular attention is payed to the occupied territories of Georgia, where Georgian churches and monasteries are destroyed and the rights of indigenous peoples are severely violated in terms of freedom of religion, expression and movement. In 1953 Joseph Stalin—originally Georgian and the incarnate symbol of the country— died, and soon the much-talked-about Twentieth Assembly of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union headed by Nikita Khrushchev followed in 1956. In Georgia, Khrushchev’s speech against Stalin was followed by serious political unrest that ended with the tragic events of March 9th, 1956. It is still unclear whether this was a political event or demonstration of insulted national pride. Soon after that, the Khrushchev Thaw (Russian: Ottepel) occurred throughout the Soviet Union. The literary process during the Thaw yielded quite a different picture compared to the previous decades of Soviet life. Under the conditions of political liberalization, various tendencies were noticed in Georgian literary space: on the one hand, there was an obvious nostalgia for Stalin, and on the other hand there was the growth of a specific model of Neo-Realism and, of no less importance, the rise of women’s writing. Cardwell Continuum Press, London – New York, 2004 Volume II, Chapter 21: LIBERTY AND FREEDOM AND THE GEORGIAN BYRON Innes Merabishvili At the age of twenty one Lord Byron published his famous satire English Bards and Scotch Reviewers where he set out the plans of his first journey: Yet once again, adieu! Ere this the sail That wafts me hence is shivering in the gale; And Afric’s coast and Calpe’s adverse height, And Stamboul’s minarets must greet my sight; Thence shall I stray through beauty’s native clime Where Kaff is clad in rocks, and crown’d with snows sublime. Here Kaff denotes the Caucasus, but under 'beauty’s native clime' Byron meant Georgia, the country that is situated between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea, bordering with Armenia, Azerbaijan, Turkey, Chechnya, Ossetia, Ukraine and Russia. Thus, being located on the crossroads of Asia and Europe, the history of Georgia has been marked by intensive interactions with other cultures and nations which, when not aggressors, were generally welcomed. In the same way Georgia welcomed Byron. By the time of Lord Byron’s intended journey across the Caucasus, Georgia had obtained peace through the patronage of the Russian Empire. In 1801 Russia abolished the Kartl-Kakhetian kingdom, which had been a Russian protectorate since 1783 and formally incorporated it into the Russian Empire. The Russian patronage, though politically oppressive, opened huge prospects to Europe and to its great men and writers. Georgia was firmly linked with Russia but this was never a one-sided connection. -

1 44th INTERNATIONAL BYRON CONFERENCE Improvisation and Mobility nd th Ravenna: July 2 – JULY 7 , 2018 Participants: Samvel Abrahamyan is Associate Professor and Dean of the Faculty of Romance and Germanic Philology, Yerevan State University. He is chairman of the Byron Centre at Yerevan State University. He earned his PhD in British History at the Academy of Sciences, Moscow. The main fields of his scientific interests are British and American studies, political discourse, language, culture, literature and communication. He is author of more than 70 scientific works, including monographs, text-books, articles and papers. Catherine Addison is a fifth-generation South African who holds the post of professor of English at the University of Zululand, South Africa. After completing a PhD on Byron at the University of British Columbia, Canada, she diversified her interests to include numerous other writers and periods, as well as colonial and postcolonial writing, the prose novel, African women’s fiction, and formal aspects of literature such as versification, narrative, simile and irony. Recently she has focused much of her attention on the verse-novel and in 2017 she published a book on the history of this hybrid genre. Joselyn Almeida-Beveridge is Associate Professor of English at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, where she teaches literature of the Age of Revolutions, Atlantic Studies, Classical Reception Studies, and Latino literature. She specializes on the transcultural archive of British and Luso-Hispanic cultures and the relation of global capitalism to slavery and abolition. Her first monograph, Reimagining the Transatlantic, 1780-1890 (2011), theorizes the pan-Atlantic as a region of political, material, and cultural interrelations between Britain, Africa, and the non-Anglophone Americas. -

Phasis 10 (II), 2007 Ketevan Gardapkhadze (Tbilisi) THE ARGONAUTICA IN THE WORKS OF GEORGIAN SYMBOLISTS Symbolism as a literary trend entered Georgia at the outset of the 20th century. In 1915 it was established in institutional terms, when a group of young poets formed a new literary order called ‘Blue Horns’. It was the period when Georgian artistic consciousness became extremely feeble. Shabby imitations of the 19th century great authors brought almost to nonsense the literary life of the country. The new generation found it impossible to follow the path. The only way for them to fulfill their inherent vocation and calling was Symbolism.1 The members of the Blue Horn shared completely the aesthetic principles of Symbolism, provided arguments for the necessity of establishing this trend in Georgia, looked for national foundation to build Symbolism on, tried to combine western European, Russian and Georgian outlooks, and give an original, peculiar character to Georgian Symbolism. ‘We must shape our Georgian profile’, Titsian Tabidze wrote, ‘the basic experience of being a Georgian is our primary requirement. It should imply our temperament, our sensibility, our image. We will unite the sharpness of the West and the sunny relaxation of the East.’2 This very original property of Georgian Symbolism underlay the reception of ancient culture by Georgian Symbolists. I will dwell only on one point of the comprehensive topic called the reception of ancient culture in the works of Georgian Symbolists. This point is the cycle of Argonautic myths. For French and Russian Symbolists, the Argonautica was the source of symbolic figures with strong passions and unforgettable events.
