[Myanmar] Research Society Brief History of the Burma
Analytical Study on the Publications edited and published by the Burma [Myanmar] Research Society Ni Win Zaw Abstract The Burma Research Society (BRS) was founded on 29th. March 1910 and had a programmee to Publish, in printed book-form, important texts from Myanmar palm-leaf and parabike paper manuscripts. The BRS did most valuable work in carefully editing and publishing many old manuscripts texts. The famous Myanmar scholar Dr. Pe Maung Tin served as the BRS General Editor for its Text Program from the early 1920s to about 1940 when the Society had to cease its activities due to the Second World War. After Second World War U Wun (Min Thu Wun) and U Tin E made energetic efforts for the BRS. U Wun served asa the General Editor for the New Series. This Paper describes authors, editors, editions, printing presses, publishing dates, cover style, arrangements, physical descriptions, series numbers, appendixes, indexes, footnotes, and subjects of these books.And also it identifies the performance of editors who were prominent Myanmar and Pali scholars like Saya Lin, Saya Pwa, U Po Sein, BaganWundauk U Tin, U Lu Pe Win, U Chan Mya, U Wun, U Thein Han, and others. Moreover,abilities of ancient Myanmar authors and role of old Myanmar literature are investigated and expressed in this paper. Brief History of the Burma (Myanmar ) Research Society The Burma Research Society was founded on 29th. March 1910 at Bernard Free Library in Rangoon (Yangon) by J.S.Furnivall who was a member of the India Civil Service stationed in Myanmar together with some learned Myanmar officials like U May Oung.1After Opening the Rangoon (Yangon) University, the headquarter of the Society was located at the Rangoon University (Universities' Central Library), from about 1930-1980. -

Both of them deals with the similar historical plot and shares common places. The Royal Family of Burma King Thibaw , who used to have the unchallenged power of life and death over the Burmese people are now living exile. They have to get approval from the British on every personal matter of their lives. The life in exile was extremely strange and frustrating for the once most powerful family of Burma. The present study also deals with how situation changes and people’s responses or readiness to accept the changes. The Central Character of The Glass Palace Rajkumar when came to Mandalay he had nothing , created an empire of timber and later on he left as a refugee when Japanese invaded their Country, whereas being the king of Burma, when he lost his kingdom to British and deported to India , he was forced to comply with little earning. This comparison in being set up on the grounds of Common places, Common plots and common themes between the two books. The study area is included fifteen wards. This paper emphasizes on the spatial distribution patterns of these schools are analyzed by using appropriate data analysis methods. This study is divided into two types of schools, they are governmental schools and nongovernmental schools. Qualitative and quantitative methods are used to express the spatial distribution patterns of Basic Education Schools in Pathein City. Primary data are obtained from field surveys, informal interview, and open type interview .Secondary data are collected from the offices and departments concerned .Detailed facts are obtained from local authorities and experience persons by open type interview. INTERNATIONAL BURMA STUDIES CONFERENCE OCTOBER 5-7, 2012 NORTHERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY ______________________________________________ FRIDAY, OCTOBER 5 PANEL ONE: GLIMPSES OF MYANMAR’S VERY LONG HISTORY (1) REGENCY ROOM ______________________________________________ A LABYRINTH IMAGE IN THE MAHOSADHA JATAKA LILIAN HANDLIN In Pagan’s Mahanipata’s hierarchization, Mahosadha was superseded only by Vessantara, reflecting the narrative’s local resonance and importance, its placement enabled by the noncatenated rebirths serialization in Pagan’s revered materials. Mahosadha, usually associated with perfecting “wisdom” and “knowledge” was popular in Pagan and later, among other matters for its riddles whose existential expressivities informed centuries of legal theories. One scholarly riddle about Mahosadha’s Pagan take is visible in elaborate images of a labyrinth, illustrating the protagonist’s supernatural powers. Later settings elsewhere adapted the labyrinth to illustrate the setting for Vessantara’s exile. The image seeped into Pagan from the eastern Mediterranean, a proverbial drop in the bucket that was the immensely complex interaction between Buddhism and first the ancient world, and later Islam, currently vibrant subjects of scholarly inquiry. What was the significance of this enigmatic construct and what does it suggest about Pagan’s sense of imagination, a concept whose broader implications have recently be explicated in David Shulman’s brilliant More than Real, History of the Imagination in South India ( 2012). SADDHAMMASIRI AND HIS PHILOSOPHY OF LANGUAGE ALEIX RUIZ-FALQUES Saddhammasiri is a well-known grammarian and author from Pagan. It is likely he lived in the 13th/14th centuries A.D. According to Bode’s Pali Literature of Burma (p.20) ‘he was probably among the first to use Burmese as a literary instrument’. -

ISBN 978-0-8248-6648-8 In this innovative ethnography of monastic education among the Dai- lue, an ethnic minority that practices Theravada Buddhism near China’s Southwest border, Thomas Borchert begins with a chance encounter in the spring of 2010 at the Buddhist College of Singapore (BCS). While giv- ing a lecture on Theravada Buddhism in Sipsongpanna—the primary res- idence of the Dai-lue—Borchert met a Dai-lue Buddhist monk from the region who was studying Buddhism as a Chinese monk wearing Chinese robes at BCS. Fast forward to 2011, Borchert saw the monk again in Sip- songpanna and learned that he had left BCS to take a break from his study. Since then, the monk has disrobed and worked for a cross-border trading company (175). Borchert’s encounter with the Dai-lue monk in Singapore and the monk’s eventual decision to disrobe highlight the complexity of Borchert’s core ethnographic question in the book: “What makes a Buddhist monk?” (1). -

Buddhism, Power and Political Order
BUDDHISM, POWER AND POLITICAL ORDER Weber’s claim that Buddhism is an otherworldly religion is only partially true. Early sources indicate that the Buddha was sometimes diverted from supra- mundane interests to dwell on a variety of politically related matters. The significance of Asoka Maurya as a paradigm for later traditions of Buddhist kingship is also well attested. However, there has been little scholarly effort to integrate findings on the extent to which Buddhism interacted with the polit- ical order in the classical and modern states of Theravada Asia into a wider, comparative study. This volume brings together the brightest minds in the study of Buddhism in Southeast Asia. Their contributions create a more coherent account of the relations between Buddhism and political order in the late pre-modern and modern period by questioning the contested relationship between monastic and secular power. In doing so, they expand the very nature of what is known as the ‘Theravada’. This book offers new insights for scholars of Buddhism, and it will stimulate new debates. Ian Harris is Professor of Buddhist Studies at the University of Cumbria, Lancaster, and was Senior Scholar at the Becket Institute, St Hugh’s College, University of Oxford, from 2001 to 2004. He is co-founder of the UK Association for Buddhist Studies and has written widely on aspects of Buddhist ethics. Sobana 2 Abstract Nation has been considered as a form of “restrictively imagined collectivities” (Anderson 147) by Amitav Ghosh in “A Correspondence on Provincializing Europe ” that creates hindrances in writing about the individual identity. This makes several writers deal with family centered novels and their conflicts. They find a way out from discussing the concept of nation by dealing with families in their works. Amitav Ghosh is one such writer who has displaced himself from bringing in the concept of nation in his 2001 Frankfurt International e- Book Award winning novel, The Glass Palace . Ghosh has brought in the lives of a few individuals linked in families and their experiences under one umbrella. Moreover, he makes those individuals search for a space that moves them away from the confinement of nation. This historical novel has portrayed the struggles faced by the people during the fall of the Konbaung Dynasty in Mandalay. Through these imaginary characters, Ghosh has displaced the notion of nation and has paved prominence to the family ties that revolve around their own inner conflicts which have a different imaginary concreteness from that of other countries like Europe and America. Many place names were either given new spellings to correct British mistransliterations or replaced by their pre-colonial era names. For example Pagan was replaced by Bagan, Rangoon by Yangon, and Maymyo by Pyin 00 Lwin. However, these new names are not widely used outside (or, for some, inside) the country, and most recent literature has retained the old names and spellings. Hence, to avoid confusion, the old names and spellings will also be retained in this text (including the terms "Burma," "Burman," and "Burmese"). It should be noted that specialists on Burma make an important distinction between "Burman" and "Burmese. II The term Burmese refers to all the people who are citizens of the Union of Burma (Myanmar). -
The Gender Gap and Women's Political Power in Myanmar/Burma
May 2013 The Gender Gap and Women’s Political Power in Myanmar/Burma Advances in international law have changed the face of democracy and promoted the rights of women worldwide. Unfortunately, these advances have not yet helped or improved the lives of women in Burma. Women’s rights have expanded to include rights to gender parity in all areas of governance: ceasefire discussions, peace treaty negotiations, constitution drafting committees, political parties, and equal representation in the executive, legislative and judicial branches. In Burma, over sixty years of military rule has reinforced and perpetuated discrimination against women by preventing them from achieving positions of political power. Because women are not admitted to the Defense Services (Tatmadaw), women have been ineligible for the employment, education, business, joint venture and travel opportunities created by military status. Moreover, the 2008 Constitution requires that the Defense Services appoint 25% of parliamentarians and guarantees that the Defense Forces will remain the integral and dominant political force of Burma. Therefore, the Constitution is the main obstacle preventing true equality and political power for women in Burma going forward. The timeline below illustrates the absence of women in formal power positions in Burma. Beginning in the 1980s, global advances in women’s rights helped secure increased political participation for women in many countries; unfortunately, this progress has not been felt in Burma. It is crucial for more women to be represented in the formal governing structures so that the voices of all Burmese women can be heard. Women activists staged the first strike against sex discrimination, protesting British 1927 regulations that prevented women from holding legislative positions.
