Harry Gradon is on holiday. I know he’s collected forecasts and the entry list is much the same as last year but he hasn’t sent the chart in, which all goes to show that there’s no show without Punch.

The good news is that The Artisan Meat Company is once again sponsoring the league and at the end of the season there will be the usual voucher prizes for the winners to buy meat at their very fine shop at Cherry Trees in Lees Lane. Sorry, it’s not really a suitable shop for veggies or vegans even though they sell some vegetables, cheeses, fruit pies and ice cream.

The emphasise is on 30 day Himalayan Chamber Matured Beef, you can see their Highland cows eating grass in the adjoining fields, the porkers rooting around in their outside pen and chickens and cockerels running free.

Some things you may not know about new President, Chris George

Born in Rochdale in 1956 – a proud Lancastrian.

I moved to Bramhall aged 8 and started school the same day as Murray Maccallum (Captain Bob’s Dad!!) who had moved down from Glasgow. We became lifelong friends and I was best man at Murray and Rosie’s wedding many years later!!

I started rugby at Bramhall Grammar School as a hooker and then openside flanker but played for Davenport RUFC 2nd team at the age of 15 and the 1st team at 17 in the centre. I played for 3 or 4 years at centre and full back for Davenport before moving to Wilmslow with another lifelong friend, Richard Beaton, at a time when they were 2nd to Sale in the Northern Merit Table.

I had some fantastic times, playing for Wilmslow playing against Gosforth (when they had 12 internationals!), Sale and several teams in South Wales.

A torn cruciate ligament playing against Otley put an end to rugby playing days at the age of 24, Notably the person who picked me up from Wythenshawe hospital all those years ago was Past President Nigel Day aka “Sniffer”. The three operations and enforced rest meant that I could concentrate on my studying subsequently qualifying as a Chartered Accountant.

Not being able to play rugby I found myself taking an interest in Powerboat Racing, and as a member of Windermere Motor Boat Racing Club I became British and European Mod VP Powerboat Champion in 1990 and 1991.

Other than a Vets tour to Prague and a few Vets games at the age of 45, rugby was limited to coaching mini and junior rugby from U7’s through to U18’s. I was fortunate to have some great players in my team, many of whom have gone on to play for Wilmslow teams (objective achieved!!) and some well beyond. The guys still come down to the club when they return home. Some notable names who played for my team – Ollie Wilkinson, Ollie Longmore, Mark Toole, Jamie Thomas, Nick Marsh, Hamish Watson, Max Crawford, Jordan Kennedy, Matthew Barltrop, Sam George, Alan Irwin, Harry Valentine, Arthur Goodfellow, Frazer Atkinson, Rory Stewart, George Hill, Rob Thompson and Robbie Boyle. We had several memorable tours to Ireland x3, France, Wales and culminating in a tour to South Africa at U16, making many friends along the way.

My youngest son, Zak played for the club at U6,U7 and captaining the U8’s before turning to the wrong shaped ball game last year!! He still loves watching rugby at Wilmslow and comes down to the club most weeks.

I am very proud to be asked to be President of our fantastic club with a history and facilities that are the envy of most clubs. We play rugby here from the Mini’s through to the first team with a passion to win, which is not borne out of being paid to play but more about working hard for each other, winning or losing together and then having the craic together.

I will make every effort to continue the traditions of the club during my period of office with a particular focus on “One Club” from the Under 6’s through to the Vets, no matter which team you play for, coach or support. This will hopefully embrace the “family” aspect of the club, encouraging families to play, watch and socialise down at the club. Wolves Appearances and Point

They weren’t gone long, were they! Relegated in their annus horribilis in April 2016, a year when they were flooded out of their Warwick Road home, having to play their home fixtures at Creighton Rugby Club on the southern fringes of Carlisle, They just bounced straight back up again as convincing winners of NLC1 last season with 21 wins from 24 outings, well clear of De La Salle, and Oldham. May be they had been a bit unfortunate to have been relegated in the first place but their reaction couldn’t have been better. We welcome them back to the Memorial Ground where we know they will give the Wolves a good test.

Records show that since 2011 honours have been shared with each side winning five matches. Wilmslow have scored 223 points in these matches against Carlisle’s 174.

Pictures from Who will forget the match at the end of March in 2014 Carlisle v Wilmslow at Warwick Road. Both sides were battling against 19th. March 2016 relegation. Carlisle had won five of their previous six outings and Wilmslow desperately needed a win to just about secure their right of passage into the following season’s N1W.

In the face of virtually non stop attack from the home side, Wilmslow defended heroically. It was as if the two smallest men in their team Bob MacCallum and Ollie McCall had been cast in the roles of Horatio and Herminius on the bridge with Alex Taylor as brave Lartius completing the triumvirate, Just as Lars Porsena’s Etruscan army was repulsed that day,so Wilmslow owed a debt of gratitude to these three for their heroic play. Wilmslow had just two chances to score and they took both of them with Ben Day in the first half and Lawrence James in the second. MacCallum converted them both. What happens

Carlisle must have been wondering how they managed next? to lose by just the single point. Glenn Weightman kicked two penalties and Matthew Minett scored a second half try. But they couldn’t pull clear and their play seemed to lose its venom.

And so to the final play, Carlisle swung it wide and MacCallum, who else, was across to make the vital tackle, the forwards piled in, the ball was turned over and a rough Cheshire voice was heard to bawl out; ’Get the bloody thing off the park!’ AUTUMN INTERNATIONALS
