It’s a good hike down the motorway for them so I do hope they enjoy their 28 ROCHDALE LYMM Ashton on Mersey visit, at least up to a point. November 4 Warrington Stockport NORTH MANCHESTER 11 NORTHWICH VALE OF LUNE Altrincham Kersal 18 Rochdale Firstly may I say how honoured I am to be elected as the new President of the club, following in the 25 Burnage PRESTON GH 3 BURNAGE footsteps of some very illustrious past Presidents. I would like to extend the Club’s thanks to Nigel Day, December 2 BLACKBURN Rossendale Hope Valley the immediate past president for a sterling term done in his own inimitable sartorial style of Jonty 9 Manchester Macclesfield 3 LITTLEBOROUGH 16 ALTRINCHAM KERSAL Trafford MV Fallows pink shorts on every occasion, including on the coldest days of mid winter. I don’t think I’ll be 23 following his dress code and nor shall I be nipping off at half time for a forty minute run on the thirds as 30 a substitute. It’s also going to take me a bit of time to get used to penning these notes every fortnight January 6 Waterloo Lymm GLOSSOP 13 Douglas (IOM) STOCKPORT MANCHESTER but I’ll be giving it a go. 20 ST. BENEDICTS Wirral Dukinfield 27 Stockport VALE OF LUNE STOCKPORT Congratulations to Carlisle who won last season’s North Lancs and Cumbrian league in something of a February 3 VALE OF LUNE Rochdale Heaton Moor 10 canter. They probably shouldn’t have been relegated the season before. The last time we played 17 Rochdale Preston GH 3 ASHTON ON MERSEY Carlisle at home was in the 2015 -16 season where we ran out close winners, 16-13. The away match 24 later in the season saw the Wolves winning 12-43 and playing some of the best running rugby of that March 3 WARRINGTON Rossendale North Manchester 10 Northwich MACCLESFIELD ALTRINCHAM KERSAL season. In fact we have always enjoyed competitive games from what are usually two evenly matched 17 sides and the records show nothing between us in the last six seasons. 24 BURNAGE Burnage 31 The league this season contains most of our neighbours with both Stockport and Manchester on the April 7 Blackburn Lymm HOPE VALLEY 14 MANCHESTER STOCKPORT Littleborough fixture list for the first time in a number of years. I hope the club’s archivist, Barry Fisher, will dust 21 Carlisle Wirral BROUGHTON PARK 28 down the Koenen-Middleton Trophy, if he can find it. It has been played for between Wilmslow and Stockport, ever since these two stalwarts of their respective club’s passed away. It’s also been thirty years or so since we played Waterloo and I don’t think we’ve ever played Douglas (IOM). I wasn’t 17 Blackburn 18 season during 24 Kirkby Lonsdale 25 which each team there but by all accounts it was a disappointing performance, nevertheless trying to be positive about plays each other it, I was pleased to see that several colts were given a chance to show what they could do, together October 1 March 4 once, the 8 Fylde 11 with other newcomers. In fact, the first Wilmslow try of the season was a very smart effort from 15 BOLTON 18 organising seeding 22 25 committee will seventeen year old George Witham. I know he’s collected forecasts and the entry list is much the same as last year but he hasn’t sent the chart in, which all goes to show that there’s no show without Punch. The good news is that The Artisan Meat Company is once again sponsoring the league and at the end of the season there will be the usual voucher prizes for the winners to buy meat at their very fine shop at Cherry Trees in Lees Lane. Sorry, it’s not really a suitable shop for veggies or vegans even though they sell some vegetables, cheeses, fruit pies and ice cream. The emphasise is on 30 day Himalayan Chamber Matured Beef, you can see their Highland cows eating grass in the adjoining fields, the porkers rooting around in their outside pen and chickens and cockerels running free. Without them we just would not be here. Some things you may not know about new President, Chris George Born in Rochdale in 1956 – a proud Lancastrian. I moved to Bramhall aged 8 and started school the same day as Murray Maccallum (Captain Bob’s Dad!!) who had moved down from Glasgow. We became lifelong friends and I was best man at Murray and Rosie’s wedding many years later!! I started rugby at Bramhall Grammar School as a hooker and then openside flanker but played for Davenport RUFC 2nd team at the age of 15 and the 1st team at 17 in the centre. I played for 3 or 4 years at centre and full back for Davenport before moving to Wilmslow with another lifelong friend, Richard Beaton, at a time when they were 2nd to Sale in the Northern Merit Table. I had some fantastic times, playing for Wilmslow playing against Gosforth (when they had 12 internationals!), Sale and several teams in South Wales. A torn cruciate ligament playing against Otley put an end to rugby playing days at the age of 24, Notably the person who picked me up from Wythenshawe hospital all those years ago was Past President Nigel Day aka “Sniffer”.
